not much going well so far. OL protection looks solid though.

I don't disagree with taking a chance on 4th down there, but if you're gonna do that, lets at LEAST have BQ and the offense out there. Not gonna fool anyone with a fake punt run right up the gut with zibikowski blocking a DE!

My only complaint with Weis is his tendancy to gamble too soon. That was WAY too soon to try a play like that. Put us behind the 8 ball right off the bat.

No way you can second guess this. Weis is an aggressive playcaller, it just so happens that LSU had a safe on which doesn't happen very often... especially when one punts from their own 35. Nobody can convince me that our defense was going to stop them if we would have punted anyway...hasn't happened all year against big teams. Can't disagree with the call.. we lost this game regardless of that play.

Agree with your assessment.

When a fake punt or onsides kick works the coach is a genius. When it doesn't work he's stupid. A lot of fans can't find any middle ground.

As for the timing those plays work best when they're least expected - as in early in the game. Sometimes when you roll the dice you roll a natural, and sometimes you throw craps. Same motion.

Well he was a genius in the PSU game, but is doesn't matter. However in the long run I agree with BGIF, you're either the goat or the hero.

No if he made it we would have a 1st down in our own territory, and the team would know our coach was desperate....

If we punt it, anything could happen from there on out...It was a stupid call, HUGE RISK...small reward...and it told the team our coach is desperate

You know, I thought this for a while... But it seems that EVERY time Weis pulls a trick play the other team is all over it...like it's obvious. I wonder why that is?

Not every one. The 42 yd fake punt run, wasn't there a fake FG. Now the Samardzija pass plays and the Grimes pass play during the season. They weren't sold well at all.

You could add the Samardzija end arounds as well as plays that didn't work.

Yes it was shocking that an average speed WR end around didn't work against a Blitzing team with speed

Sorry but I still believe Weis needs to prove he is a "genius"

I'm not going to second guess him. He rolled the dice, it failed. Besides, I figured when it happened that our defense wasn't going to stop them anyway so might as well get the ball back faster.

It was a dumb call that early, but did not make a difference, we still would have gotten killed.

My thoughts exactly! I would have been more in favor of punting on the 1st possession, when the Irish lined up for the missed FG by Gioia (as expected), faked it then OR even just straight out went for with our offense on the field! ND FG attempts and kickoffs are plain awful, but we do have a good punter!

I think that CW has proven his talent because he has taken two mediocre teams to BCS bowls, and turned an average QB into an All-American.

I can't wait to see what he does with top-flight talent.

At first I didn't like it. But after the game progressed, and thought about it, I agree with you notdam4 (although I didn't pick up on the safe LSU had). The bottom line is the D could not stop LSU (remember, LSU connected on a deep pass on the very first play after the fake), and everybody was saying ND had to start off strong. If it had worked how many of ya'll would be saying it was dumb? Weis tried to seize the momentum, which was more imortant for ND to do early than for LSU.
