That in the player press conferences this week all the guys kept mentioning Hawaii and how excited they are, and there vote was to play there. I believe Charlie has the personnel and I don't want to argue if he does or doesn't, but it bugged me that these guys acted like they weren't going out there for work. I think someone, maybe Harrison even mentioned going out and surfing. Dude this is a F***ing bowl game, FYI ND has been terrible at these for a while now, so I think it's time to store the old surfboard and suntan lotion and tell the media and yourself, your coming to punch someone in the mouth. They were all jovial, like yeah we are going to Hawaii, I've never been, Jimmy was like, I've been 6 times. Just annoyed me, thoughts?

Yeah, I think accepting a bowl game has two sides for sure. As a fan, I'm totally disappointed that ND has accepted a bowl bid with a 6-6 record. Winning only 50% of your games is no way to reward players and show them that hard work is what leads to more wins. This situatin is like taking T-Ball kids out for ice cream EVERY time they have a game. Pass the hat, gather the $$, and take them out.

While encouragement goes a long way, sports has to be about MORE than patting each other on the back for showing up. It has to involve a level of discipline to work harder TOGETHER to overcome adversity. I don't remember one game this year where the team overcame adversity and played together to pull out a win. I did see many collapses late where one side of the team tried to hold up the other.

However, I will say that, as a coach, Charlie has to be loving the opportunity to get more practice time and another game to get his underclassmen some more hits.

Let's look at it this way, It'll be 78-80 degrees in Hawaii, and it'll be 20-30 degrees in South Bend, I would be looking forward to go to Hawaii also..........

We'll see what their attitude is and how focused they are when they're on the field. I would hope they'd be totally devoted to winning this football game, but it's hard to get down on college kids for being excited to go to Hawaii.

I'd be pumped to go to Hawaii, too. It's better than them saying "I'm not really excited to play in our bowl game, it's too cold."

Their kids, who wouldn't be excited about a trip like this. Probably all the ones that haven't been there are putting a dream into action, and there also getting to play a game they love at the same venue. There going to have the time of their lives and an experience they never forget. They won't forget why their there and I think they'll perform. It never hurts to have some fun amongst all win win attitudes circulating around college football. At the end of the day- it's still a game. I'd take it- play the for Irish and take in the sites of Hawaii.

i agree with the OP, there is really no room for surfing or being happy about anything at this point.

this is just more fuel to my fire that this program is not being run correctly. there are just so many things i have seen in the recent past that tell me how bad it is that i really do not think its going to change without a complete and total overhaul.

I can see where you all are coming from, I understand they are kids and this is probably most their first times going to Hawaii, I just wish Charlie would have told them before the interviews, let's get serious. Bringing our hard hats and going to work. I would have been impressed with a new mindset to go with this first game of next season......cause that's what it is in my mind, this could be the start of CW's last harrah......let's make it count.

On one hand, I don't like hearing them talking about something other than the game, but, at the same time, they are kids. They should be excited and not all doom and gloom. I am sure they are pissed about the season, but there should be some joy in playing the game. If Hawaii doesn't make you happy, then something is wrong with you. If, come gametime, they are not into the game, I will be pissed, but right now, I hope they have a great time and come out and kick some Rainbow Warrior ASS!!!!

They are kids. There's no way you're gonna get a bunch of 18-22-year olds not excited about a trip to Hawaii for Hawaii's sake. These are not the New England Patriots, they're not adults or professionals, so its a little optimistic imo to expect them to act that professionally.

However, that's no excuse if they come out flat on x-mas eve. They better be ready to play, especially considering they did little to deserve a free trip to Hawaii this year....

maybe while in the ocean getting pummeled by the surf, harrison smith will learn how to not get senseless penalties away from the play that cost the team games.

The original thread reminds me of that retarded movie about the Red Sox where Jimmy Falllon and his boys are in a bar PISSED about the teams poor play, then they see the players sitting at another table laughing it up without a care in the world...

sucks but true

I don't see a problem with having fun, but I just feel like this team's mentality has been lazy and irreverent all year long, and last year for that matter. This is Notre Dame, they have a proud tradition to uphold. Do you guys think that's asking for too much? I love Charlie's recruiting abilities about as much as anyone but I wish we had some intensity. I think it starts with him and the QB......that's right Goldilocks.....

you have to approach this....

you have to approach this....

from a college kids perspective. these guys are making a trip of a lifetime, and they have one more game to prepare/develop toward their (hopefully) future success.....and they get to do it in hawaii, how cool is that.

now do i think that charlie will have them prepared and ready to go? i'm doubtful, but i'm trying to be optimistic. should the kids be punished becuz of going .500 with a 6-6 record and not be allowed to play in a bowl game? i don't think so. if weis were fired, then i'd say a bowl game would've been a waste, but since he kept his job, then a bowl game is a must.

for the first time in a long time these kids have finally gotten the chance to express themselves in an interview and people want to get pissed about it.....lighten up, they're kids. i've read countless interviews where these boys sounded like robots and were not allowed to express their feelings. the usual "we are focused for one game at a time, one opponent at time, we are not worried about what happened last year", etc.

i'm happy for them and i hope they get their focus on right before game time. don't have them ruin this trip with focusing the entire time they are in hawaii. i don't want to go willy nilly and wear themselves down, but do let them relax and enjoy the moment....and when the times right, c'dub better get their game faces on.

go irish!!

Let me tell you gentleman a little story that will make you feel better about this whole subject of the guys being excited to go to Hawaii.

In the late '50's and early to mid '60's one of the best recievers in the NFL was Green Bay Packers WR Max Meghee. He was a memeber of all of the Championship teams and was a huge part of the offense. He and Paul Hornung were very close friends and even lived together for a time. As most of us know Hornung was a bit of a party animal so when the two of them got together drinking and late nights soon followed. Both of them always preformed on the field, despite thier countless sleepless nights.

In the season of '67 the New Orleans Saints became an expansion francise and every team has to allow certain players to be unprotected from the expansion draft. Hornung was one of these players left unprotected because Lombardi assumed they would not want him because by this time he was older and not as effective. They took him and before he ever played a game he retired from the NFL.

During the '67 season Meghee was a part of the team, however, he was the third string wr by this point because age and injuries had slowed him down. Most of the year he oppserved from the sidelines as Boyde Dowler became an All-Pro WR. That year the Packers won the NFL Championship and were sloted to play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl II in L.A.. What is it we all know about California, there is lots of booze and good looking woman.

Hornung flew out to L.A. to hang out with his friends and former teamates and cheer them on. The night before the game Meghee and Hornung went out on the town and drank and caused trouble all night long. Meghee was entering the hotel in the morning hours and Bart Starr, Packers QB and leader was in the hallway just fetching his Morning coffee. He says,"Max, your up pretty early." Meghee responded,"Well, actually on my way to bed now." Starr shook his head and smiled saying,"You and Paul will always be kids. Get some rest you never know when Lombardi will put you in there."

Later that afternoon Dowler went down on the first play of the game. Soon after so did the #2(don't know who), so with the game still up for grabs in the first quarter with no points for either side Lombardi called on his trusty Meghee. Max forgot to bring his helmet because he was still not thinking straight from the hang-over. He found one and entered the game bad headache and ailling body and lead the team with 142 yards recieving and 2 touchdowns. He was by all accounts, except the people handing out the award, the games MVP.(The award officially went to Bart Starr, who gave it to Meghee in the locker room, saying he was the real MVP)

This story was meant to show you all these guys are competitors and they will show up to play no matter where they are or what they did in the days leading up to the game........

College kids or not, they are competitors. What the story is meant to show is that no matter what they do around the time of the game, when gametime starts they will play thier best. If its enough to win they will do so, and if not they will lose again. I am just not opposed to them having a little fun.

nor am i, but using a pro that got stone drunk before an important game might not have been the best example. i highly doubt these boys will be that stupid. now if they go out and surf for 3 hours just before the game, then that'd be pretty stupid too.

you can have fun without risking your energy or deplete your fitness. just as long as they give themselves enough time for their body and mind to get prepared for the game, then let have fun up to that point.....whatever time frame they need to prepare.

Don't hold anything back. Tell us how you really feel. Wow, a little harsh don't ya think. Proven LOSER, you say that because he has shown the inability to win with a young team?

I think maybe he has proven that he doesn't motivate well. He has definatly proven his mouth is far stronger than any schematic advantage. He has won, and won plenty. Does that mean he will put it together at ND, not nessasarly, however he is not a proven loser.

Sure he is. He has almost as many losses as he does wins and dont get me started on the whole patriots thing. We all know very well that Billick was the brains behind that operation. He's still winning without Chuckie thats for sure. But anyway.

I heard another story about Hornung and Meghee sneaking out after curfew and Lombardi caught them as they came back in and fined them $1000 each. Then the next night the snuck out again and Lombardi caught them as they came back in and fined the $2000 each. Then, the next night before turning in, Lombardi told them both that if they snuck out again, to take him with them because he wanted to see what was worth $3000.

I paraphrased and didn't tell it very good, but I thought it was a funny story with the same people.

Back to the thread - I hope the boys have a great time. Road trips like this are very special when you are on a team and they are something you remember your whole life. With that being said, I hope these kids appreciate they are not just going to play in the surf and look at bikini clad girls in December. They have a tradition to uphold and I hope their play reflects that on field.

Go get 'em boys!!!
