I think parents are an important part of any big decision making process for teenagers. That said, sometimes fathers get too full of their importance in the recruiting process and become part of the story themselves.

I've wondered if Clausen may be this type, but I get a different vibe here. He really seems to be sheltering them from too much hype and making sure they stay focused not only on the decision itself, but why the decision is important and what it will take to live up to expectations.

when you've got a kid who's as hyped up as Clausen is, I think virtually no amount of parental over-protectiveness is really "excessive"

yeah, there are too many recruiting services nipping at their heels trying to get them to say something out of the way. Then voila, here is the next big rumor that is not true.

"We knew Matt Leinart before he was Matt Leinart. We've known him since he was in the ninth grade, and to watch him develop into the greatest quarterback in the history of college football is fantastic – it couldn't have happened to a better person."

excuse me while i puke in my office trash can.

Agreed. For some reason he just doesn't fit into the "greatest" category. Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Muhammed Ali, MATT LEINART????

HELL NO!!!! At best he was a good college quarterback on a stacked and overpowering offense.

Pitfalls of Hype
That was exemplified when USC offered Jimmy a scholarship before the end of his sophomore season. Last month, Marc was awarded his own scholarship by the Trojans.
"Both boys are tremendously excited about USC offering them scholarships," said Clausen. "I think they're honored, and my family goes back a number of years with USC. Matt Leinart, Matt Cassell, Carson Palmer, Steve Smith played with Rick at Taft . . . our whole family has followed USC.
"We were very excited when coach [Pete] Carroll offered Jimmy, but we know this is a process. Both boys have to make their decisions over a period of time. They have to go to these schools, spend time with the coaches, the players and then see if it's a fit. This isn't about depth charts or the number of players a school has at a certain position. Marc and Jimmy are going to go where they feel the most comfortable, which is what we're in the process of evaluating.

"
"Not to say that about USC because I think that's a school both Marc and Jimmy have tremendous interest in. "I mean, all of this has happened much earlier for Jimmy than it did for Rick or Casey.

To be offered by a school like USC who normally goes through an extensive evaluation process with its recruits . . . we're honored.
"We've known Steve Sarkisian for a long time because he's a an Air 7 Sports guy. What we know about Pete Carroll is that he's a dynamic, charismatic guy whose players – past and present – just rave about him. He's a motivator and makes things fun for his players.

"I think we're very comfortable with SC. Being from Southern California we understand the expectations, but there are a lot of parallels between Matt and Jimmy. Every day these guys have to go out and impress. The media, the accolades, the praise . . . it fits. However, there are a couple of other good options out there that we have to explore."

Jimmy has yet to officially eliminate any schools from consideration, although speculation persists that Notre Dame and Southern California are on a collision-course for his signature. "The day Jimmy and Marc commit is the day Charlie Weis, Pete Carroll or whoever goes out and tries to find someone better than them," said Clausen.

B]I wonder if ND is really in the running, although Clausen may have to wait his turn at USC with Sanchez, et al.

It seems the whole article is USC and how great Pete Carroll is. We love USC, we understand USC, blah, blah, blah. The poodle already lost Reuland, and I think he knows CW will battle him for talent everywhere. I think we will be in a battle in SoCal, because if ND gets Clausen, the Poodle loses another and possibly many more big time players. He will also lose a lot of recruiting prestige around the USA to the team he doesn't like, ND. If that happens, he may not be able to sew up recruiting in SoCal so easily, or for that matter around the country. So, I expect a big time recruiting war here and around the country.

That's the point I was going to make. When IrishIllustrated interviewed Jimmy's dad, I was left with the impression that it was a done deal in our favor.

I still think that with Brady leaving next year, Jimmy will turn to ND where he can start as a true freshman. But 'SC will by then already have either Booty or Sanchez as a secured starter.

here is something from a South Carolina site

http://www.goupstate.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060215/PSPORTS02/60215008/-1/PSPORTS

By Phil Kornblut
If being surrounded by familiar faces in college is important to him, then QB Jimmy Clausen (6-3 190) of Westlake Village, CA might take another look at Tennessee. According to Clausen's coach Bill Redell, the Vols have offered scholarships to Clausen and five of his teammates. Of course, Clausens two brothers both quarterbacked at Tennessee. But according to Redell, Tennessee is not a major factor right now. "It's Notre Dame, Southern Cal and South Carolina as far as I now right now, in that order," Redell said. The coach added that to his knowledge USC has not yet offered any of Clausen's teammates. Clausen has been to junior days at Notre Dame and Tennessee and is expected, along with some of his teammates, to attend junior day at USC later this month.

Sure is a lot of hype with this kid. My question is will Weis hold out till the end for him, or will he give this kid a time line of his recruiting. Also, anyone think that he could enroll in spring semester if he graduates HS in December?

He plans to graduate and enroll early....that has already been confirmed....lets hope its irish though. Therefore, since it will be an early commitment, it will snowball into a big class for whichever team he picks. Even if he was not going to enroll early, Weis would definately hold out for a kid of his calibar. My guess....he'll announce for the irish by the end of summer and bring tyler, benn, and more friends to Notre Dame where they will learn under the best coach in the land....Man I hope I'm right.

No, but it's a lot more closer to it that Young and Wenger were because Young and Wenger never really were.

These two guys are probably going to go to school together when all is said and done, but Tyler is going to be a four year senior. Clausen is going to be an early enrollee, so anything can happen.

ND is recruiting one QB and one RB (maybe 2). They seem to be in very good shape with Clausen, Tyler and Benn.

I understand your first point, but, you would think he (the rivals guy) would ask about the other schools a little more. Even if it is slanted towrds USC

With these articles, Irishkid, they most times do but they don't print that stuff. Each team has their satellite site to Rivals and Scout, so the writers write about the kid's feelings to that particular place. They won't go into detail on Irish Eyes or Illustrated about USC as much.

As for Clausen, I've looked at some video lately and I'll tell you guys one thing: Mike Paulus is VERY VERY good. As a matter of fact, his frame is more of an NFL futured frame than Clausen's is right now. Paulus can sling the skin, man. You get him into Weis and Mendoza's world, look out.

If they don't get Tyler and Clausen, which I believe they will anyway, Paulus and a guy like Darren Evans won't be the end of the world.

Jiggs, you posted early on that EGO might be a problem for Clausen. Whether or not that is the case I wonder about the effect of this publicity on the rest of the team. If you believe all that is written about this guy you would have to believe that whoever gets him is guaranteed a NC! Wherever he goes he is going to carry a lot of expectations and I am not sure that is a positive for the team.

We talk about him taking over the QB job as a freshman. What about Wolke, Sharpley, Frazer, and Jones? They read these articles too! The last time I looked Football was still a team sport that takes everybody working together to suceed. If he comes to ND he will have to beat out 4 pretty good QB's as a freshman and 3 later on. Maybe he's that good but let's not pop the champagn just yet.

Incidently. I just finished a conversation with a friend whose son is a junior at ND. He says that the word on campus is that Clausen has already verballed to Weis. I put NO faith in such reports but maybe somebody knows more about this.

That would be a great recruiting hat trick. However, I would like to see this kid Paulus some more. Any relation (just kidding) to Ron? I remember all the hype when Ron came to ND. Although he didn't really fit the offense of the time, the memories keep me grounded to an extent about incoming STARS.

He's legit. Clausen will get all the ink and pub, but don't be shocked if come NFL Draft time Paulus is the guy you're hearing about. Bigger frame, all the tools and then some.

BigDon, I have heard the same things...Clausen is already in and they plan to announce it the weekend of the Blue and Gold Game publically...or some time close to it. A kid like this, you just never know. The profile is much too high to assume ND has him locked up already. But if they do, I'll be at the point where I can believe Weis and staff can get ANYONE from ANYWHERE.

Quarterback Jimmy Clausen (6-3, 190) of Westlake Village, Calif., and some of his teammates might attend USC’s junior day Saturday. Clausen’s coach Bill Redell said last week that Clausen’s favorite’s list looks like “Notre Dame, Southern Cal and South Carolina, as far as I know right now, in that order.”

Quit if Jigg's, you're giving me goose bumps! Getting Claussen if nothing more just for name recognition sure would be a great selling tool for coming to ND, and surley put ND in another top ranked recruiting class. But to be quite honesy, I'm not sold on him.

Neither one has QB'd a college team, yet. So there is no answer to this question.
