Strong candidate: Louisville coach could be on Florida's short list - USATODAY.com

C.J. Brown Louisville Courier

LOUISVILLE — University of Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said Saturday night that he would not be surprised if his new football coach, Charlie Strong, is on the short list of candidates to replace Urban Meyer at Florida.
However, Jurich said Louisville would do "everything in our power" to keep Strong if Florida comes calling....

Strong, who was named the Cardinals coach on Dec. 9, has served as Florida's defensive coordinator for the past seven seasons, including the past two as associate head coach. He was scheduled to coach in the Sugar Bowl and return to Louisville Jan. 2 to begin his full time duties with the Cards.

Strong could not be reached for comment Saturday night.

Strong has not signed a final contract with Louisville, only an agreement specifying the terms of his deal. The terms of the contract included a $1 million buyout if Strong left the school before Jan. 1, 2011, but Jurich said he would not "hold a coach who's been here two weeks to a buyout."
"Right now there are a lot of emotions for Charlie and his family. They've lived there, and that's their home," Jurich said. "He's done four different stints there, that's the thing I'm worried about. I want to keep him, but I understand the pressure he's probably going to be under too."
Jurich said he spoke with Strong Saturday after learning of Meyer's announcement. Strong has not been offered the job, Jurich said, but he added that Strong could be among Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley's top candidates.

I don't see Strong there.... my sis-in-law from Gainesville and and alumn and her dad a "big fish" surgeon with strong ties told me they couldn't see Charlie as a Head Coach at ND or Florida.... they've known him for years and that's the $$ population in Gainesville general consensus.... I could be way off the mark. If so... I wonder if we see a bailing of offense recruits.

What is Louisville gonna do? Offer them free pizza from Papa Johns? Isnt Louisville stadium called papa johns stadium or something?

Hope Strong realizes that UF is NOT the place for an OJT Head Coach (see Zook at UF, Dubose at Bama, Davie and Weis at ND, et al) and follows the Meyer Career Track. Strong will have his hands full at Louisville without committing suicide in Gainsville.

I agree. Well put. Its going to be a VERY difficult job at Louisville. Sad thing is, is that Louisville looked like the up and coming program just 4 or 5 years ago when they were highly ranked and beating top 25 teams left and right. Now Louisville is in a downward spiral.

Louisville had a run under Petrino who went 42-9 (.820 Winning %) in '03 - '06 before him John L. Smith was 62-41 (.667 Winning %) and after Petrino, Kragthorpe was 15-21 (.417 Winning %). Before John L. you have to go back to Lee Corso in '69 - '72 to find a coach over 50%. Corso won 70% of his games at Louisville. Historically it's a .500 program.

In their history they finished in the AP Final Poll 7 times. Three were in Petrinos 4 year run.
