The 2012 team wouldn’t score in double digits against this team. Chuck Martin vs. Lea would be a huge mismatch for the ‘12 team.

They would terrorize Golson.

The 2020 version is better on D, O, and special teams.

Hypothetical:

You can add ONE player from 2012 or 2015 to the 2020 roster. Who you got?

Im down to Jaylon or Fuller. Probably would take Jaylon simply because his effect would be felt every single play, instead of a few times a game.

The offense is far more desperate for an elite home run threat though than the defense is for a field general.

Ya'll need to put some respect on Manti Te'o's name.

There's 3 eras in Kelly's time at ND:
1. Buildup to NC game
2. Fallout
3. Post 4 win season Kelly

IMHO only version #3 can compete with Lou Holtz. Lou had to do a different kind of rebuild as well when he got here and had more success against TOP (USC, Miami, etc) programs. Moreover ND was closest thing to modern Alabama during that time.

Lou was great out of the gate and fell off towards to end, but still got 2 National Championships (I count '93, I don't care who doesn't and could have had 3). Kelly is still figuring it out and is dominating COVID football. He could have been justifiably fired in the middle of his time here whereas Lou couldn't have been.

Definitely Fuller. This D is already vicious. Fuller would add a dimension this O doesn't have.

Deshone Kizer would too. Ian Book has made the most of what he is capable of as a QB, but let's be honest he cannot make a number of throws. The playbook literally does not include certain routes because they are tailoring to his limitations/abilities. With Kizer, you get a QB who can see the whole field and make the throws.

I don't disagree that this offense would benefit from a vertical passing game and that Fuller would help, but do we think Ian Book has the arm strength to utilize Fuller's speed? Avery Davis is fast but you don't see them using him deep very often, and I think it's because Book can't hit him consistently. IMO it's why the deep game consists of a big body WR running a post route and finding the jump ball.

My picks:

1) 2015 DeShone Kizer
2) 2015 Jaylon Smith
3) 2015 Will Fuller
4) 2012 Tyler Eifert

I was tempted to say Kizer, but I'm not sure if it was just my DeShone homer coming out. I guess it just depends what version of him you get.

I don't remember Kizer as being an inconsistent QB. He was probably the only consistent aspect of 2016.

I think if Kizer hung around for 2017, that team makes the playoffs.

I meant 2015 vs 2016.

I’m surprised no one mentioned Stephon Tuitt. I know our DLine has been consistent, but it lacks that star. Tuitt can play any position along the Dline, and an overpowering defensive line can be a great equalizer against a great team like Bama or OSU.

Fuller

Fuller to the field, Mckinley to the boundary, and Skowronek in the boundary. Along with baby Gronk, that's a passing attack that frees KW up even more. And that's an offense that can keep up with Alabama given our lines play.

We have our Jaylon light in Wu. The only other player I'd probably consider is maybe Tuitt from 2012, though I still think the answer is offense here.

This guy did.
