You know, he came on strong but kind of tapered off in the second half of the year.

There are guys out there like Mercedes Lewis of UCLA and Jeff King of Va Tech that could go before him.

If he can go, he should. John Carlson will be great as a starter. From what I've seen, I think he could use another year. But if he and Weis hear other Weis, jump while his value is high.

I have the feeling that Fasano wants to come back for one more year of seasoning under Weis' NFL type offensive scheme and give it a shot for the NC. It would be a nice receiving group with Fasano, Carlson (double TE formations), McKnight, Shark, Grimes, etc. Quinn will have a field day, especially with the returning linemen (Harris, Morton, Santucci, Sullivan and the tight ends blocking for him. It will be a real offensive circus, plus we have all the backs returning (except for RPN). Then we have all the new recruits and the freshmen who got a lot of seasoning this year.

Now all we have to do is fix the defense and nobody will be able to touch us!!!!!!!!!

PS: Please God, keep Quinn healthy all of 06!!

Weis has said that TE's unlike other positions really don't improve their draft status with another year of college ball. I'm sure Weis will welcome him back with open arms if he decides to come back. Stevenson & LeVoir are the only two of the starting linemen that have exhausted all their eligibility. I am assuming Weis wants everyone else back and the University will allow a 5th year where necessary.

He wouldn't be leaving after three years. He's played 3, but he's been at ND for 4. He graduates this year. That's one reason why I'd have an easier time supporting his decision if he goes.

Agreed!! He's had a great year and I don't thnk another year, even if it was great, would increase his NFL worth that much. The risk-reward ratio is not favorable for him.

One reason - two words - compound interest. He only has so many money making years in him. If he does one of those years for free he will never be able to get that cash back. And not only that but the money he makes next year will continue to make money for him as the years go on.

Also with TEs the money you make in your first years is more than those in later years (Gates, Gonzalez are exceptions to this)

All depends on the need of the teams selecting -- if you want a TE that can run block, pass block and catch he will go as the #1 TE. If you want a WR wearing a TE number then Mercedes Lewis will go as #1 TE and Fasano will drop down to 4-ish.

Scoop is right. Carlson is a stud.

There are a slew of tight ends out there, including guys that could most likely jump early. It is tough to find a good one that can be a difference maker.

The Bears are in dire need of a tight end right now. There could be three or four taken in the first round this year alone. I'd have to guess with those numbers, Fasano would be included in the first three rounds somewhere.

That's good enough to make the jump.

The answer is Fasano because there is no question. His 56 catches to Carlson's 6 trump him immediately, yes.

Provided opportunities, I like Carlson in the starting spot once Fasano leaves, whether it is this year or next. He, like Hiben, was pretty highly touted coming into Notre Dame. I like his makeup. Not sure on his blocking skills, but he is definitely someone that will step into the role once his time comes. The 2006 offense doesn't really worry me that much.

What do you want him to catch? We had two WR's catch over 1,000 yards and our first TE catch over 500. There's not much else to go around. The fact that Carlson was not the first option at TE is an indication of how good Fasano is and the fact that Fasano had a two year head start on him. Carlson will be fine. Charlie himself said NFL scouts are already asking about him.

The only other player whose abilities Weis has openly bragged about this year that I can remember is Brady Quinn.

as mentioned before, the NFL pipeline may be very important for next year's recruiting class. if sc can't land the size class they want and lose their stars to the draft this year, they'll be out in full force to compete with us for the same guys. we're deep enough at TE to lose fasano and have him as an example of yet another player we sent up.

DONT GET ME WRONG...i love fasano. hell, i'm a bisignano. i love how hard he plays (and that he's italian) but to have him go would not be the difference between another pointless bcs game and the nc.

If Stovall can go as high as one of the first two rounds (a guy generally thought of as an average receiver before Weis came), it will be seen as a more impressive accomplishment than a high Fasano pick.

I do agree that we have enough depth at TE. I don't think anybody should care what he does.

fasano took an injury to either the wrist or shoulder around mid-season....maybe so cal? can't remember. could just be coincidence, but his second half of the season was certainly more 'human' than his first.
