All this makes sense and does seem like a good fit. The fact that the ND plane was in New York a few days ago, also points in this direction. Time will tell.

That plane needs a cloaking device. It seems like everywhere it goes someone sees it and reports it on the internet. I'm convinced if Charlie was recruiting a kicker in Mongolia, there would be a ND fan or grad there to see it, and we would all know about it within the week.

Sounds like it is a done deal. This is going to be GREAT for recruiting especially. Tez, and that receiver should reconsider.

I just called a relative who has a few sources back in South Bend and he said that another factor that caused Brown's hiring is that he's a phenomenal recruiter of the Chicago area. Specifically on the defensive side of the ball. I guess when he was with Virginia when they had that good defense he was the one who recruited all the personnel.

Supposedly he's a funny energetic guy that always gave back to the communities in Chicago when he was with in the NFL. A lot of the guys he played sports with growing up are now highschoool coaches in the Chicago area.

I knew it all along but after hearing this...Charlie's a very smart guy. Good hire on more than one level IMO.

I think this is a great hire. I think Weis was smart by hiring Minter, at first, because Minter had been at ND and had been a head coach. Weis, being a first year HC needed former coaches around to help out. Now, Weis knows what he is doing and knows what he needs on his staff. After seeing good defenses out of scUM and UCLA, a similar DC should greatly improve the defense.

From what I gather, Brown worked under Parcells with Charlie at the Jets. He then coached DBs under Groh at Virginia and was said to have been one helluva recruiter. He is now with the Jets again under Mangini and looks to have done an admiral job with this years secondary. I'm guessing by now you are seeing his ties to Charlie and the people he's worked with. I say give the guy a chance. Sure we could possibly go after the bigger name guys like Pelini but what good will that do us if next year he bolts for a head job.

I say make Pellini the highest paid coordinator in the nation...ND can afford it. If he leaves after one or 2 years, that would mean that he did such a kick ass job w/ average talent that his services are demanded as a HC or NFL coordinator.

Remember all the DC's Holtz's teams went thru? They all put together winning defenses and moved on to HC jobs OR (Gary Darnell) they got their asses canned! Holtz never played around...I miss that & hope Weis has the same mentality. Win or be gone!

I think weis already has a defensive coordinator and it isn't pellini.Notre Dame will be fine with who they have and may get a few more then 2 years out of him if he is a success.Something tells me weis may have made a good choice. An average guy who is hungry to make a name for himself and coaching a team that is tired of getting ridiculed on defense.
yes, pellini would have been nice though. So would Walker,Tenuta,English,Norten,Strong, or anyone else with those credentials,but...

Corwin Brown IS the DC.

Without giving specifics away, rivals reports that he's been hired.

so are we gonna be runnin a 3-4 defense next year then?

What is WITH this obsession with the 3-4? If the 3-4 was the magical cure-all panacea BESTEST DEFENSEIVE SCHEMEAGE EVAR that everyone seems to think it is, wouldn't everyone in college football be running a 3-4 by now?

Y'know, I've got all this cash now... maybe I'll make it my mission in life to punish everyone who utters the words "three four" on here. MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

I think some see it as the solution to the lack of quality DT prospects. I personally like the 4-3 better and I also don't think we have the right type of DT to run a 3-4.

I know Brown seems young and still fairly new in coaching, but I think that playing and learning from some of the top defensive coaches in the league gives him a leg up on a guy who's never played above the college level and has been coaching for 10+ years.

What I like about him the most is this:
"Brown is well-schooled in the 3-4 Defense, having coached it both at UVA and with the Jets, but also has experience in the Tampa Cover 2 favored by Herm Edwards."

I really think that this guys is going to be the next big thing. Just give him a few years and a great recruiting class or two and people will be talking about him like they are about Pelini. We are going to have to get some very good assistants that can learn from him, so that once he leaves, Weis just tabs the next guy.

The reason it's not used more in college football is because there aren't many guys at this level that have experience running it and no one at any major school is going to just start experimenting with it.

The only teams in the NFL that use the 3-4 defense are the Steelers, Cowboys, Patriots and the teams coached by Parcells and Belichik disciples, and I think Weis is only the second in this coaching tree to be a HC at the college level.

As more NFL coaches come down to college football, the more they will bring guys with the knowledge of using the 3-4 defense, who in turn will teach others and the teams using it will grow.
