What do you think about him? With his sudden power surge (on pace to hit 80+ homers), there have been some rumblings about steroids on local sports talk shows.

What do you think?

Svoboda,

I think individual baseball accomplishments and milestones no longer impress me. Pujols being on pace to hit 80 HR does not excite me. I'm skeptical of all of them.

I pay attention to what each guy is doing within the scope of his team. The Indians have some great hitters on their team....but they're slowly falling further and further behind as summer draws near. What Pujols is doing has vaulted his team back to the top of the standings.

To get my interest, you'd better be leading for the Triple Crown in September or approaching DiMaggio's consecutive hit streak. If it involves home runs, I will be cynical towards whoever is hitting them. And I think as fans we have every reason to be.

Unfortunately, in MLB, anytime a player of Pujol's size and strength approaches a milestone or record, steroids will be a topic (whether the player is using performance enhancing drugs or not). Pujols was always a large athlete (unlike McGwire and Bonds who when they entered the pros looked like any one of us) and I am not saying that Pujols is using, but that allegation will ALWAYS be there as long as these inconceiveable milestones are being broken year in and year out.

I'm with Jiggs in that I am not enamored with the home run record anymore. After the McGwire and Sosa race was over and the allegations of steroids popped up, I lost whatever interest there was left. Triple crown, I'll watch. Most consecutive games played, I'm interested. Perfect games, fantastic for the game. To watch a bunch of drugged up goliaths bang 800 foot homers over the fence, may have cared when I was a kid, but now I have seen the evil that is MLB and steroids.

This guy came into the league on steroids. When he hits 90 some year what are people going to say? Well, we've never seen any evidence...it must be due to the smaller ballparks, and watered down pitching talent...uh, well, maybe he's just that much better than everyone else...oh all right, fine, he's on steroids.

It's hard to care much about any of the stats in baseball any more. They're meaningless. It's all about championships, which is as it should be. Fans just have to cross their fingers and hope that the less-juiced teams win out, and that no teams led by steroid-aided players win. Beefed up Luis Gonzalez has a title, as do the Canseco/McGwire A's, and the Pudge Rodriguez-led Marlins, so that's too bad, but at least Bonds, Bret Boone, Sammy Sosa, Palmiero, Giambi have all been denied.

The guys don't have to be huge to be using.

Luis Gonzalez, Brady Anderson, Raffy Palmeiro. When he did the finger pointing and said he never used, I believed him. Look at the guy.

Using juice doesn't require the body mass. A guy can still get cut up without the bulk and still be stronger. Pujols is crushing the ball right now. He could hit 80 this year after having 40 something last year. When a guy doubles his output, I have to demand he be tested.

YAWN.............Is it Sept 2nd yet????

While Pujols did 'come of age' in the Roid Age, he's been a consistent power hitter (with a decent avg.). I'd like him to beat BB's record/s, just for the sake it, but those records will always be tainted no matter what. Even if Pujols is clean, which I believe he is, there's always going to be a shadow following him, rightly or wrongly.

Oh I agree, I was just naming the obvious guys. Wells named David Dellucci as a user, and when you look at the numbers, it's a legitimate guess. Other users include Armando Rios, Benny Santiago, Matt Lawton - not guys you'd guess at.

I suspect everyone in the league except Juan Pierre, and I especially suspect Pujols.
