but you know that going into the military. its supposed to be hard and tough and not fair. its not the coast guard (no offense) its a rough life style and when youre in you grow to love everything about it. if i hadnt gotten married i would have stayed in. i didnt think it was fair to my wife and future kids to never be around. my choice no one elses. if i had stayed in then it would have been my choice to live in certain conditions. not all are like that actually 99 % are not like that but in some cases life sucks and you move on. plain and simple thats it. sometimes life is beautiful and relaxing but sometimes its hard and unfair. just deal with it. and anyone who wants to say oh look how they are being treated get a degree join the military and change something!

This is where I disagree wholly. Joining the military won't change it.

The biggest problem is that we have Politicians and the Public taking them for granted.

I am not saying it should be a country club or that guys in uniform should sit on golden toilet seats...but since WW2 our treatment of soldiers who return home from conflicts has deteriorated.

We can do better. We should do better. We owe it to them.

I guess I've been trolling this thread reading what everyone has to say for the last couple of days. I can't speak to anything in the Army of Marines...I retired after 20 years of service in the USAF. I can tell you that in my experience, they do everything they can within the constraints of a budget to make things better for the troops. The difference from when I joined in 1986 and when I retired in 2006 is nothing short of amazing. The pay gap between the military and civilian sector has continued to shrink. There are always a number of self-help projects going on around each base. New, upgraded and better equipment is always being procured. I once lived in a barracks that was considered unliveable for minimum security inmates, (so they got the nicer dorms!) so I understand that we do misplace our priorities at times. But, really, the military doesn't have it all that bad.

The military isn't for everyone. I wish that we could provide better facilities for them, but the reality is that it's not always possible. I don't know the specifics of this case you guys are talking about, but I'm sure there was a reason it wasn't ready for their return. Making it a story for the news to cover was innapropriate in my opinion, bu tmaybe it helped get some results. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, right?
