My Favorite drummer is Joe Morello.

The Drummer I think is the best in the modern times is Jo Jones. (Count Basie from 1933-1948)

Jo Jones - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

from :43 to the end is some incredible footage. at 1:54, he breaks out his sticks, and starts to jazz it up with his hihat, its so effortless....amazing

Joe starts off by playing the melody to the song on his drums, that cues the band in for the song(i think most ppl miss the fact that this is happening). he has a drum break in the song, at 5:01 he plays the melody again at the end of the solo/break to cue the band in again.

morello was a kid prodigy on the violin at age 9. also visually impaired.

Bonham is one of the best. Phil Collins is amazing live on the drums as well.

I don't like him as a person, but Lars Ulrich is amazing.

Every time I hear this speech I think of you, TMQ. Because you spell differently (some would say more correctly) *snicker snicker*

Dave Grohl is one of the best musicians ever.

Following Cobain's death in April 1994, Grohl retreated, unsure of where to go and what to do with himself. In October 1994, Grohl scheduled studio time, again at Robert Lang's Studio, and quickly recorded a fifteen-track demo. With the exception of a single guitar part on "X-Static" played by Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs, Grohl performed all of the instruments himself. Rather than re-record the album, Grohl's demo was given a professional mix by Rob Schnapf and Tom Rothrock and was released in July 1995 as Foo Fighters' debut album.

Completely forgot about Bun E. Carlos! Awesome! Always wondered how he played with the cigarette constantly hanging from his lips.

Obviously I was joking. There's only one great drummer for me, and the rest are below him. MightyQuinn, forgive for sounding stupid, why would one be banned if he mentioned Neil Peart? Too obvious? (probably) School those of us who aren't as musically inclined as the rest of you guys. Neil mesmorized me when I saw them live many years ago. Lots of great drummers out there, but he's tops for me...

No Roger Taylor? Hmm, you hear him at every dang pro event in the country. Over and over again. He may not be the greatest but he is up there. A very talented drummer. Not just for the catchy We Will Rock You beat. As simple as that is, he really can pound the skins. Watch some video of them.

the greatest...

YouTube - Keith Moon

couldnt embed...sorry...

Wow. I think that vid gave me a hardon. Keith was always my fav.

On a related note, I got to hang with Bonham's widow at a Tiki bar in St Pete, I'm guessing in the late 80's. Funny story. I'm sitting here drinking, and she is a few feet away doing the same, though I don't know who she is yet. She probably looked awesome back in the day, but time had taken it's toll. Anyway, I eavesdrop and here her telling the chick bartender about her husband, who was a drummer in a rock band. That peaks my interest. Finally, she says he played for a band called Led Zeppelin. I nearly spit my drink out. What happened next actually made me spit it out though. The bartender said she had never heard of them. "Were they ever in America?" she asked, because most of the guest were British tourists. Mrs Bonham looks at me and ask if I had heard of them. "Uh, yeah, I'm not a total dumbass"

Anyway, we talked for a while. She was uber cool. Her daughter came up looking smokin hot, in a micro bikini looking like a model and very European, only for her mom to tell me she was 15. I swear, she looked a lot older. Then the worst part happened. Her son Jason came in to surprise her. He had just talked to her on the phone saying he wasn't coming since he was touring. He had a metal band at the time. She was very sad he wasn't coming. Then he walks into the beach bar, acting like a totlal jackass. He wanted to buy drinks for everyone, but the bar had just closed. He goes the whole route "Do you know who I am?" (I think to myself, yes, you're John Bonham's ungratefull prick of a son) and then goes "I make enough money in a day to buy this whole bar". Which, if he knew this bartender, was a waste of time since she didn't even know who Led Zep was. Anyway, mom cooled his jets, and they left together, leaving me only with this story.

I'd have to say, in no particular order:

Clive Burr (caught one of his drumsticks at a concert in '81 I believe)
Buddy Rich
John Bonham
Keith Moon
Neil Peart (sorry, but he's the master of triplets and 16th note bass drum beats)

I can only assume Neil Peart is frowned upon because everyone says he is soooo good, which he is. he is also a very intelluctual, and complex rock drummer. As opposed to John Bohnam who was a very sound rudimental drummer (listen to 'immigrant song' for a picture perfect shuffle rythym)

Both drummers play alot of odd time signatures in their bands (playing odd time signatures is big thing, you cant fake it, you have to know the material)

Bohnam - Rudimentary (maybe the best rudimentary player in his time)
Peart - Complex (creative and intelluctual)

Neil Peart used to be my favorite drummer, when I was purely playing rock music. But I've got the Joe Morello/Jazz bug now, and Neil Peart just doesnt cut it for me anymore, although I still think he his a great player. But I now know there are better players out there.

Here is an example -
Knowing how great Neil Peart is, here is a video of him playing a jazz tune. To me, Neil looks human in this clip, he looks like a rock drummer, playing a jazz number. Look at his fills in the song, they are rock fills, they need to be jazz fills. Rock drummers pound hard, play loud, while jazz drummers are more dynamic and tend to play at a lower volume.

Neil Peart has got alot better since the late 90's (not that he was bad), he had a string a personal tragedies that saw his wife and daughter killed with 14months of each other. He stopped playing drums for almost 5 years during this time. He started playing again, and took up lessons with a true drum master by the name of Freddie Gruber. Since studying with Freddie, Neil has made an effort to play more traditional grip, rather than matched grip. also, the position of his snare has changed as well, along with other changes that were Freddie Gruber influenced.

Freddie Gruber was a contemporary and friend of Buddy Rich, and actually at one time roomed with Buddy Rich. He is kind of a kooky guy when you hear him speak, but a true drum master.
