Life couldn't be sweeter today....(well, ok, McCoy could have pleasantly surprised us)....a calm, efficient and awesome LOID day and this....

--------------
Miami fans are in full meltdown mode over their recruiting class, and it's lack of Wr's, Coker's coaching, and Shalala's comments. President Shalala doesn't seem to understand that Miami fans want nothing to do with raising the academic standards for their football players. That program wasn't built on guys with 3.4's in molecular biology. Those are things that matter on the cocktail circuit of academia. Miami fans want kids who run really really fast and hit really hard. If they can read and write all the better but those are not viewed as essential requirements for those members of the football program.

Good luck taming that herd Donna.

------

UM president Donna Shalala laughed off valid grumblings by coaches that UM's academic standards have created significant obstacles in recruiting: ``Privately, coaches and recruiters say such things openly all over the country. . . . We are not going to admit every student-athlete.''

Shalala, incidentally, doesn't believe UM fans expect too much from the football team. ''In fact, I see my job as insisting we constantly raise expectations.'' She said she had no role in the firing of four assistants and supports head coach Larry Coker: ``I'm personally very fond of him, and his overall record for us is excellent.''

I think the assistant coach firings are hurting them. For one, it is costing them recruits. Also, it reeks of crap rolling downhill and blame being laid.

I live in Coconut Grove, a couple miles up US-1 from "the U" campus in Coral Gables.

Yeah, people here are furious. At his point, it's hard to see Coker lasting through this year. It's crazy, he won a championship not long ago (tho' with his predecessor's players), and I don't know if he survives unless he goes 10-1... Positively Buckeye-ish...

This program has really been up and down since Dennis Erickson. Just goes to show you that you reap what you sow in life.

Butch Davis did a great job building them back up with integrity, but it has fallen off yet again.

They'll be back up on a peak before too long. Right now, they're in a valley.

Tommy Tuberville may have said it best yesterday. He said that recruiting rankings don't amount to "a hill of beans." When he was at Miami, their classes were never highly ranked and they won three NC.

But USC still scares the hell out of me.

domer95, do you have a link for that story? Somebody check the thermostat in hell when Miami fans start grumbling over the school's academic rigors.

Yeah, they've only won one outright BCS NC. Nevertheless, it looks like they are still the daddy in recruiting. So much for rebuilding. These freshmen will get a whole year of seasoning before they play us later this year. If we do beat them, it won't come easy. Speed kills and we're still not in that elite level when it comes to overall team speed. We're getting there, but we aren't there yet. USC is in that elite level. OSU and Texas are in that elite level. In another year or two ND will be at that elite level. Charlie did improve the speed of this team with the current recruiting class. For example, George West is a playmaker/return specialist. Munir runs a 10.4 in the 100. That's 5 tenths of a second away from a sub-10 timing in the 100. That's moving gentlemen. Walls and McNeil are natural cover corners. I guess it goes both ways, because our freshmen will have a whole year of seasoning before we play USC. There won't be time to iron out wrinkles because we have PSU, GT, and UM the first three games. Not to mention MSU who always seems to beat us. We'll need at least three corners to step up, so that we can stop playing base defense against 4 and 5 receiver sets.

Regardless of where they are "ranked" in recruiting, they have tons of talent. Carroll's flakey enthusiasm rubs off on people. They are going to be good for year's to come because they can take any piece of ghetto trash with speed and not have to worry about their grades. Anyone see Stafon Johnson announce last week? Most of these guys have the sense to put on a shirt and tie, look presentable. This dope, who spoke what I think resembled English, had on a jersey, a gold chain as big as my head and put on a white USC WINTER cap when he announced.

If I have to hear USC practices described as "fun" one more time I'm going to barf. I can't remember the last time I had "fun" in practice. Only the games were fun because you get to hit other people that aren't your teammates. Still, whatever they do it works. And in that conference, they'll be good for years.

Matt Hayes of Sporting News offers this on the sad state of the U of Miami.

"Blue-chip QB Pat Devlin's switch from Miami to Penn State highlights a disturbing trend for the Canes: Miami is having problems recruiting elite quarterbacks. Last year, Elite 11 QB Derek Shaw committed to Miami early before signing with Arizona State. The bigger issue: How can Miami not be able to recruit a position it owned for two decades? There are two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster--starter Kyle Wright, who will be a junior next season, and backup Kirby Freeman, who will be a sophomore--so there's not a logjam of depth and talent scaring away recruits. . . ."

How bad has it gotten for the U? Remember JoePa recruited Jim Kelly to play LB. I rather be thin at D Tackle than at QB.

Talent high, character low. They've hit a valley for now. I wonder what the chances of Butch Davis coming back might be.

Sorry Rocket, didn't see your msg until now. Normally, I'd post the link, but the story was short enough, that I thought it was just as easy to copy. I believe that I found it on someone's post on EDSBS. Specifically where they're discussing the "Fulmer Cup".
