I think Boise State is the most complete while Oregon is the most dangerous. Auburn is the only other team that belongs in the discussion as of today. Obviously, things could change by the end of the season.

I agree with you that there isn't any obvious elite this year, though Oregon's offense could be one for all-time.

And a lot of BCS schools have lost to WAC schools. That's the point: there's more parity in college football than ever before. Oregon was just the 1st team in 20 years to become a first time ever AP #1. With fewer scholarships and more kids playing and training like it's a full time job, the college football landscape has changed faster than the BCS system acknowledges. Boise State shouldn't be locked out just because they aren't in the right conference.

I agree, which is why I strongly advocate a playoff. A similar thing happened two years ago when we went 15-0 in lacrosse but because we were in an inferior league (the GWLL) we got a #6 seed in the tournament and an ACC team we beat handily got a #5 seed because of their strength of schedule.

The point I'm trying to make is that Boise might be a great team... but it is like comparing apples and oranges when you contrast their schedule with the ones played in some of the major conferences.

I don't think they deserve to play in the NC with the way they avoid playing teams like Nebraska who wholeheartedly offer to play them but Boise makes unreasonable demands to avoid a game. They could play a harder schedule if they wanted and that would give us all a better picture of who they are but they purposely do not through fault of their own. Do they have the talent to compete? 100% absolutely they can. Do they deserve a shot at the NC? I guess that is a matter of opinion. It seems we are rather split on it.

When did Boise St make their schedule for this year? 3 years ago? Would you have bet that Nebraska was going to be a better team than Oregon or Virginia Tech this year, three years ago? Or even right before the season started? I wouldn't have. And frankly, I'm not all that convinced that Nebraska is a great team this year: I think the Big 12 North is weaker than the WAC.

I agree on a limited playoff, but then these same discussions would come up about the 8 versus 9 team and so on... the simple fact of the matter is that college football involves so many teams and that they all play so few games that we will rarely have a satisfying champion. This has become increasingly true as power conference teams have loaded up on out of conference cup-cakes, thus increasing the odds dramatically that we end the year with more 12-0 teams.

Anyways, you're right: for now it's a close call. I'm glad that most everybody discussed it in a civil fashion, it's an interesting conversation.

maybe it's just me but as I watch Boise St. tonight they easly look like the number 4 team in the country, or better. I know Idaho is only 4-5 and are a bottom dweller, but Boise is making them look like a high school team.

In my opinion anyone that plays D I ball is at least decent, but Idaho looks like a gymnastics team trying to play football for the first time.

I guarantee you that Oregon would hang near 70 points on Boise State. Auburn would do something pretty close to that too. Bottom line is we have no idea how good they are... they've blown out all of the bad teams they've played and gotten up for the two mediocre teams on their schedule.

Boise State would win the Big East. Boise State could probably run the table in the ACC as well. They would also have legitimate shot in the Big Ten and Big 12. But they wouldn't have prayer at undefeated in the PAC10 or SEC and I can't think of an argument that would convince me otherwise.

This Oregon team is a lot better than last year's Oregon team... and a TON better than the Oregon team that started the year in 2009. Isn't that obvious to everyone? Heck, you are completely ignoring that LaMichael James only had two carries in that game last year. So that is one completely obvious difference between the teams beyond the QB. Comparing the teams this year to those that played over 14 months ago may not be comparing apples and oranges... but it is darn close.

Recent events: TCU did a number on Utah last week. I wonder what would happen to Boise St. if they were as much under the radar as all other top teams. Like what their recruiting practices are like and what classes the athletes take and what were the SAT and ACT scores etc...


I find it interesting that Dan Hawkins could do so well at Boise, and fail so miserably at Colorado. He just got fired mid season over there.

On a side note, this has been the best broadcast of a football game ever.

They just mentioned Kibbeh, a ridiculously good Lebanese (or Syrian*) food. Before that, Lou gave Mark May a tough time about Pitt's loss. And finally, they mentioned the Williams vs Amherst game earlier on. Quality viewing.

*But if you have a choice, get the Lebanese version. This applies to most Arab food, it's always better in Beirut.

I bet that blue field has a mood affecting effect on visiting teams. This is something the NCAA should get involved in. I think Boise has won 60 in a row at home. Well, I said near 70. I'm talking 55+. Considering VT scored less points in 38% of their other games (including a game against James Madison) I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility to assume Boise State might have a vulnerable defense.

I think it's more crazy to say you would take Boise St. -14.5... but hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I look forward to an Auburn loss and Boise St. versus Oregon so I can take Oregon +14.5 to the house

I am not saying i am the same as them, but i have trained on regular soil and on concrete then have to go to Iraq and do real work in the desert on sand and nothing changed.

So if someone one who plays a game can't get that into a game then they aren't real "ballers" in the first place. A field is a field is a field.

Boise isn't the biggest, strongest, or over paid team. But they have heart every time they step out on the field. They could have folded in the game against Oklahoma but instead prevailed and won. NONE of the "TOP" schools would do that.

The "top" schools care nothing more than about the NFL, if they get down they will fold to reduce injury and secure a spot in the NFL. I wish i was making it up but it is the truth,

But on to football, i played alot football also, but on the other side, i wasn't the fastest or the most athletic. But i did my job, as i feel Boise does, they have nothing to lose. I noticed if i droned the coaches out after they coached me and just played the game and did my assignment, we won, otherwise i was pulled. (ruthless coach).

But if you can carry out a plan it will work no matter what. No one athlete is better than the other but if a whole team of athletes is on the same page it will be flawless, just my opinion.

Excellent point. I was going to mention Olympic rinks in hockey (or Oregon's new basketball court) but your point is better.

If a team can't overcome a blue field, they don't deserve to be on a green one either. Also, Boise's away record is not too shabby either, so it can't be that much of an advantage (I think you notice it a lot more on TV than you do when you're standing on it).

I guess my "lol" didn't work like it was suppose to. The part about VT winning on a down day was a joke. But I am sure that VT could beat Stanford and USC when they are on.

VT has some pretty decent speed, not Oregon speed but good enough. Stanford is built like an old school team that can't handle speed that well, look at the Oregon game. And USC is just not all together, I mean they almost got beat by Hawaii and did get beat by a 3-6 Washington team.

Coach Petersen coached for Dan Hawkins at Boise State. Plus, just because you have success at one place, doesn't mean you will at another. Maybe Colorado has issues other than Hawkins. Who knows? Petersen is the real deal. He is also a stand up person and goes after kids and coaches that are the right fit for Boise State and for his system. I don't like the field either, but I don't think it gives some crazy advantage.
