Carlson at Fullback??

I was surprised to see the quote below in the South Bend Tribune. I missed part of the game yesterday, but I watched the whole 2nd half and didn't notice Carlson at fullback. What's the scoop? How did he do?

With fullback Asaph Schwapp now declared out for the season, Weis lined tight end John Carlson up in the backfield for more than a handful of plays Saturday.

"I think that sometimes your offense can get a little stagnant if you just use your main formations from different personnel groupings," Weis said. "So remember when you guys were asking me about where's my fullback? There's my fullback, so you've figured it out."

Go take a look at some of my pictures. He was in the backfield quite a bit. In fact, I was wondering if McConnell was hurt.

I'm just wondering if this is another one of Weis's out-of-the-box, get the best guys on the field moves. My guess is that McConnell is okay, but just not in the same class in terms of speed and athletic ability as Carlson and Freeman.

It will be interesting to see who plays fullback against UCLA.

weren't a lot of them where Carlson went in motion and ended up lined up at TE? I remember him doing that a lot with Fasano last year.

Weis lines Carlson up as a TE, WR, and FB. That makes it hard for the D to get the right people out on the field. Not bad thinking.

He kind of blew some blocks, I'd rather see a true FB in there. I like him in the H-back role, going in motion, but I'd still rather see him do what he does best, make outstanding catches every game! He's sort of doing the same thing Shark did last year, every game your like "no he didn't really catch that?"

Agreed I didnt see any blocking advantage to having him at FB I believe Munir's first cary he totally missed his block which resuloted in a 4 or 5 yard loss. Theres a difference in a blocking TE blocking off the line compared to running fullspeed and having to be a lead blocker.

The only time I really noticed was when the offense had their backs to where I was sitting. If they were coming towards us, it looked like Walker was getting 6 yards a carry each time and he'd end up with 2 or 3.

We saw Carlson in what looked like more of an H Back spot than fullback on one play. He also lined up wide in empty backfield sets quite a bit too.
