In the NFL, there are rules regarding hiring coaches. A move has to be a promotion to hire a guy under contract on another staff.

That rule does not exist in college, but there is sort of an unwritten rule. However, it is pretty much a given in college that there are different levels of prestige and with with a leap in prestige often comes better compensation. ND sits up near the top on the prestige meter. Just because a guy is at another DI school doesn't mean a job at ND isn't a promotion, especially if he is given a much higher salary.

That said, I still wouldn't see any of those guys on the list. I could see an NFL position coach (not a DC) or a college coordinator from a lower rung BCS school or a successful mid major.

not a single mention of weis' first choice - Al Golden? granted, going from head coach to assistant is a tough pill to swallow, but minter did it. as did cutcliffe. golden isn't exactly burning it up at temple, either. he didn't win a single game last year and he's only got one win under his belt this year.

perhaps it's too soon to close the book on golden's career at temple, but since we're speculating anyway, i find it curious that he's not being mentioned when he was charlie's first choice two years ago.

Isn't this Goldens first year at temple? I thought UVA lost Golden and Prince at the same time

golden has only been there one year? help me with my memory...was it that he had accepted the job at ND and then backed out of it before reporting to campus, or was it that he was offered the job and never accepted it in the first place?

He never accepted it. He stayed at Virginia for another year. I think they made him assistant head coach or something.

Romeo Crennel is NOT going to come to ND so you can forget about that.

Bunting is my choice because of his defensive background and recruiting ability. Hey, if it doesn't work out, he too can be replaced per a carefully worded contract.
