Irishdodger, people get fired all the time . Did he not pay Dan Reeves? And wasn't it that they told Dan that at the end of the season he would not be coming back and Dan decided to leave then and not finish the season ? Or did he actually finish the season ?

That's my point dayton. People get fired abruptly all the time & people quit abruptly all the time. This will blow over just like the Saban deal did & if Petrino wins he'll be hailed as a savior for his new school. If he leaves in 2-3 yrs it will have meant one of 2 things: he elevated the progam to new heights which garnered a better offer from a better school or he failed miserably & is canned.

The former would make AR a more attractive job then when Petrino took over. The latter would mean they have to start from scratch.

Oh yeah...we must count our blessings for getting Coach Weis. I read today that Petrino interviewed w/ ND in '04. It may have been mentioned in '04 but I was too distracted w/ Meyer or Weis to give a crap.

David Cutcliffe reportedly interviewing w/ Duke. His agent is Jimmy Sexton so he won't come cheap.

Norm Chow is an interesting name. He can coach QB's for sure. He's a darn good college OC. But is he head coach material?

Personally, I'd hire a defensive minded HC over and offensive minded HC 8 out of 10 times. But names like Petrino, Tedford, Chow would cause me to rethink that.

That's interesting that UCLA would contact Bronco Mendenhall about the job when they play each other in a bowl game. Maybe trying to distract him and his team. I would hope not, but does it strike anyone else as wierd ?

ESPNU is reporting that Houston has hired Kevin Sumlin as their HC. He has been the co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma the past 2 yrs.

You've got to remember where Tedford is. His Cal teams have not been great but they have been good. To have a good team at Cal is something. One standard (not the only one though) I like to judge a coach by is what his winning percentage is at that school in comparison to the schools all time winning percentage.

I wouldn't say that this year's Cal team was good.

The point about all-time winning percentage is well taken, though. But I think Cal is a funny situation. It's a big, famous school in the middle of a football hotbed, with a proud athletic tradition in lots of different sports. How did they manage to have crappy football teams for so long? It seems to me like the kind of situation where pretty much /anyone/ could have come in, worked hard at coaching and recruiting, and turned things around. With the notable exception of state-of-the-art facilities, many the pieces were already there for Tedford. It's a far cry from what Schiano did at Rutgers, for example.

(At least that's how I understand things. Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Don't forget UCLA. Someone just reported Houston may have filled their vacancy. So it looks like Michigan could be one of the last. UM is becoming the nerdy kid always picked last for dodgeball.

I also think UCLA should promote their def coordinater, Walker. I don't know that much about him, but having been in the program and having contact with the recruits, he may give them the best shot at stability.

I think that Schiano at Rutgers and Tedford at Cal are similar situations.

CA is a hotbed for football talent but NJ has a lot of talent too.

Both schools have never been good at football as far as I know.

CA has a better academic reputaton than Rutgers and may have some recruiting restrictions along those lines.

***************Breaking News*************

Petrino leaves Arkansas and expects to be named Michigan's head coach later today.

Reason: he's getting 100.00 more a year. Plus all the dear he wants to shoot. Apparently, he's not only a program killer.

As someone who follows 1-AA football, that's good for NIU, bad for SIU.

SIU used to be a little backwater nobody in footbally, but Jerry Kill turned them around and has brought them to 5 playoff appearances, but never getting past the semi-finals (lost to Delaware this time around, 20-17). SIU Football WAS Jerry Kill, in addition, SIU is losing a lot of talent to graduation, so they're in trouble.

I have confidence that Kill can make similar progress at NIU.

Bad Move for him. He should wait for a real program. Duke will never be more than a basketball school. They make Vandy look like a powerhouse and they have ugly helmets.

But compare:

Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe says he hasn't been offered Duke job - NCAA Football - Yahoo! Sports

December 14, 2007

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe said Friday he hasn't been offered the job as football coach at Duke.

Cutcliffe, who spoke at media day before the Vols' Outback Bowl matchup with Wisconsin, said he can't accept anything that hasn't been offered.

Cutcliffe declined to take any questions about the Duke position, but acknowledged he interviewed for the job. He's been Tennessee offensive coordinator for two seasons.

Some Alabama fans at a Christmas party tonight said that Rich Rodriguez was talking to Michigan.

WVU is my second favorite team. He cannot go to Michigan. CANNOT.

ESPN - Rodriguez meets with Michigan AD about replacing Carr - College Football

West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez met with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin on Friday to talk about the Wolverines' coaching job, according to media reports.

Rodriguez and his agent were in Toledo to talk with Martin and university president Mary Sue Coleman, according to Sporting News Radio, which cited unidentifed sources.

The meeting was confirmed to ESPN's Joe Schad on Friday afternoon by a source close to the situation.

Rodriguez, 44, was back in Morgantown on Friday after taking a flight from Ohio, and unwilling to talk about any possible interest in the Michigan job.

"Going to practice. I'm going to practice," he told The Associated Press on Friday, getting into his car after a trip to Toledo.

Michigan, which lured basketball coach John Beilein away from West Virginia last April, is looking for a replacement for football coach Lloyd Carr, who announced his retirement Nov. 19 after 13 seasons.

West Virginia athletic director Ed Pastilong said he was unaware Rodriguez, who has a hefty buyout clause in his contract, was in Toledo.

"He has not shared that with me," Pastilong told The Associated Press.

Pastilong would not say whether West Virginia had given Michigan permission to talk to Rodriguez, citing university policy.

When asked further whether he knew Rodriguez was talking to Michigan, Pastilong said, "Rich has not mentioned anything of that nature to me. Secondly, we have a strong commitment with Rich, a strong contract. We're strongly committed to him and he's strongly committed to us.

"I think it would be unusual that he would be doing that without sharing it with us."

Michigan athletic department spokesman Bruce Madej said he was unaware of any talks.

On the day Carr announced he was stepping down, Martin said he hoped to complete the hiring process quickly.

But LSU's Les Miles withdrew from consideration before he was scheduled to meet with Martin and signed a contract extension with the Tigers.

Rutgers' Greg Schiano said last week after being contacted about the Michigan job that he was staying with the Scarlet Knights.

After a 13-9 loss to Pittsburgh in the regular-season finale knocked West Virginia out of the national championship game, Rodriguez said he wasn't going to be on the move.

"The impact of your name being thrown about is sometimes a little overrated. It probably makes for a lot of angst among families and we don't want that," he said. "Sorry but you all are stuck with me here."

Rodriguez has a 60-26 record at West Virginia. The Big East champion Mountaineers (10-2) play No. 3 Oklahoma (11-2) next month in the Fiesta Bowl.

Last December, Rodriguez agreed to a one-year contract extension through 2013 after he turned down a lucrative offer from Alabama. The extension includes a $4 million buyout clause if he leaves before August 2008. That doubles the amount from the previous contract.

Beilein had a $2.5 million buyout clause in his West Virginia contract, but under an agreement with the university he agreed to pay $1.5 million to the WVU Foundation for leaving for Michigan with five years remaining in his contract.

Hopefully that $4 million buy out will nix this.

Oh my aching ass!!!! I hope youre right! Michigan football running the spread offense? Maybe they will finally be able to stop the spread on defense after practicing agains the offense? Thats if Rodriguez is hired. Thats kindy scary.
