That felt good. Signs that we're moving in the right direction:

1) We came back from a tough loss and blew out a team that's had our number recently.
2) We've learned to defend the option this year.
3) We're learning to curbstomp the teams we're supposed to beat.

This season hasn't gone our way. That's on us. But, as opposed to previous regimes, this ND squad seems to be progressing in areas that previously were severely deficient.

You might see it differently, but hey, I'm happy with the W today, and happy with the response after a letdown against USC. Excuse me while I grab a brewski and cue up some Crazy Train.

Definitely great to see the Irish play like that today. Really great game by the older guys.

Good post. I agree completely

I was glad to see that Kelly never took his foot off the gas. It always pissed me off when ND was up by 2 or 3 TDs, and not do a thing to increase the lead.

A great win for Irish and the coaching staff, but they've got to eliminate those lateral passes.

Heard that. I understand what the play is designed to do...but at this point for us (execution wise) the risk is not nearly worth any reward that play could garner.

They need to be completely taken out of the offense this season! Other than that, what a great first game experience!

I'll tell you one thing I like. We seemed to have turned a corner in beating teams we should beat.

I know I know, its a very small step. But for how long have we played down to teams? We are physically dominating teams we should dominate now. That wasnt the case even earlier this year. Hopefully it is a trend that will continue. We will find out more in the coming weeks.

Bottom line is, Notre Dame should never lose to Navy. We are bigger, faster, stronger, deeper at every position. Kudos to them for their effort. But we should never lose. The last few years, that obviously hasnt been the case. Hopefully that corner has been turned.

Next step will be beating teams with similar levels of talent, and that will be done by wanting it more and executing better.

I think it's something you can check off the progress list. Next is showing up in big games against big time opponents.

Sure, let's take Floyd's TD off the books.

They have to execute the play, not expunge it. Rees and Floyd got it done.

I disagree. There is more than one way to score. The risk is not worth the reward to run that play, especially in your own end. I don't see why the ball ever needs to be thrown backwards. If you want to exploit a mismatch on the perimeter of the field, that is fine. Just make sure your QB and WR know where they are on the field and they position themselves accordingly.

It's not supposed to be thrown backwards. That's why they call it a Swing Pass, not a Swing Pitch. The problem was one of two things:

1. Rees is not taking a deep enough drop on the play. I doubt this, as every play requires a certain number of step drop: 3 step, 5 step, 7 step. It's possible that Rees didn't take the right drop, but that's such a basic thing, it's not exactly likely.

2. The back did not run the route properly. Mayock was talking about how Kelly had said that the play in the USC game was because the back didn't run the route properly, leaving him deeper than the drop the QB took. I'm inclined to believe that this is probably the reason for today's turnover, as well.

The play is not flawed. The execution was, in both games, two different receivers. And that's another reason why the developing #1 QB (whatever his name is) needs PT with the First Team. And the #2 QB gets the rest of the PT.
