I know it has been discussed many a time whether ND should stay with a grass field or go with turf one. I prefer grass. The sidelines where the teams stand were mud for the first 10 feet and a taped down tarp for the rest to the wall during the Blue and Gold game.

My suggestion is to field turf this area which would make it a less dangerous for players running out of bounds in this area and also improve the look of the field. With all the players on the sidelines in wet weather it is impossible to keep grass healthy in this area.

Any reason this couldn't be done.

make the switch. 100% field turf. the look will not change that dramatically and performance will increase. seeing golsen slip and fall yesterday rolling out of the pocket and trying to change direction was the nail in the coffin for me.

I've been 100% behind FieldTurf.

But to be fair, we can't expect the field to be Fall "ready" with so little sunlight by April. And with the rain it was bound to be a crap hole.

With that said, why "protect" the players on the little patch just out of bounds and not on the whole field?

By "protect" I think he was meaning the mud to tarp to wall transition. You run off the field at the end of the play run through the muck and onto a tarp. That leaves you wide open for sliding into a bench, wall, other people, or all the other crap on the sidelines.

P.S. Real football is played on grass outside! Premadonnas play on turf and inside.

I agree with the middle of your post. We must remember that South Bend had a LONNNNGGGGGGG winter, and it is hard to get a field ready by then. What mud we saw yesterday was caused by the media and such that stand on the sidelines and trample the grass down. After a few weeks of that, and then snow and terrible weather it is hard for the field to look great. I am sure there will be some sodding done over the summer once it gets nicer out.

^very true, ive noticed it much more since ND games have been shown in HD and attending games closer up, watching JC repair divots like it was a golf course made me think that it was time to switch

I wouldn't have a problem with a switch. I guess replacing the grass every month would be optimal hahah but let's be honest the game has evolved past three yards and a cloud of dust.

The end zone fades are dangerous as the blacktop is too close. If I recall correctly, one of out receivers broke his clavicle on that blacktop. And in the BG game, I think it was TJ who pulled up just short of the blacktop after a fade and was limping after the play.
Field turf the whole thing.
It will also make the stadium more useful as it can then be used for more activities without damaging the turf.
I was at the game with MSU where Tim Brown scored on two punt returns. He also had a third one, but slipped on the grass making a cut and went down at about the 25 yard line, at just about where Golson took the fall.

Field Turf all the way, Grass is far to expensive AND generally speaking a waste of time!

I think we need turf...but I also wish ND would consider making the field look a little more festive. I'd love to see a huge leprechaun mid field...or at the very least IRISH painted in the end zones. We're supposed to be waking the echoes and shaking down thunder, but our stadium is one of the plainest in the nation. I wish that would change.

Turf is the way to go. Speed up the game and correct stupid slips that hurt us so much against Michigan last year. Grass sucks!

And now that the team has gotten faster, turf would be good. For the last decade the grass has been considerably longer than other fields on purpose, but that trick is no longer needed.

Field turf! We run a spread, let the athletes use their speed on a speed-surface.
