He's announcing Saturday.

All of the attention has centered around McCoy, Young and Carufel. Where does Lewis fit in?

I really wish one of the safeties would decommit so we'd have a spot open up for an extra lineman, especially a defensive one. We need tons of help!

We need the help just as much in the defensive backfield.

Wow, this is big news. At this point, I see us splitting with USC on McCoy and Lewis.

Also, as I watched the game last night, I kept thinking about the lack of speed that all of those safeties seem to have. Not good.

I'd love to split with USC. Would be a victory in my eyes.

Agreed.

Anyone know if the interview was pre or post Fiesta?

About 5 PM EST yesterday according to scout.com, where I got it from.

Just before the game.

I guess I just missed something along the way but I assumed Lewis was not in the ND picture. Word was that he was almost sure for Ga!

I can't help thinking the remaining recruits want to talk to each other at the Army game to see who's going where. Whatever the case the Lewis announcement will be important. It is promissing that we would get either him or McCoy.

Regarding Young, he is visiting Michigan, PSU, and ND this month and will not commit before those visits. His case is a "crap shoot" at this point (unless someone has some updated info on this.)

We thought the ND recruiting was finished for this class but I can't believe Weis isn't working it hard these last few weeks.

I have to agree with Young.

The Young family is originally from PA and are PSU fans. That might not bode well for ND's chances with him. Still, I like their chances with him. I think he can come in and make an impact quickly.

If they end up getting Lewis and McCoy, I'd be just as thrilled. ND needs as much future talent on defense as they can get their hands on. I too, thought Lewis was out of the picture. But he has them in his final two. That has to be good.

Ted Ginn is faster than just about any safety in college football, well except Zibby who ran him down from behind. Most safeties aren't 4.4 guys. It's all about being in the right position to make the play. And then actually making the tackle when you have the chance.

True, but it wasn't just Ginn. They seemed to miss on all of the guys that came through their zones. Seeing as some of them had as high as 4.72 in the 40, I can't help but feel these guys are LBs and not safeties.

Further, NFL-caliber safeties run the 40 in 4.5-4.55 or less. If we continue to play the same scheme, we better have guys in this range, not 4.6-4.75.

I too keep hoping those numbers are old, were run on a rock strewn track, or in snowshoes otherwise forget Ginn, they wouldn't be able to cover FBs and TEs much less WRs and RBs.

Those guys were WIDE open.

Ginn, Holmes, Gonzalez. All day long.

The one thing I can say: Smith had to scramble a few times on third down and not by design. There were a few times (his first fumble) those guys were covered and he had to improv.

But they still got smoked most of the day.

Usually, all season long, when a WR ran past our safeties, it was because they were out of position or heading the wrong way. Safety play is about being in position and making correct reads.

As for the incoming guys, the tape doesn't lie. If they can move, it shows and the coaches can see it. I honestly think our biggest speed upgrade needs to be made on the edges at DE. We just didn't get much push out of them.

i would to see one of our young speedy backup safeties move into the starting lineup next year so ndukwe could move to LB. i love chinedum and his playmaking ability but i just don't think he has the closing speed to catch up to a WR after he gets burnt. i think with his size he is better suited at LB

I think we'll reach a point where Bruton will force his way onto the field. Reports early last season were that he could end up a gem in his class. He certainly had some nice tackles in kick coverage. And the young man can scoot.

How about putting Fiesta Bowl rehash in the Fiesta thread and recruiting in the recruiting topics?

From Scout.com USA AA Bowl Game Practice Reports/Posts

Q. Thoughts on ND's players at the game and any feeling on where Butch Lewis ends up any talk down there?

A. Talk is of Butch to ND, but we'll have to see on Saturday. There are several guys that are really impressing and a few that haven't lived up to the hype, but there is a lot of time left to impress.

Could this be Kai Forbath situation?

Butch Lewis wants to announce on Saturday at the game while Gerald McCoy wants to wait another 4 weeks. Does CW take the one ready to commit now rather than gamble on getting Leaked at the last minute? Is there room somehow for both Lewis and McCoy to anchor the middle of the DLine?

Here's how I think it will work out:

Okay, Lewis has to have been told that there is a scholarship available. What that means is anyone's guess. But I bet Charlie gave McCoy a deadline and he couldn't meet it.

I ahve been told that Lewis absolutly dominates the line(atleast on fild) I would be moer than happy to take Lewis. All I want is some cover corner( McNeil and Walls) and some pressure on the QB(Wade, Ryan and hopefully Lewis or McCoy).

That article is stupid, Lewis is not down to two he has three teams on his list: USC, ND and UGA. This class needs to land a big time DL to improve the defensive side of this class. The secondary we have back there right now as well as the LB's and D-line are good enough when coached properly to at least maintain-yesterday they were not coached properly therefore they looked terrible. Team speed, Zibby caught both Ginn and Holmes in that game, its not a lack of speed its a lack of coaching for postions.

Down To Two
Butch Lewis knew he wanted to make a decision at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, and many expected the Aurora, Colo. lineman to announce between six schools. However, Lewis says he is down to a handful of teams.

"Right now, it is Notre Dame and USC," Lewis said, adding that he is still looking at Georgia as another candidate. "They are not completely out, it kind of hard to turn them down.

"Notre Dame and USC stood out because of my visits. I saw the good and bad in both of them, and they turned out to be the best two choices.

"I really like the tradition, the coaches, and things like that at Notre Dame. The education is top-notch so it speaks for itself. At USC I really like the team chemistry and I really bonded with the D-Line, things really went well out there (on the official visit)."

Headlines are supposed to grab attention concisely to get the reader to read further. "Right now, it is Notre Dame and USC, " is a direct quote from Lewis who then elaborated about only those two in the ensuing paragraphs discussing ND and USC visits, traditions, coaches, education and chemistry.

The only significant comment about UGA was related to telling them No rather than Yes, "... it (sic) kind of hard to turn them down".

His Scout profile acutally lists 6 schools with ND and USC as HIGH INTEREST and UGA, LSU, MIA, and NU as LOW INTEREST.

As of that interview the headline is consistent with the quotes and the profile.

McCoy is a force. There is not a doubt about it.

But Butch Lewis isn't too bad either. They need one of them, if not both. If they come away with no defensive tackles in this class, the defensive depth is going to be far too shallow.

I think Paddy Mullen is going to be on of the DTs. Just called it a weird dream I had the other night.

Teaming him with McCoy would be nice.

I think Lewis will go Spoiled Children. He's been too far off of the radar.

I'm sticking to the Holy Trinity of Carufel, McCoy and Young.

Penn State will be tough to beat for Young.

Well, I had a dream the other night I was at a banquet in South Bend and Mullen was introduced as an 2nd team All-American DT. Of course, I also had a dream that we won our bowl game. LOL
