Ferentz was contacted? I believe Mooch was. The key is contacting those who would be interested. Wouldn't that mean Weis and Hawkins then? I personally prefer Butch Davis, but he may take a year off with his family and relax to avoid going from one stressful situation to another.

Davis is not coaching anywhere next season.

And the best choices (Tedford, Gruden, Hawkins) will likely turn us down.

So now that we have given up the "bird in the hand" for the "bird in the bush", who do we get? As prestigious as ND is, there are so many reasons why a coach would not want to come here.

Forget about Davis, he's all screwed up, had a panic attack before his last game with the Browns. The man wants to take a year off.

my list is down to 3
Weis
hawkins
petrtino

I'd place Petrino as my number 1 right now. If we want him we have to go after him now, Saban looks like he's leaving for the Brown job, LSU will be courting Petrino hard.

We are not down to three choices

We are not down to three choices

And Weis is probably the best choice for ND anyway.

Weis or Hawkins, both are interested. And I think we would be lucky to have either of them.

But I do think ND will contact Mike Shanahan just to make sure, before hiring Weis or Hawkins. Because if you remember after ND hired Ty, Shanahan said if asked he would have considered leaving Denver for ND.

here should be Notre Dame's top 3 choices
1. Tom Clements
2. Mike Shannahan
3. Mike Ditka
The first 2 are legitamate...the last one I through in there for fun. Forget everyone else. They will not win.

Why in God's name would you hire Clements over Weis? Clements might make a great college offensive coordinator though.

Weis won Super Bowls with QB Tom Brady, RB A.Smith, WR David Patten and Troy Brown, not exactly an all star cast. He made Tom Brady.

Mike Shannahan isn't leaving Denver. I follow the Broncos very closely and I really don't think he's going anywhere from what he has publicly said in the past. I'd like Tedford, but I doubt we can get him. What a sorry situation we're in now?

Shanahan was never a legitimate option...nor was Tedford....the guy is a Californian born and bred and was never leaving the left coast. Most of the names floating around are rumor and speculation, were never under consideration and make us look worse and worse as they publically state they are not interested. The Irish need to get their act together and go after these guys:

1) Barry Alverez ...this is a no brainer if he is REALLY interested which I doubt. He owns the state of Wisconsin.
2) Dan Hawkins...we can afford him and he has NOT signed his contract extension at BSU. He also looks like he really wants the job.
3) Charlie Weis...NFL connections but big questions are timing (can't come in until Feb.) and no recruiting experience.
4) Tom Clements....Loyal Alum but again no recruiting experience.

Was Petrino ever even contacted? Hawkins wasn't. I think we've got something in the works already.

What do we have that is working out right now? Any links.

No links. I just find it odd that both Hawkins and Petrino are suddenly 'not interested.' I guess the AD of Louisville said Petrino was cutting a deal, but I don't buy it. Hawkins would have given his left nutsack for the ND job and he claims he wasn't even contacted. Yet they both withdrew their names within a few hours of one another. Petrino may actually have it good in Louisville, but Hawkins leaving Boise State was a no-brainer. Neither of them saw the $$$ in their contracts skyrocket to ND-sized proportions, which tells me they weren't in a bidding war. Quoting ESPN, Petrino "expected to receive a greatly enhanced contract. He currently is making about $550,000 a year, plus incentives."

Same article: "Sources familiar with the situation say Notre Dame never actually offered Petrino the job."

That's why I believe something is already in the works. ESPN is on a mission to sensationalize this, but we've already got something cooking.

"Sources familiar with the situation say Notre Dame never actually offered Petrino the job, but the talks with Notre Dame were substantive enough that athletic director Tom Jurich was preparing to begin work on finding his third football coach in four years -- but in the end it didn't come to that. Instead, Petrino will take Louisville into the Big East Conference in 2005 and is expected to receive a greatly enhanced contract. He currently is making about $550,000 a year, plus incentives."

OK, this coaching search is turning into a joke. Here is my updated list of coaching candidates.....
1. Mike Shannahan...Until he says No, he should be # 1 on everyone's list. I think he will consider it if it looks as if Denver might not make the playoffs.
2. Tom Clements...Loyal Ulumn, won at ND, good offensive mind. He might need a little help with the recruiting, however, he was recruited by Ara, so he should know what to tell these players.
3. Charlie Weis...Great offensive mind, and ND Alumn. If Saban doesn't go to the Browns, Weis will. Like Clements, no head coacing experience, but maybe it's time to just keep it in the family and go with him or Clements. The boosters wanna gripe so much, they can help their own (Clements and Weiss) by going out and talking these players into going to ND.
4. Tom O'Brien...just like when they hired Ara away from Northwesten, they need to hire O'Brien. He will have this team ready to play on Saturday, and he will have a bigger recruiting network than at BC.

This should be the THE LIST, and THE ONLY LIST of candidates until someone says no, or is hired off this list. Lou's not coming back, Barry Alvarez won't leave Wisconsin. Dan Hawkins looks more like Goober Pyle. Everyone else will say no, or really aren't qualified enough to coach at ND. God, I hope someone at the University is reading this.

Well I saw somewere that Shanhan is gone - not interested in ND

Tom Clements would be ok
Charlie Weis will be gone - we wont match a NFL salary and thats what he will be getting in 2005 or 2006
Tom O'Brien would be a nice one maybe we could then end our losing streak against our other rival (Boston College)

I dont know what to believe - if Hawkins signed his contract or not (extension)

Well we'll see what happens - really ESPN is making it sound like we really r having a hard time - we arent this is the list i saw most

1. Urban Meyere (Alot really didnt want him)
2. Dan Hawkins (Alot really didnt want him either)'
3. Charles Weis
4. Tom Clements
5. Tom O'Brien

so the top 2 who we really didnt care for are gone - really we didnt lose anything

"Former Irish star quarterback Tom Clements, who is now with the Buffalo Bills, will reportedly talk with Irish officials about the coaching vacancy.

The meeting will likely take place either Wednesday or Thursday.

Clements has received endorsements for the job from the likes of Ara Parseghian, Joe Montana and Terry Hanratty.

Clements served four years as an assistant to Lou Holtz at Notre Dame.

He's worked with the Saints, Chiefs, Steelers and Bills in the NFL."

THESE ARE ENDORSEMENTS FROM WINNERS IN THE NOTRE DAME PROGRAM.
Tom Clements should be the # 1 choice right now. Lets get this thing done, so we can work on recruiting.

Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden and Steve Mariucci are so far out of the running it isn't even funny. Anyone who thinks ND has a realistic chance of getting these guys had been sniffing the paint on the golden helmets. For a million a year, Clements and Weis are the best options. I hope that if it is Weis, he brings Romeo Cronell with him.

If only Ara was 15 years younger! Ditka, too! The job should be given to Clements. Only an insider can win here now.
