Michigan picks San Diego State coach Brady Hoke as its new football coach - ESPN

Did not see its own thread, the shut down yesterday is probably responsible.

Hoke isn't a big-time name. He doesn't have a big-time record (47-50). He hasn't held a big-time head-coaching job (Ball State and San Diego State). Unlike Rodriguez, he hasn't won a BCS bowl or a conference championship.

He needs to prove himself to Michigan and its large and passionate fan base, a good portion of whom aren't doing cartwheels about this hire. Brandon might have wanted Hoke all along and former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr certainly is in his corner, but the hire lacks the hype that many fans want, even if hype doesn't matter in the end.

He also could turn out to be a flop on the big stage, a guy better suited to jobs like San Diego State and Ball State. Michigan can't afford too many more years like the last three, especially in an improving Big Ten Conference.

You have to sift through most of the love he is getting for good nuggets like these. This has been fun to watch their coaching "search." The best article I have read about Hoke was obviously written before he was hired (now most scUM fans are putting their best foot forward). Besides the sarcasm, which is a little over the top, generally a good read and waaaay better then the lip service espn is doing...

For the most part, their coaching search ended up in a miching fan meltdown! Gotta love it!

His first year might be a little rough.

8-4 is doable.

Western Michigan
Notre Dame
Eastern Michigan
SDSU
Minnesota
Northwestern
Michigan State
Purdue
Iowa
Illinois
Nebraska
Ohio State

The games in bold are the ones I'm predicting them to lose.

Random thoughts:

I hated the search, worst ever, seriously if you want to know how not to conduct a head coaching search see Dave Brandon. I hear there will be free pizza after...

I'm rather 'meh' about hoke, I read good and uncertain things about him. The uncertainty being his track record, obviously.

At this point it would be foolish to try and guess a record for next year, you don't know who is leaving (hopefully none!), and you really don't know what kind of O he'll run.

He can beat Navy, take notes. (sorry had to get my dig in)

Tough schedule OOCS besides being locked into us....yeah right.

2010 records:
Western Michigan 6-6
Eastern Michigan 2-10
SDSU 9-4 (coach now at scUM)

Avoiding Wisconsin and Penn St in conference helps too, but I would be very surprised to see 8-4. They will lose 2 of 3 against NW, Iowa, and Illinois (all on the road) to end up 6-6.

With the new divisions with their joke names
one word starting with L: Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern
another L word: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin

I saw on a website scUM plays Illinois, Purdue, and Ohio St in 2011 and 2012. Are they ever going to play the other teams from the other division? I know they will always play OSU, but are they just conviently in the same conference as PSU or Wisc but do not play anymore?

Our game against them I feel will still be very tough just because of the environment. First night game ever at the Big House? Have to think its going to be ridiculous there.

BURN! I will say that I find it really funny that Michigan happens to play SDSU next year. What are the chances...

Also, why on earth is Michigan playing so many "Little Sisters of the Poor"? Western Mich, Eastern Mcih, SDSU (might be good, might drop off mightily), and then the three worst teams in the Big Ten.

I'd be pretty shocked if UM doesn't go at least 8-4.... my question is if they will be remotely competitive against OSU or will it be more of the same?

i am quite fine with Brady Hoke to Michigan.

SDSU lost 4 games by a total of 15 points.
they gave TCU easily one of the toughest tests all year.
they pounded Navy, Beat AF, lost to Missouri by 3.

highly competitive every single week, and Hoke can certainly bring in far more talent to Michigan than SDSU. i am 100% confident that the Michigan defense will show immediate improvement next year.

he has recruting ties in southern Cali. that will be a good thing.

he has shown a willingness to adjust the offensive game pretty significantly from week to week depending on opponents weaknesses.

i dont need a big name to come to Michigan. if he does the job at UM, he will make his own legacy.

i could even see 9-3, as i think they can beat either MSU or Notre Dame (especially if Floyd is gone)
