Penalities. We need to eliminate the mistakes as it's important that we play mistake free against Michigan.

More rushing yards. Line needs to get just a bit more physical on those run plays. Darius also needs to "consistently" hit the hole. 2 yards is better than -2 anyday. Other than that.....we're legit. I gues Goia's not so bad, huh?

Plenty of concerns. The D still got gashed; the O protected them by dominating time of possession. Way too many guys left wide open deep or in the end zone, mostly by Lambert, who was just awful today. Better pass rush than last week but still pretty weak. Dumb o-line penalties persist, and hurt some drives that might have been TDs. Brady threw some really ugly passes early on that cost the team points. Etc.

Overconfidence is a big concern. This team doesn't deserve to be overconfident. They're good, but I don't think they played so much better today than against Ga Tech. The difference is that Ga Tech played their asses off for a half, and Penn State played their worst possible game on both sides of the ball.

The team and staff should be happy, but should forget about the win immediately. Next week is the week. Win next week and then we'll talk.

As for Gioia, glad he made his kicks, but if you don't see a difference between the situations and settings, and the pressure of the kicks, and the import of the kicks...

He needs to show he can make important kicks. He had a clutch spot against Ga Tech and he blew it.

I agree that the situation was different. Oh well, I'm going to go do something else. You guys are buzzkillers. We're 2-0.

Amen. Gioia had a solid game. I feel much better...admittedly he did not have to make any "clutch" kicks...but let's face it, he made the first two...when it was NOT at all clear that we were going to dominate. So, in my eyes, they were clutch enough.

Good job Gioia!!!

I think PSU's biggest mistake was not going after Quinn. Instead, they sat back and watched Weis dissect them alive.

Going after Quinn is the best way to neutralize this offense. We did it last year, so did OSU. The result, 17 and 20 points relinquished, respectively. I think we have the LBs to place meaningful pressure on Quinn. Our new DC had an internal feud with our old DC about blitzing more, so I think this will work in our favor.

My hope is that Nd gets overconfident and comes out flat.

1) Run Defense. Biggest concern for me. Last week PSU was not able to run against Akron. They seemed to be getting yards against us far easier than we got them.
2) Quinn seems crappy in the first quarter. I want him to settle down and play better during the 1st quarter.
3) Our Running game. It was NOT at all impressive. However, PSU is supposed to have a good run D...so maybe that was it.

...You guys are buzzkillers. We're 2-0.

And it's killing them.

Coach Weis noted last week Gioia had a mechanics issue. He said it was identified and already addressed. Well done, Coach Weis, Coach Polian, and Carl Gioia.

That's a fair assessment. Pressure needs to be put on Quinn or he will pick you apart.

It'd be nice if all the issues could be resolved so quickly.

As long as they are resolved before they cost us a game.

;)

At the end of the season I just want us to be 13-0. Ugly or not...13-0.

What the hell is this supposed to mean? Like we're somehow worse fans than you, or not real fans, because we can objectively assess the team's strengths and weaknesses, and hope they get corrected? Yea, ok. I guess Weis isn't a real fan either, because you better believe he saw the same problems we did, and will spend the next week trying to fix them. He won't spend that week patting anyone on the back for winning game 2 out of 13. It's a long season.

But yea you go ahead and be a better fan than me. Everything is perfect! Every game will be a blowout! Hooray.

Later this week I'll post my scouting report on M.

For now, though: nice game, Irish. There's nothing sweeter than routing a ranked team. Harp & Guiness all around.

Cheers.

LB's still a major problem. Again, they were out of position quite a bit. PSU was gaining rushing yardage all over the place. I'll be interested to see what the average yards per carry was against us today and also how many tackles the safeties made covering up for the LB's. Michigan will run it at us all day and control the clock and keep our offense off the field next week unless we fix this major problem somehow.

Other than that, it was a beautiful game by the rest of the defense and the offense performed at a very high level. It was a great win. Bring on the skunkbears!!!!!!

Mine isn't really a concern it is a gripe. I didn't like the defensive play calling in the 4th. I know the game was over, but I wish we wouldn't have gone into the fake prevent.

Offense:

O-Line still having some mistakes and I would like to see them get a little more aggressive. The mean streak needs to come out and they need to say in the huddle "Darius Follow Us To The Pasture".

Brady did show some bad passes early but seemed to get in rythem later in the game. I think he needed that first TD pass.

Darius' running will pick up if the O-Line steps it up a knotch.

TE/WR looked good.

Defense:

DL played ok, Victor did get a sack but a couple times they were pinched to one side and PSU cut back on them. Overall I feel they played well, Laws was working hard he was doubled a lot today.

LB played really well I thought today. Crum was a force in the middle even though he got beat on a move by the PSU Rb that one time and missed the stop on 3rd down.

DB's played so-so, to many guys getting behind them. Zibby was hitting hard. Lambert played terribly. I'm sure he will hear it this week.

Special teams was good. FG kicking still scares me a little seems to be all over the Goal posts but they are going through the middle. Punting unreal. Coverage good too.

Did anyone notice that Darius is bad at following blockers? I went back and looked at a couple plays where he got caught trying to run around the end...if he had followed Schwap he would have gotten more yards.

Paralysis by analysis?

I can't quite figure it out. I simply think his mind or instincts tell him he can turn a corner against a D and beat them. (which he generally can't do) Instead, he should be following his blockers... Autry Denson was always pretty disciplined that way, hopefully DW will follow suit.
