Demetrius Jones' Decision

Demetrius Jones has his list narrowed down to Illinois and Notre Dame, as we all know.

Around Chicago, the rumor mill about Jones is swirling. I can't remember a kid getting this much attention both locally and nationally. Isiah Williams of Chicago Vocational (Zorich, Buttkus, Juwan Howard) has verbally pledged to Ron Zook and Illinois. Close friends, Jones and Williams decided it would be best for them not to attend the same school because they are both QB.

Jones' teammate Chris James verballed to Zook last week. Their teammate Ramone Johnson could be doing the same soon. Weis is only taking 2 scholarship QBs and already has Frazer verballed.

I think Jones will be close to making a decision soon. I think that Illinois could be out of the mix now. Williams choosing Champaign might sway Jones to ND. A lot of this could hinge on Johnson's choice.

Ramone Johnson is looking at U of I and Tennessee very hard. This is possible.

I truly believe that Isiah Williams going to U of I could get Jones in the door at ND. Jones has plenty of offers to sift through, but ND and U of I have been the Big Two. He'll compete against Frazer because he doesn't know him. Jones and Williams are buddies and won't commit to the same school.

I think ND wins and we could get a decision this week. Jones is growing weary of the whole process. Morgan Park has a shot at State and he'd like to make a decision before the season starts.

I don't think so. It would be a great depth at the position but it would be a waste of talent. Sharpley is still in the run, so you will have 3 young QBs trying to get the job, all three may be equally deserving for a starting position. The scholarship could be used for somebody else for the defense.

And I really do not want ND to become one of those 2 QB teams like Tennessee was, that is ridiculous.

I want to land Jones, but I wonder how Frazer will feel about it. Frazer is still getting offers through the door, and now Urban Meyer has started recruiting him. I'm sure Urban will talk alot of trash, saying ND already has Jones why would you want to go there.

Urban has a real chip on his shoulder, I have a feeling he'll be trying to steal alot of our recruits....

I could not have said it better myself.You want weis to bring the talent but not to much.What make everyone think we will have to find another position for d.jones.they are both ranked in the top one hundred and jones plays in a tougher conferance.These guys are not even seniors yet let them compete so we get the very best Qb for the irish.The talent needed an up grade and this is how you do it.Also why would you want a quarterback that is comfortable in the backup role. :rocket:

Yeah I agree with you when you get a shot at landing a top player you should go for it.
BUT where do you draw the line? It is cutting alittle close to being too much like ol' Petey at USC. You are then only telling the recruit half the story (Chow leaving).
You can't honestly say, "Well he knows what he is getting into." When ever you recruit kids and tell them they are going to play you can't overload one position with 5 star recruits, especially not QB. I could understand recruiting 5 Five star O-lineman, because they will be [allowed] to play all at once at some point in their career.
So now if they do get this kid. You will have Quinn, Sharpely, [Frazer], and himself, thats alittle shadey in my book.

And recruiting a kid to play QB but having a hidden agenda to say, if he doesn't work out there I can always change his position. That also is alittle shadey, that would be robbing him of the possibility of playing else where at the position he wants to play.

Further more I think with Quinn staying for 2 more years, Sharpely 4 more years, and Frazer will be Irish for 4 years (starting the 2006). I think we can rest assured that we have the QB position in good enough hands to not take anymore QBs this year. Get another good one next year and we still will be in good hands.
All I'm saying is that the scholarship "could go elsewhere". Why not a DE, or LB not to mention secondary.

And rankings are not worth the time taken to compile them. That just simply means he was the best junior HS football player in the country last year. Which could change. I don't think it is necessary to overload at one position.

Frazer is a junior in high school. Sharpley hits campus in two months. No guarantees that they will be the guy. Weis said he wants two scholarship quarterbacks in this class. I think it is a great idea. Right now, depth after Quinn is none. Simple as that. A good scholarship QB in each class is the policy Weis is going to use. I agree 100%.

is it wrong? kinda. quinn is a good quarterback that has yet to make the transition to great. if one of these recruits comes in and out plays quinn, i'll be the first to thank him for all his dedication, and show him his seat on the bench. this isn't a democracy, where everybody gets their day in the sun as long as they wait in line for their turn. it was exactly that philosophy that was a big part of willingham's problem - playing the guys that had "put in their time" over the younger guys with more talent.

having said that, sharpley, frazer and jones have never taken a college snap. i'll guarantee that one of the three turns out to be a bust and will never live up to his potential. (refer to the rather extensive thread on this site about big name recruits that never panned out) there's also a good chance that one of the three will switch positions at the college level either by his choosing or a coaching decision. that leaves one of them for us to hang our hopes on.

i don't think weis is misleading these guys in trying to recruit talent at quarterback. they may be young, but they know the score. and players of that caliber are generally confident enough to believe that they will earn the starting position and the others will make do with what's left over. it makes for good competition.

i think we should go after jones, let all of them compete for the job, and let the chips fall where they may.

Compitition at the position will make both kids better! If we can get 2 top 100 QB's in this class, we should do it. This way we can recruit other areas next year.

Could not have said it better myself. Get both guys, let them compete and if 1 of them decides to transfer or go somewhere else, so be it. At least we won't regret going after one of the top athletes in the country in Jones.

I doubt it. Frazer saw what Weis did with Tom Brady. I don't care who Weis gets in there at quaterback coach because you know the buck will always stop with Weis. He's in charge and will always call the shots.

The fear I have with Jones is that he is raw, as most Chicago Public League football players are and could end up fizzling at the college level. Morgan Park is the city's superior program, bar none, but CPL kids in football aren't like the ones in basketball. There are a hand full of programs that can compete for a state championship. Coaching and funding are sorely lacking. The players don't develop like they do in the suburbs or Catholic schools.

That said, Frazer is probably more polished. But Jones is clearly a step ahead of most Public Leaguers.

Exactly I agree A good scholarship QB in EACH class. We already have Frazer. Everybody is swinging on Jones' sack but forgetting that Frazer was Weis' first choice at QB.

You know what, I hope ND does get Jones, just so we can have the "depth". Is it necessary, not really. But by all means come on over Jones, Ill be the first to shake his hand.

Now these are the QBs on the charts for ND. Now Wolke might not have been the "#1 QB" in his class but he had an impressive HS career. And is very comfortable throwing the ball. If you look at his stats he could fit into the Weis passing game just fine. In 2006 if we did land Jones there would be at least 6 QBs on the depth chart. Why in the hell does anybody need 6 QBs?

And I seriously doubt that Quinn would lose his job to Sharpely or Frazer. Quinn, it is true, has not stepped over to the level of being great.

You can have the greatest Army in the world (like the US) but if you have idiots leading the Army like Willingham, Diedrick the Army is not going to perform at its max potential.

Quinn is the guy the next two years. Someone really good would have to take his job. I don't see it happening.

Weis' approach with recruiting QBs is a long term project right now. Two this year, one every following.

I would love to see ND get Jones. I think he will be a valuable asset to the program under Weis.

Jones and Morgan Park will play Chicago Mt. Carmel on August 27th at Soldier Field. I'll be going to check the game out.

I have a bad feeling Purdue is going to sneak in there and get him. Hopefully Weis and Co. get back on top of things.
