Say what you will about how well the Irish played last night. I believe that final drive was a defining moment of the season. They could have quit like so many teams in the past 10 years have done. But Brady Quinn et al. wouldn't have it. Since the regular season is over, it is a good time to define the moments that make Irish football so special. My top 5 from this season thus far (ok, top 6 since Charlie Weis' hiring has to be in there somewhere):
1. Post-game ND-USC. First, we had the weeping by USC players. Maybe it was because they were injured from being hit hard all night by the ND defense. However, I'd like to think they were weeping because they knew they had won a battle with a great team. They knew they were lucky to win that game. Charlie Weis then walks over with his son to the visiting team's locker room and congratulates them on their victory. He first met Reggie Bush and Matt Leinert outside of the lockerroom. I can't even imagine the amount of respect the entire USC team probably has for Charlie Weis now. And when the media made a statement in the polls the following Monday....I've just never seen or remember a team losing and not dropping in the polls before.
2. Montana's story that led into the Washington game -- a completion for a first down from inside the ND 5 on the first play of the game. I'm sure Montana was smiling and had something to do with the leap by Fassano. This type of thing is what defines ND as a program. I also just get chills every time I think about it.
3. Post-game ND-Navy-joining the midshipmen after a game for Navy's alma mater. That is the ultimate in sportsmanship and respect for a team and it's men.
4. The Final Drive-It's the moment that was worth $14.5 million. It's the moment that put us back into the elite of college football and the BCS. It's the moment that makes me a believer that greatness is to come.
5. The whole ND-BYU game. I went to that game and sat with all the Mormons because I have a lot of classmates who are from there....one who runs cougarfan.com. The opportunity to watch a football game in that stadium regardless of opponent is priceless. Oh, and watching Brady set some records and play toss and catch was fun, too.
6. Charlie Weis being hired. I was one of those that though Ty deserved another year to see where he could go with "his" players. I felt they jumped the gun on firing him to quickly. I also was unsure about the quality of Charlie Weis as a head football coach. I thought, sure, he has won as an offensive coordinator but can he handle the duties of being a head coach at ND. He has made me a believer. He may not be perfect but is there anyone I want as a coach for ND after seeing the results he can produce in just a year? NO. Charlie Weis will be Irish for at least 9 great years to come. I'm looking forward to it.
