Just a week before the national signing day, a surprising turn of events has St. Thomas Aquinas linebacker Brian Smith making an oral commitment to Notre Dame instead of his original choice, the University of Iowa.
Smith made the change Tuesday morning, opting to commit to the Fighting Irish after spending months as a future Hawkeye.
Last August, Smith, a four-star rated linebacker on Rivals.com, ended the hectic recruiting process by making an early oral commitment. However a phone call last Friday out of the blue — or more appropriately, from South Bend, Ind. — changed his mind.
“We were contacted by the new defensive coordinator (Corwin Brown),” Smith said. “In the summer, (Notre Dame) was very well in the mix. I was just waiting on the offer so I could commit. But in June, I was told I didn’t fit into the old defensive coordinator’s plan. … I guess he wasn’t impressed with me, but the new defensive coordinator came in and liked what he saw.”
Smith’s senior tape, which showed flashes of his All-Metro season, helped sell him. Smith said Brown offered a scholarship last Friday, but Smith wanted to visit the campus before deciding. That idea didn’t sit well with Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz.
“Me and my dad decided we were going to be up front,” Smith said. “We called (Ferentz) and let him know the offer came. Every time something new came up, we let him know what the status was.”
“I told them I was going to visit, and coach Ferentz said if I was going to make that visit, then we both have to move on.”
