CW & Big Games

This isn't a "fire CW thread", I just need to vent about his ability to win big games.

I continue to hear for the last 5 years that this is "Charlie's big game" and a "statement game", etc, etc. You guys have seen them, and read about how if CW loses then this, and if we win then that....

My question is, we've had a "bunch" of these big games, and when are we going to win one of them? Weis is 0-5 vs USC, and extremely poor against teams in the top 10, and ranked teams. Our talent level is there, isn't it? Are we a year away still?

Other than USC his big games have been 2 BCS bowls where we were clearly outmatched.

This doesnt mean anything, its just fuel to the flames. The truth is we will never have the talent that SC does. We will never catch anyone on a down week. We will always be put in Bowl games againts elite opponents, whether we desreve to or not.

This year has been stacked against us. Two horribly officiated games aganist MSU and UM. and injuries yet we are still winning games.

Ya I predicted 10-2 with losses to MSU and USC when the season started and 12-0 next year. I think were a year away. We're a top 15 team this year in my opinion and will be a top 5 one next year.

If you are using Charlie being on the hot seat, as one definition of a "big game", then he has won three of them (Michigan State, Purdue, and Washington), in just the last five weeks.

The question is how long do we and ND administration settle with 8-9 win seasons and gator bowls? Charlie said that if he doesn't win a national title after 5 years something is wrong.

I love CW and I'm behind him and the team 100%. But if this trend continues people will start scratching their heads and wondering when the team gets over the hump.

ND HAS to and is SUPPOSED to beat teams like purdue, washington, and pitt. BCS caliber and championship caliber teams have to beat UM and USC.

Until that happens ND will not get national respect and CW will continue to be questioned.

Although I've had my doubts on Cholly (see ridiculous, overreactive rants from the Michigan and Michigan State games), I would give him at least one more year.

If he isn't winning big games with players like Jimmy Clausen, Golden Tate, and Michael Floyd and a defense that returns 10 starters...then let him go.

He needs one more year. I like what I'm seeing from him.

Yes. If they only win 7 games, they will play in a bowl game.

10-2... will it give us a Rose, Orange, Sugar, or Fiesta look? Dunno. Depends on the polls.

Seems to me a Gator/Holiday/Cotton Bowl is more likely.

Responding while be temporarily oblivious to conference tie-ins, we need to play a top-15 program from a BCS conference in a bowl game. A VaTech, Penn State, Ohio State...in my opinion. Playing a Texas Tech, Houston, Missouri, etc. is now a lose-lose scenario. Win, and skeptics say now we beat patsies in bowl games. Lose......and unleash the fury of the May.

jason_h537: 11-2, and won't lose again? That's a bold prediction, and I have to respectully disagree with the way our D is playing. With BC, Pitt, UCONN, and Stanford still left, if we don't make any improvements with the D, we'll make their poor-to-mediocre QB's look like Jimmy Clausen.

Believe me, I hope you're 100% accurate, and every team is beatable (and we should be them). Hence, the topic of this thread...we can beat these "mid-major" like teams Pitt and UCONN, but when are we going to get over the hump and win a "big" game and stop hearing about how CW can't.

Agree mostly...I can see another loss in there If the D doesn't tighten up...Jimmy will have a day where he is mortal, and the D needs to show up...

Completely disagree with being a bitch though...won't have any of that

Ok 11-2 may be a stretch considering we dont know who we play in a bowl, but the front 7 is getting better with each game. GaryGray played well, hopefully the secondary gets better but i do not see any team on the schedule beating us. Not one. Stanford gave up 400 yards to Arizona's QB. Pitt aint shit.

I would love a crack at LSU or Ohio St in a bowl.

I think we could hang with LSU just because their offense and our improved run D. Just not in the Sugar Bowl lol so its not a home game for them.

I think LSU is a papre tiger. They play a weak schedule and will likely finish with 2 losses because of it but they reall are not that good. Wannna talk about overratted coaches. Les Miles took all the talent left by Nick Saban and has underperformed each year with them. Yeah he won a championship but in a down year for every team in the country.

I live in the heart of SEC country, and I think we could beat LSU. I also think LSU will end up with 3 losses this year before New Years Day. We may as well I agree our defense needs to wrap up better on tackles. They are doing better over the past two years I don't remember how many times I was ticked off because of a good hit but no tackle, by not wrapping up and the guy would run for 6+ yards afterward. Many third downs were converted this way. Working hard on 1st and 2nd down only to give up 3rd down conversion because of a lack in the basic fundementals is unacceptable.

One of the reasons our defense gives up so many yards is simply not wrapping up. So many time I seen us in a position to make a tackle and we don't wrap up. If we did wrap up the possesion would be over and we would get the ball instead of doing that over and over giving up more and more yards. Teo made a tackle on a screen pass that was perfect. He was the second player there he hit hard and wrapped up and the play was stopped cold. This is what Alabama does they hit hard and wrap up and gang tackle.

I think LSU would roll over us right now. In fact, we would struggle with most SEC teams. I do like the OSU matchup, though, but again their D is tough.

Again, the question was "when" will we finally win the big game and get over this hump. All I continue to hear about is statement games, and if Weis doesn't win this he's gone. Again, not a CW hater nor is this a fire CW thread...but how close are we really?

I frank am concerned about BC as they put up 52 on NC State.

Just wondering, if, and I say IF, ND goes 10-2 what makes anyone think that they will poll fault from out of the top 25 to the top 8? Really, how many of the top 25 need to die before ND jumps all those spots? They poll setters will not jump ND into the top 8 no matter what they do from here on out.

I say last year our offense was young and inconsitant. Then the bowl game came and that was their coming out party

The defense is a year behind so who knows what will happen if they get a month extra practice before a bowl game against a top 15 team.

And, therefor - by your reasoning that CW could only win with someone else's players - Leslie Edwin Miles, having arrived in '05 won the '07 championship with someone elses players.

Leslie is just getting by in an SEC year that is proving weaker than pre-season expected.

Had to have calls against Georgia that the ref crew was reprimanded for - the same crew that was suspended for the same crap in favor of Forida - - a Georgia team that might not even make a bowl this year.

No dude. They become your players by year 3 - he coached them for 2 years and is supposed to develop them. He wasn't coaching players recruited for Toledo. As much as everyone kills Ty for his recruiting, it wasn't as if his classes weren't top 40.

Charlie is responsible for years 3, 4, & 5. He should get props for winning in years 1 & 2 though.

That is with the same group of players from starting as freshman to now ebing a veteran group

Les Miles inherited a juggernaut built by Nick Saban and has seen his team go
06: 11-2
07: 12-2
08: 8-5
09: 5-1 with a cupcake schedule, only good teams they play this year are Florida and Bama, oh and i gauruntee both are losses. Im supposed to be impressed because every team choked in the last week to allow LSU to be in a National Chamionship game. Yeah Les has got a title but like i said earlier, so does Larry Coker.
