They think they can command a top coach but who worth their salt would want to take this job that has unrealistic expectations. At this point, ND should hire one of their own, Gerry Dinardo. This is nuts. All these reports contradict the other. Petrino got an extension and is staying. Hawkins sound to be the same situation, but he's said he'd be interested in ND and would take the job if offered. Who the hell knows anymore?

The bottom line is the administration needs to realize what ND currently is, and act accordingly. Wether that's lowering academic standards, joining a conference, throwing a ton of money at a coach (Jon Gruden), and getting some better atheletes into the program.

Until you adress the core issues, it doesn't matter who the head coach is.

If they keep the BCS, joining the Big East could be the most beneficial for the Irish. With some of the better teams leaving and an automatic BCS bid going to a Big East team, the Irish could fare well in that conference and we play BC, Pitt, etc every year anyway.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting a bad feeling about this. I read a report yesterday that the university was contacting Petrino (who said he wasn't interested) Tom O'Brien, and Mark Mangino. Now I can see Petrino and O'Brien, but Mangino is 12-24 at Kansas. If they are really talking to this guy, that cannot be a good sign for this program. If they actually hire the guy, its going to be a hellish 3 years. Whether you liked him or not, firing Ty Willingham could very easily turn around and bite Notre Dame in the ass. I would much rather have Willingham back then having a coach with a record like Mangino's running this team. What about Randy Walker who surprised a hell of a lot of people with Northwestern this year? Last time Notre Dame picked up a Wildcat coach, good things happened.
