Arizona State Sun Devils pull coaching offer to SMU Mustangs' June Jones, sources say - ESPN

SMU coach June Jones had accepted an offer to coach Arizona State and minor contract points were being ironed out, a source said, when his representatives today received a call saying the offer had been pulled.

The source said Arizona State's explanation was that "it took too long" and the school president was moving on.

"We had accepted the deal," the source said. "I've never seen anything like this."

Arizona State had no comment, but chief operating officer Steve Patterson told Houston TV station KRIV that Jones would not be the Sun Devils' coach and that the process continues.

One source said negative reaction from fans and boosters to the selection of Jones prompted the reversal. Arizona State has now negotiated with and ended negotiations with two candidates, including Houston's Kevin Sumlin.

SMU President R. Gerald Turner told The Dallas Morning News that Jones will remain as the Mustangs' coach for 2012.

Earlier Wednesday, sources said the school was preparing to announce Jones as the Sun Devils' next coach.

Kind of weird considering I feel like ASU needs June Jones more than June Jones needs ASU. If he sticks with SMU, and can continue the turn around there, we all know there is plenty of talent locally and history behind that program to make it a winner again despite some of the dark days in their past. ASU on the other hand has all the makings a potentially impact team in their conference and nationwide, however they struggle with consistency and to find a coach who can get them over that hump. Screwing up the Jones handling like this certainly isnt going to earn them any style points with other potential candidates either.

I heard June Jones, Jerry Glanville, Buddy Ryan, Kevin Gilbride, Mike Locksley, and Tom Cable all got into a rumble as June was about to sign his new contract.
