As much as I like the idea of keeping Charlie (and I'm praying to Touchdown Jesus for that miracle) and a smooth transition, the idea of coach in waiting seems questionable to me. I mean, say you keep Charlie, hire a coach in waiting (ideally to work on the D) and then ND wins a BCS game next year and the glory years of the CW era begin. How long will the coach be expected to wait?

That being said, anything that keeps Charlie recruiting and keeps him working with the offense and keeps him as the spokesman of Notre Dame Football as it is meant to be is better than rolling the dice as far as I'm concerned.

Don't Think So

Don't Think So

Guy never played college football. In their guts, the players don't respect him. How can he tell a player to suck it up if back in the day, he never did. I wonder if the success he had with the Patriots was related to "Belichickgate?"

From Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis to help Golden Tate decide whether to return - ESPN

"Tate said he will put a lot of faith in what Weis has to say.

"He's always been honest with me. That's one thing I like about him. He hasn't told me what's best for the program or what's best for Notre Dame he tells me what's best for me and what's going to help my situation out," Tate said. "I almost feel like he talks to me like I'm Charlie Jr. I really do appreciate it."

From Brady Quinn: Firing Charlie Weis would be a mistake - ESPN

"Personally I think it would be a horrible decision if they did make that change," Quinn said."

and on and on and on. Say what you will about CW, but his players respect him.

Lots of guys have been GREAT coaches who never played the game. It is not a prerequisite to be a great coach. I'm sure it helps, but it is not a prerequisite. That's a weak argument.

And how do you know if the players respect him in their guts? You are not them, and there are TONS of direct quotes from players past and present saying how much they love/respect him. The captains grabbed him by his arms before the last game and brought him out arm in arm in a sign of solidarity.

As for his professional success, if you think that Belichek is/was the only coach doing those things, you are too naive my friend. It's a cutthroat business, and everyone is looking to gain an edge. Now, Belichek was stupid enough to allegedly keep doing it after he got caught. But remember who ratted him out...a former member of his staff who helped him do it and just so happened to coach against him twice a year. And we know how bad of a guy 'Mangenius' has turned out to be.

Anyways, ask Tony Dungy about Weis. He recently said that he'll have his pick of offensive coordinator positions in the pros next year. Another guy on Dan Patrick the other day (for the life of me I can't remember who it was) said that CW will have about 8-10 jobs to choose from next year. I think I'll take the word of NFL guys that CW's success was because of himself, not cheating.

CW failed overall as a head coach, but it wasn't because the players didn't respect or he didn't play, and he didn't get the job because of of Belichek cheating. Sorry to jump down your throat though, welcome aboard and Happy Thanksgiving!

He should do the honorable thing...

He should do the honorable thing...

Resign...

I am sympathetic to all those who say we should give Charlie more time, mainly on the basis of what a good guy he is...Of course, if we had applied this standard fairly, we'd still have Ty, who was a better guy with a similar record.

I know we all have rose-colored glasses on when it comes to ND, but this guy has proved he's not head coaching material, and all of you who express the thought that we seem to be on the cusp of greatness are delusional. Football, as Charlie seems to forget, is composed of multiple elements, of which offense is but one...important, sure, but defense, as history has proved again and again, is even more important. Defense is a foreign concept to this coach, and anyone who suggests we're on the cusp of greatness in that area is smoking from a funny pipe.

He's had five years to demonstrate progress on BOTH sides of the ball, and, at least with respect to D, has been an abysmal failure, against marginal overall competition, and hopeless against ranked teams. Our pride has taken a beating, and if some of the air has been let out of his overinflated ego as well, he ought to do the administration a favor and annouce his resignation.

He should be fired, but I disagree that he should resign. ND was dumb enough to give him that contract, he signed it, gave it his best possible effort (his work ethic has never been questioned), and didn't get the wins. So he deserves to be fired, but why should he resign? They'll buyout his contract, and hopefully things will end amicably (I think it will). But personally, I believe his job is to finish out the contract that he signed until he is fired. I'm in the camp that he is under no obligation to resign...

"Dan represents the university's values on and off the field, and his team has been competitive this year," DiStefano said. "He has done all that we have asked him to do, and although we all desire more victories, we also recognize starting over with a new coach right now takes us away from, not closer to, our goals for CU football."

This was Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn talking about keeping Head Coach Dan Hawkins for another year. This is what I want to hear from Swarbrick very soon. Hawkins is 16-32 right now, BRING CHARLIE BACK!!!

what Bohn doesnt openly admit but all colorado football insiders know is that the $3.1 million buyout was a definite issue for colorado. what else is Bohn going to say? "coach hawkins blows but we really are not in a position to buy him out, so he is staying." so, he said the only thing he could to save face for everyone involved.

money is not an issue for ND.

All I was trying to put out there was that there is that I would like to see Weis back for another year. Buyout or no buyout.

by posting Bohn quotes, it certainly implies that Weis should be back because....

Totally agree, ND offered the contract, he signed it, done. Mr. Weis see the cashier at window 3 to collect your winnings. Charlie gave us and ND everything he had and it did not work out this season. I think they were close to turnung the final corner, but now we will never know.

But what I'm afraid is about to happen ND will get another coach and if he is not the home run......then we are looking at another 5-7 years of more of the same. Really, ND is at a point of no return. A return to the top or to be nothing but a footnote in the history of college football. I hope not, but it is just not looking good at all, CW leaving, JC leaving, no proven long ball hitting coaches outside of Meyer and Stoops and getting them is a crap shoot at best. Bad dream.....must wake up.

Nothing to be afraid about, we just need to get a real college head coach. Not that complicated , he failed now we move on. Let's get a winner in here that can make us respectable again.

mick2 - the only appropriate response to your thread is: get your head out of your ass. if you are happy with a 6-6 record two years in a row, after a 3-9 disaster, go root for Indiana.

GO IRISH! BEAT TREE! SAVE CHARLIE!

There's been nothing more infuriating to see "fans" root against the Irish at least since Navy.

Let's be clear: wanting a new coach or being tired of losing or thinking Weis isn't getting it done does NOT equal rooting against ND. I'm getting a little tired of the insinuation from some people with phrases like "haters" etc. Get over it. If Weis is retained I'm not going to whine about the people who wanted him retained. We are all ND fans. If he's fired I guess Swarbrick is a "hater."

I agree with you, wanting a new coach is not the same as rooting against ND. And wanting CW back does not mean rooting against a (likely) new coach whenever he may come.

But saying without qualification that this team finishes 6-6 on the friday before the Stanford game, a huge chance for our players to finish their season on a somewhat high note, is something else. Somewhere else there was a post by somebody who was with a bunch of alums rooting for Pitt a few weeks back, "just so it wouldn't be ambiguous." Just as disturbing was the reported boos as the team walked out the tunnel to start the Conn game.

By all means you're entitled to your opinion on who should be head coach. I think CW, but understand why others disagree. What I don't understand is the people who seem to take pleasure in the heartbreaking losses this team has suffered in the past few weeks or people who write off these kids in tomorrow's game. I think that as a Notre Dame fan, you're part of a tradition that epitomizes the best aspects of College football and that you have a responsibility to live up to that tradition, just as the coaches and players are expected to. For the fan, it's relatively simple. Keep it classy and root for your team. I'm sorry if my tone implied something else.

If nothing else, remember that every time ND take the field its competing with UM for #1 on the all time wins list.

Beat Tree.

I do NOT understand how one can argue that Weis deserves a fifth year given his accomplishments (or lack thereof) this far into his coaching internship.

He already has his fifth year, no one is arguing for his fifth year. This was a supportive thread for Weis backers don't read it if all you have are negative things to write.

yes, everyone. please stop saying "experience" or "internship." that would be insulting to all scientists and college interns across the country.

"TRAIN WRECK" would be far more accurate.......oh wait, that would be insulting to incompetent train engineers.
