I don't think it's that rare actually. It happens all the time.

HOWEVER, it's more rare that a 3-year feature back does not get drafted (from a Major University).

What we have seen at ND is a bunch of guys who looked good or ok in the ND system, but frankly were not NFL caliber.

SINCE "The Bus":
Reggie Brooks (drafted second round)
Lee Becton (drafted or no?)
Randy Kinder did not get drafted
Autry Denson was picked in the 7th. (ND's all time rusher!!!)
Tony Fisher did not get drafted. (still playing though from Freee Agency)
Ryan Grant did not get drafted.
Julius Jones drafted in second round
Darius Walker did not get drafted.

Frankly speaking we have not had a truly high caliber Running Back in well over a decade.

Throw Ray Zellars in there too. I think he was thought of as a FB/HB combo, but the Saints spent a draft choice on him & he never really did anything.

Also, don't forget about the talented college RBs we had in the 70s & 80s who failed to produce in the NFL for whatever reason:

Vegas Ferguson - drafted by Patriots & only played a few years
Allen Pinkett - decent career w/ the Oilers but never a feature back
Wayne Bullock - really a FB, but ran a lot like Bettis, had a career ending injury in pro camp
Al Hunter - drafted in the NFL's first supplemental draft by the Seahawks in the 4th round
Eric Penick

Reggie Brooks was da man! I thought he would do more than what he did. Probably helped by a pretty good line, and decent speed.

He had a helluva rookie season w/ your Redskins w/ over 1000 yds rushing, but then followed that up w/ an injury plagued 2nd season & then I never heard what happened to him but he disappeared.

Whats “awful” about letting players know how to protect themselves?

That's only tone deaf if you run a Reddit twitter account and have never played contact sports.

Huh? What’s bad about this? Timing wasn’t great but that wasn’t the point.

The announcer during the Colorado game last night said something along the lines but “he escapes the handcuffs” when a player broke a tackle. No outrage about that one.
