Carlson's injury

I hope Carlson is back for the SC game. We need him. No knock against Freeman, but at this time of the year I am much more comfortable with a known commodity.

Weis said in his presser that Carlson will be out until the bowl game, but he feels very confident in all 3 of the TEs next on the depth chart (Freeman, Reuland, and Yeatman).

When you're talking about a guy who was going into his senior year, I don't care how many stars he had coming out of H.S. anymore. The question is, after his junior year, where would he have been drafted? Would he have been drafted at all is a better question. Yeah he was a decent plalyer, but that's about it. Charlie did the rest, and in one year his draft status rose tremendously.

But going into that year he wasn't known by anybody outside of South Bend (hence, he was an "unknown"). Same went for John Carlson before this year, same goes for Freeman.

Fasano was one of the cornerstones of his recruiting class. Raved about by BGI, Scout, and Rivals. He was selected to the '02 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Not bad for an unknown, huh?
Second leading receiver at ND as a under Willingham and Diedrick in the Worst Coast Offense.
Starting his last season he had received wide acclaim from the media. He was widely discussed as one of the premier TEs that would go down in ND history along with MacAfee and Casper (apparently an unknown to you alone) he had 42 career catches during his 370 minutes of PT, he was a Preseason John Mackey Award Candidate (Best TE), Preseason The Sporting News had him listed as the 4th TE in America behind Mercedes Lewis, Leonard Pope, and Greg Olsen. Fasano had a great senior season and was the 3rd TE selected in the NFL Draft.

Fasano was identified as an outstanding player in high school and he remained in the public eye throughout his college career. As I said previously in this thread,

As for Carlson, last year Charlie noted that when NFL scouts had come to check out Fasano they all said, "Who's that guy!" Charlie said then Carlson had the talent he just needed the playing time to show his skills. Carlson didn't have the acclaim in HS or early in his career that Fasano did. But among professionals his talent was recognized.

I just find it odd that Weis is so tightlipped about injuries and all of a sudden he is open with the press about his QBs favorite target.

Why would Charlie come out and say definitively that Carlson is done for the regular season so quickly? The pros dont even divulge that information for most of the following week.

Well let's see. One, that would be against the rules. Two, that would be a sanctionable action. Three, because he waits until the last allowable day to list his players does not put him outside of the rules nor does it make him a liar.

B) Everyone knows Belichick lies about the injury report. Last year he listed Corey Dillon as doubtful for a game he started and had no apparent injuries in. He does it every week and I don't think there are any rules against it.

When you're talking about an offense where the leading reciever had roughly 750 yards the year before Charlie got there, that doesn't say a whole lot. He had 27 receptions for 367 yards and 4 TDs his junior year. These are the numbers that made him one of the best TE's in Notre Dame history befor that big senior year?

There are 30 preseason John Mackey Award Candidates, I can't take that serously. So he was one of the top 30 TE's in college football going into his senior year, big deal.

As for the Sporting News, that's one paper. I wasn't hearing his name on Sportscenter heading into his senior year. Wasn't reading all these pieces about what a breakout year he was gonna have in SI or on Sportsline.com. Basically almost all of the national media barely knew who he was before that season. If you think anyone was talking about him as one of "the premier TEs that would go down in ND history" before his senior year, you're crazy. All those accolades came as the season progressed and he established himself. NO ONE (outside of you, apparently) thought he'd established himself as a great Tight End before his senior year though.

I think he remained in YOUR eye throughout his college career (and a lot of ND fans' for that matter), but not the public eye. Going into his senior year, if you had a discussion about the 10 best TE's in college football, I'm not sure Fasano's name would've been mentionned depending on who you talked to. He CERTAINLY wouldn't have been mentionned as a member of the top 5 by most people, outside of you and the Sporting News, before the first game of his senior year.

Yeah, so says Charlie. I take all that kind of stuff from him w/ a grain of salt, he's a head coach, part of his job is promoting his players.

I'm not saying Carlson doesn't have skills, obviously he does. I just don't think you can look at him and go, "Yeah, everyone knew he was gonna be a great one before this season." Same goes for Fasano before his senior year. Nobody but the coaching staff and the staunchest Notre Dame fans saw those 2 seasons coming.

What it comes down to is this. Does Anthony Fasano have his senior year under Willingham? Does Carlson have this year under Willingham? Or most other college head coaches for that matter. I don't think they do. If Fasano's career had continued on the track it was on heading into his senior year, he'd of been a 5th round draft pick at best. Charlie comes in, and he's a second round pick. Carlson probly wouldn't even be drafted. Now he's probly a first day draft pick, and if he comes back next year he's got a great chance of going as high the early 2nd round.

That's all Charlie's coaching job. Which is why I'm not overly worried about Freeman doing the job the rest of the way.

Well the loss of Carlson is a big blow to our offense, it may also provide a positive in terms of one of the other TEs sneaking up on USC and having a monster game. I think Freeman is more than capable, anyone remember his catch in the B&G game last spring? This guy has waited almost five years for this chance, and I don't think he'll disappoint. Maybe being under the radar will be a huge advantage going into USC.

• Carlson definitely out—Senior tight end John Carlson, who injured his right knee in the first quarter against Air Force, will not play against Army and will not play against Southern California. On Sunday, Weis left open the possibility that Carlson could be back for the Trojans.
“I could lie and say he’s day-to-day and try to throw a smokescreen out there,” Weis said. “But he won’t play this week, he won’t play next week, he’ll be at the hotel, he’ll travel with us next week and he’ll be ready for whatever bowl game it will be.”
Weis confirmed that Carlson does not need surgery, just time off for the knee to recover.
