GAINESVILLE -- Florida Gators defensive tackle Gary Brown was arrested Sunday in Gainesville for allegedly hitting one woman and scratching another.

Brown, a 19-year-old freshman from West Gadsden High, near Quincy, was booked into Alachua County Jail at about 8 a.m. Sunday, charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery. He was released on his recognizance Monday. According to police records, Brown battered the two women during a party at a Gainesville apartment complex after being asked to leave.

Police also said Brown sprayed the contents of a fire extinguisher on people at the party. He and a friend left the scene before police arrived, and Brown was arrested later after a traffic stop.

Florida assistant coach Steve Addazio, currently serving as the team's head coach, suspended Brown from team activities, according to a UF spokesperson. Florida coach Urban Meyer is taking a required medical leave of absence to deal with stress. Florida's spring practice begins March 17.

Meyer has stated publicly during his time in Gainesville that one of his team's core values is respect for women. Other players, including former UF cornerback Jacques Rickerson of Jacksonville, have been kicked off the team for allegedly striking women. Brown's arrest for allegedly harming a woman is the second in a month involving a Florida football player. Cornerback Wondy Pierre-Louis was charged with domestic abuse in January.

A five-star recruit in 2009, Brown (6-4, 275 pounds) was expected to contend for a starting position during spring practice. His status with the team now is uncertain.

So apparently if you play for the Gators, if you hit women you can get released from jail on your own recognances?

WTF!

There still should have been some sort of punishment. Maybe some anger management classes or even some probation. TWO counts of battery against a woman whether it's misdemeanor or felony should carry some sort of punishment imo.

I'm no lawyer, but getting released on your own recognizance doesn't mean that he is not getting any punishment. It means that he does not have to post bail in order to be let out of his jail. "Own recognizance" means he will promise to appear in court when summoned. This is smart in this case, because where is the kid going to hide? He's a UF football player, of course he will have to show up.

This definitely doesn't excuse his behavior, but let's not be a Tom Smykowski here ("Office Space" inventor of 'Jump to Conclusions' mat).

BearGB, thanks for the explanation, I wasn't aware that he was still being charged. I thought that released on own recognizance meant there would be no punishment.

Don't worry, FL fans will spin this as it not being Liar's fault b/c he is on leave of absence. (Remember, he rationalized the several arrests during his first few years at FL as not his fault b/c he didn;t recruit those players.) So, like always, Urban Liar will not be put to task on this, even though this was a player he recruited and it happened under his watch...
