Coaching Changes Thread

We'll see what Petrino is made of now. He went 41-9 at Louisville which is impressive. But he did that largely against substandard competition. He's now entering into a pool of sharks called the SEC. They didn't fire Nutt, but there have been rumblings about him for years and all he has done for them as a coach is had them fairly competitive in a very tough league.

But Broyles, Holtz and Harfield were all successful there. So maybe Petrrino will be too.

Man....on MNFB Arthur Blank was talking about him being the right man for the job....what a slap in the face to them!!! Honestly, I think that Petrino was way out of his element in the NFL!!!

Haha...I'm enjoying the fact that Michigan is still without a coach and Les Miles is on ESPN to shoot down rumors that he is going there on a daily basis. Thats gotta hurt recruiting big time.

To answer Solo. How you can think that what Saban did hasn't hurt his reputation is wild. Yeah he got a huge contract, but do you honestly believe that outside of Alabama people in power actually trust or believe anything that comes out of his mouth. As far as Miles goes, if you had a son who was a top flight prospect and Miles after not once but now twice has come out puplicly stateing he is not going to be the scUM HC trust him with anything he says while recruiting your son to come to the University of Mich. I couldn't. As far as what would happen if people ask me about changing jobs. Once you go puplic I can't understand the people you've said no to would even want to consider hiring you.

11 News Sports has learned the search for a new head football coach at the University of Houston is down to two candidates.

Former U of H and NFL coach Jack Pardee and Notre Dame Offensive Coordinator Michael Haywood are on the short list for the Cougars.

Pardee is well known and has had tremendous success in Houston in the past leading the Cougars and the Oilers.

Haywood, a Houston native, played at St. Thomas High School and Notre Dame before starting his coaching career. He’s coached at Ball State, Texas, LSU and is currently with the Fighting Irish.

Good luck to MIke I hope he gets the job. Not because I think he's a bad coach or anything like that. I would just like to see him get a chance to be a HC.

Here is the thing, the media has put it's nose where it doesn't belong and is making it difficult for a coach to pursue another job. The hiring process should not be privvy to the public eye.

If Les Miles were to be recruiting my son to LSU right now, I would probably try to steer him clear because I still think he is gonna wind up at Michigan. If Les Miles took the Michigan job and was recruiting my son, I would first hope that ND or VT would offer him a scholarship (my 2 favorite schools), but if they didn't, I would certainly tell him to take it.

This is a private matter that has been made public by a media with too much access and not enough discernment to recognize things that should be kept private. What is a coach supposed to say? There is no right answer.

I agree solo that the media should have aited and not stuck their nose in it. But once he comes out like he has and stated he will be back at LSU next yr. I can't see him leaving for scUM or anywhere else.

I said this before. Coaching in 1A is tough. But coaching in the NFL is a meat grinder. Who needs it? Let's compare:

College: 12/13 game season
Pro: 16 + 4 pre + post

College: Spring ball for a few days, make sure the guys lift.
Pro: Non stop draft, free agency, mini-caps

College: Basically decent guys with some knuckleheads you can usually control
Pro: Basically decent guys with some knuckleheads you can't control

College: An AD who generally leaves you alone to coach
Pro: An owner who may stick his nose in everything

College: $2M/year compensation - plenty to live on
Pro: $5M/year compensation - see college reasoning above

I think you'll see more Pete Carroll moves down than Bobby Petrino moves up in the future. Partially because of the growing suspicion of hiring guys cross-level. But also for the quality of life thing. My brother was in the NFL front office for awhile, (including a Super Bowl team) and for him the quality of life just really stunk. 24/7? 365? And Andy Reid was supposed to be one of the more balanced ones?

Who needs it?

BTW, you guys may not remember Carmen Cozza who coached at Yale for something like 35 years. I mean when you think of it, the Yale environment, job security, just have to beat Harvard every other year, the alumni probably make sure you get something on the side, the kids play simply because they love the game. There's something to be said for that.

I can understand why you would think like this. A lot of other people feel exactly the same way as you. I guess I just have compassion for the person that has been put on the spot by the media. He has a team preparing for a conference title game that if won, will earn the school millions. I can understand him wanting to put his teams worries to rest before that game.

I don't happen to think that Miles and Petrino and Saban are bad people. I try to put myself in their shoes.

You certainly did make a statement you knucklehead. Contracts mean nothing. You lack communication skills. You assistants mean nothing, as do your players.

You have no loyalty, nor morale compass.

I don't think they are bad people. I do think they are greedy and ego maniacs that think they are more important than their word is. And according to reports Petrino supposidly went in told his asst. that he had taken the Ark. job turn around and walk out. That was it.

Loyalty went out the window years ago in employee/employer relationships when corporate America decided to downsize and more recentlto outsource. Unfortunately, everyone is a "free agent" in today's society.

Contracts mean nothing to a lot of people. Willingham had time left on his ND contract when ND pulled the plug. The contract part does bother me, but I'm afraid it is simply indicative of the times we live in.

Are his communication skills lacking? I can't make that assessment from reading a few sound bites.

Does he not value people and his relationships with them? That could be accurate.

I don't understand why he left Lousiville. But I can certainly understand wanting to get away from Miami and the NFL. I won't villify Petrino just yet, but you do bring up some interesting points.

Oh, it gets worse. Bobby talked to Arthur Blank 6 hours before the game, and Arthur wanted to know what to tell the media if they were to ask him about Bobby possibly going back to college because he wanted to be honest. So Bobby shook his hand and told him "you have a coach", then his agent told Mr. Blank that Bobby was resigning with 35min left to go in the game!

WOW...if that last part is true, he is ruthless and that would definitely change my thoughts about him. What people say to the media is just a circus. It's all for show. I don't put much stock in it. But how you treat the people around you, I think this says volumes about a person.

I am not so sure that Grobe would be a good fit for Michigan. But hey, I don't really care who their coach is.

The Falcon QB said that after the game BP told them in the lockeroom that "they all needed to go home and look in the mirror and ask "What can I do to help this team"

guess he figured quitting was how he would help

I won't defend Petrino's actions, but I won't feel sorry for Blank & the Falcons, either. Somewhere Dan Reeves is laughing his ass off. He was fired by Blank w/ three games left in the season. ATL has been to ONE Super Bowl...and Reeves led them there. Since then...chaos.

I wanted to start a separate thread for all the extra cash, but figured I would respect the board and use the coaching changes thread to spread this piece of info, as I have not seen it posted anywhere...

It is being reported here in Houston that OC Michael Haywood is one of 2 finalists for the Houston coaching vacancy. Competing with good ol' Jack Pardee.

Irishdodger, people get fired all the time . Did he not pay Dan Reeves? And wasn't it that they told Dan that at the end of the season he would not be coming back and Dan decided to leave then and not finish the season ? Or did he actually finish the season ?

The newest Michigan rumor is that Wake Forest's Jim Grobe will be offered the job.

Didn't Grobe turn down an "opportunity" to be hired as HC some other college (Arkansas?), but said that he's content w/ being @ Wake Forest? If so, why would he then turn around and go to scUM (no ties that I'm aware of)?
