(CNN) -- Author Tom Clancy, whose novel, "The Hunt for Red October" propelled him to fame, fortune and status as a favorite storyteller of the American military, has died, according to sources with his publisher and family. He was 66.

The cause of death wasn't immediately available.

A Baltimore-born former insurance agent, Clancy was known for writing meticulous thrillers focusing on political intrigue and military tactics and technology. He published 28 books -- including a new novel yet to be released.

Several were made into Hollywood blockbusters, including "The Hunt for Red October," "Patriot Games," and "The Sum of All Fears."

Seventeen of his novels appeared on the New York Times best-sellers list, according to his website. Many of them reached the No. 1 spot.

His writings also provided the inspiration for the "Rainbow Six," "Ghost Recon" and "Splinter Cell," video game series.

His writing gained him a loyal following within the armed forces in the United States and abroad, giving him inside access that frequently informed the plots of his books. But in a 2003 CNN interview, Clancy said he was always careful not to reveal classified information or sensitive details of how the elite troops he often wrote about operated.

"I'll never decide for commercial reasons to put something in that endangers our national security. You just can't do that," he said in a 2003 CNN interview. "There was one thing, I discussed with a friend of mine in the Royal Navy. I told him a story I knew, and he said, well, Tom, you may never repeat that, as long as you live. And I haven't."

His new novel, "Command Authority," is scheduled for December publication.

I read a lot of his books while I was active duty. They were the only ones you could find in the ship's library. I was hesitant at first, but I got wrapped up in them very quickly. One of the best military/spy authors of all time. R.I.P Tom.

R.I.P. Tom, he did so much research into providing accurate descriptions of his stories, truly one of the best writers we have seen. You will be missed

Also worth mentioning that he wrote a bunch of non-fiction military history books that were excellent reads, like Every Man A Tiger. All of his work was great though!

Damn. I loved his books. The Sum of all Fears(the movie is awful) is one of my favorite books. The Hunt for Red October is a classic, too. Sad.

Hate to see this.
I've literally read everything from the Jack Ryan universe, a few like Rainbow Six, 2-3 times.
One of the only authors who got all of the small nuances of the military and the politics that can sometimes intervene correct.

Without Remorse (the earliest book chronologically), Red Rabbit (which ties in a plot to assassinate Pope John Paul II) and all of the new books featuring Jack Ryan Jr. (The Teeth of the Tiger, Dead or Alive, Locked On and Threat Vector) are my favorites and highly recommended to anyone who likes spy/military thrillers.

RIP Tom, reading your books allowed me to enter another world and I thank you for all of the hours I got to spend there.
