I can't find anything on it either. I'll treat this strictly as unsubstantiated rumor at this point.

it isn't a rumor if ESPN reported it, however, it might be a mistake

I believe its just an early prediction, didnt one of ESPN's NCAA FB analyst jump the gun and say on the radio Kates had already committed, prematurely.

He is going to take his time. ND is in the running, but Penn State is pushing hard now, too.

ND has a good shot, but Kates is starting to get annoyed with the rumors and pressure. He's patiently waiting.

To quote Kathy Bates from WATERBOY:

"ESPN is the devil"

The devil comes in the form of Stuart Scott, Trey Wingo and Trev Alberts. And Michael Irvin.

Here is the latest on Kates. He visited Pitt a couple of weeks ago:

"I looked around the school and everything and I liked it," he said. "I think coach Wannstedt was a good guy and they have a real good coaching staff. I think they're going to be pretty good. Coach Wannstedt is a down-to-earth guy and very easy to talk to. I also liked the defensive line coach because he was down-to-earth too."

While on the trip, Kates took in a practice.

"It was really intense and everyone was working well together. It seemed really cool."

"I don't know where Pittsburgh stands right now," he said. "I'm taking a look at everybody right now. I haven't thought about official visits at all yet."

Kates has expressed interest in Notre Dame, Penn State and Syracuse as well as Pitt, Virginia Tech and Maryland recently.

ESPN has to have two confirmed sources before they report anything. I know this by listening to ESPN Radio. Whenever there is breaking news in the making, they always need another source to confirm the initial reports. Either Kates is ours or there is misinterputed information among Lemming's sources.

Off Topic:

Lemming got :censored:-canned from the four-letter-network last Winter. They have Tom Luginbill now. I don't know why, but I have two guesses: 1.) The Disney empire wanted to setup their own shadow-organization called Scouts, Inc., cramming down your throat what they want you to hear, and 2.) Lemming said Weis was one of the top recruiters in the country.

(Yes, I am dead serious about the second point. You may recall that when Weis was hired, the 'expert' analyst on ESPN was from Rivals, who pointed out that Weis' first class was terrible. Hence, point 2 was my logic at the time for explaining why they brought in that schmuck rather than quote the guy on their own payroll. It would appear, 12 commits later, that Lemming was right.)

Weis first class was terrible...morons should have thought about the fact it was Ty's class which was left in sambles after he was canned. Fast forward to 2-1-06, ND will have a top 5 class. Speaking of recruiting, I was looking at Texas' class for 06 and I feel so sorry for the 26 verbals.....26 underachievers already.

Terrible for ND standards, but just as good if not better then every school on our schedule this year with the exception of Tennesse, Michigan, and USC.

Weis did an awesome job bringing in guys like Turkovich, and Kuntz. Their were alot of critics when Weis was hired who said he wouldn't be a good recruiter. I know for a fact now that these critics were wrong. Weis will recruit well even if we don't win alot of games at first.

The first 12 guys, so far so good.

I'm curious to see how things shake down by the time signing day rolls around. We're talking five months from right now, which is a lot of time.

They're going to need another o-tackle that is superior to Bartley Webb, plus two guards and a center. Darrin Walls should be getting recruited the hardest right now.

If the O and D Lines don't take shape by signing day, this class could fall to the middle of the pack.

But a start nonetheless.

Sergio Kindle. Remember that name. If he underachieves, beers are on me.

I couldn't agree with you more, The focus needs to be turned to the O and D line but Walls should be getting recruited the hardest. He's a Must.

Is it just me or does it seem that CB talent is the hardest to judge is high school? Ellick, Wooden and Lambert were supposed to be big time talents. Hopefully, Lambert and Wooden can develop under the new coaching staff, but neither has really seen significant action until this year. Freddie Parrish was a 5 star CB/S and we all know what happened there. Hopefully Walls can live up to the hype if we land him.

I wonder if there will be any position switches...Duff came in as a RB and he developed in a 3rd team all-American under the tuteledge of the Davie and Willingham regimes...

I wouldn't mind seeing Hoskins develop into a corner or wide receiver, especially with Aldridge on the way, makes sense for Hoskins, and it makes sense for the teams needs at certain positions.

I am awaiting the arrival of Aldridge....I have an image of an even better Julius Jones, if that is possible

Rivals has a pay story posted with the headline "No Truth to the Rumor that Kates has committed."

I'd really like to know what is actually going on here

Both ESPN and BGI are staying steadfast on their claim that Kates is Irish. BGI reiterated that Kates told Sapp he's committed.

IF it is true, it's a huge pick up for C-Dub. I just don't know why no one else knows about this?
