I caught a clip today on their spring practice review where Mark May and Herbie talked about the upcoming season of ND football. Herbie talked about how the two toughest tests for the Irish would be Michigan State and USC, and that he fully expects the Irish undefeated going out to Southern Cal. Of course the ND hater that May is said the Michigan would be able to beat the Irish and that the Irish struggled last year against a terrible Michigan squad. Herbie thinks our D is strong enough to carry us all the way to Southern Cal, lots of respect already for the Irish.

i watch the 2005 nd football highlight video over and over just to hear herbie talking up nd and the new attitude only to have may chime in with, "i'm like missouri. i'm old school! you're gonna have to show me first"

WHOMP-A-DOMP-A-DOMP

just shows you how close he was to ripping the eyes out of his head from last season. if we had won the fiesta bowl he wouldve had to disappear from the face of the earth to save any shred of dignity. now....he has a shred of dignity.

Mark May is dead to me. I get tired of hearing him spew out stupid stuff. I know you hate us, but that's no reason to forsake reality.

I guess he thinks Missouri is old. Missouri was the 24th state in the USA and became a state on August 10, 1821. So, nearly 200 years is old, but this isn't a common fact. He's just a Pitt dork.

Missouri is the "Show Me State"

And this comes from the state's website.

Why Is Missouri Called the "Show-Me" State?
There are a number of stories and legends behind Missouri's sobriquet "Show-Me" state. The slogan is not official, but is common throughout the state and is used on Missouri license plates.

The most widely known legend attributes the phrase to Missouri's U.S. Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver, who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1897 to 1903. While a member of the U.S. House Committee on Naval Affairs, Vandiver attended an 1899 naval banquet in Philadelphia. In a speech there, he declared, "I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I am from Missouri. You have got to show me." Regardless of whether Vandiver coined the phrase, it is certain that his speech helped to popularize the saying.

Other versions of the "Show-Me" legend place the slogan's origin in the mining town of Leadville, Colorado. There, the phrase was first employed as a term of ridicule and reproach. A miner's strike had been in progress for some time in the mid-1890s, and a number of miners from the lead districts of southwest Missouri had been imported to take the places of the strikers. The Joplin miners were unfamiliar with Colorado mining methods and required frequent instructions. Pit bosses began saying, "That man is from Missouri. You'll have to show him."

However the slogan originated, it has since passed into a different meaning entirely, and is now used to indicate the stalwart, conservative, noncredulous character of Missourians.

While Mark May does have a huge bias against ND, for whatever reasons, you must concede that such opinions are necessary to balance the grumpy little domer he has sitting next to him.

And be weary of the ESPN bandwagons. They jump on fast, but once you're down, they rip you apart.

I think this has a lot to do with the expanded fan base ESPN must cater to. You know, the half-wits and morons. The result is over-simplified coverage that lacks substance and is all about endorsing the hottest team. This is why I tend not to like ESPN's coverage.

Mark May is a bitter bitter man. ND wouldn't allow him to play so, he had to go to SH*TT, I mean PITT.

Victors, you and I are so hit or miss it isn't even funny anymore.

I agree that Michigan, while a home game, will be a tough test. MSU on the road and USC on the road are the other games that make me nervous.

Mark May and Lou Holtz set college football back with every last one of their conversations. Annoys me to no end.

ESPN has their favorites (Bonds, Vick, Kobe, Yankees, Red Sox) but they'll turn fast on the flavor of the month once the 15 minutes are up. Still, I thought when the White Sox and Angels advanced to the ALCS last year that station would shut down. You could almost hear Chris Berman sniffling and wiping away tears when the White Sox swept Boston.

And don't forget....the half wits and morons are also working for ESPN, too.

Well played, Victors.

I'm not entirely convinced that Mark May believes everything he is saying. I'm sure he's compensated to the tune of six figures and is told as long as he is the ying to Holtz's yang he'll continue to get paid. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he dislikes ND and he routinely underestimates our team's talent and Coach Weis' intelligence, but some of the stuff he says is so unbelievably absurd that it's too much of a stretch for me to believe that he is being 100% serious.

Just listen to what Herbstreit has to say. He does his homework as was evidenced when he talked about Carlson and the possibility of freshmen contributing. Does any other ESPN "expert" even know who Carlson is? And I'm not saying this simply because Herbstreit seems to be on the ND bandwagon, which plenty of talking heads will be once we really start getting the momentum going, but because Herbsteit is objective and unbiased and he is one of the few people in Bristol who truly earns his paycheck.

Mark May, just like Lee Corso and to a lesser extent Lou Holtz, is there for entertainment value. Loving or hating ND will get ratings, and that's what it's all about boys and girls. Just laugh at Mark May like I do and wait for him to get egg all over his face which will happen very soon (Seriously. He predicted Purdue and UCLA to be potential losses for the Irish. Apparently he missed the trainwreck that is Purdue football and the fact that UCLA still has no defense despite losing a ton of talent on offense.). Notre Dame football is fun again, so don't ESPN ruin it.

We'll it's obvious that Mark May is the Howard Stern of sports. Ok, maybe not that bad, but still the producers at ESPN realize the "Shock Jock" value of ratings. Then enter stage right comes Holtz. Kinda of the good vs. evil angle in sports reporting. Actually it's not even a sports show anymore. Just a regurgitated Jerry Springer show; less the topless fat women. Obviously it’s working, I mean we’ve already devoted a whole thread to it. ;-)
