Brian Kelly was named Eddie Robinson national coach of the year Thursday morning. The award, presented by the Football Writers Association of America, comes after Kelly led Notre Dame to its first undefeated regular season since 1988.

"Notre Dame, under Coach Kelly, has returned to national prominence in the college football ranks," said FWAA president Lenn Robbins. "This award recognizes that accomplishment for the 2012 season, a season that began with 124 teams vying for an elusive undefeated campaign. Notre Dame was the only bowl-eligible school to accomplish that impressive feat."

Kelly will lead the Fighting Irish against Alabama for the BCS national title on January 7.

"Iconic" his how Kelly described the matchup earlier this month.

"How can you not think about the houndstooth hat of coach (Bear) Bryant and then coach (Gene) Stallings, then you think of Ara (Parseghian) and Lou (Holtz). It's college football, it's what it's supposed to be. That history and tradition is great for the game, but for me, it's still about the process. I want to be the best team on Monday, Jan. 7."

Gary Andersen, Dave Doeren, Urban Meyer, Will Mushchamp, Bill O'Brien, David Shaw, Bill Snyder and Kevin Sumlin were the other finalists for the award.

Not too shabby for a "team that lacks style points"!
