WR - David Givens

He was a stud, but completely under-utilized. I liked Bobby Brown...he was nice in person too... But Givens, he had the goods, just never got to show it off.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm basing mine on actual results. No doubt, Givens was more talented, but Brown performed, mostly because he had more opportunities. Plus, I might put Givens in the 2000 decade.

That's fair...

I guess if you think was a better college WR than mknight, samardzija and stovall so far... with people like kamara and little on the way , that list will be very hard to make.

Only with your NFL glasses on. Givens was perhaps the best athlete in 10 or 15 years but he came to ND as a jack of all trades - master of none. He was the prime example of an outstanding athlete out athleting high school kids. When he arrived at ND he was no technique. He could catch and run but he couldn't read defenses, run routes, nor have the focus that he has today.

And his position coach was a guy named Meyer.

David worked hard to get where he is today. But Div 1 stud receiver. No way.

BTW, Mattison wanted him on defense but Davie said NO.

You are correct about how I am viewing him...it's definitely with 20/20 hindsight.

Givens is the perfect example of a player who was miscoached throughout his career.

There's no way that Kevin McDougal should be ahead of Mirer, or Powlus. He was only a starter for 1 year, and the same goes for Reggie Brooks. As much as I love the '92 team, that was really Reggie's only year with significant playing time. Autry Denson deserves to be first team. MAS also listed Rocket as part of the All 80's team, so that's why he's not on the list.

But McDougal's 1 year was a year where we "won" or should have won a national championship, so I'd move him ahead of Average Ron, but maybe not Rick.

Well there's no way I would put him above Rick, but then again I'm a little bias since I know him. Not very wll mind you, but well enough that he reconizes my face.

Look, I'm not penalizing guys for only playing one year as a starter, especially those who played in the early 90s when Lou Holtz and Vinny Cerrato had us loaded with talent. It was very rare for a guy to start more than 25 games for his career during that time at Notre Dame.

Kevin McDougal's one season at quarterback for Notre Dame was more positively affective than any one season Mirer or Powlus had. By your line of thinking Thurman Thomas would be ahead of Barry Sanders on the 1980s Oklahoma State team.

Same with Reggie Brooks. If he wasn't sharing carries/playing behind Mark Green, Ricky Watters, Raghib Ismail, Ron Culver, big brother Tony, Dorsey Levens, Jerome Bettis, Willie Clark, Ray Zellars, and Lee Becton he would have been near the top of Notre Dame's career rushing ranks. But as it was he got one year as a starter and rushed for about 1,300 yards at around 8 yards per carry. Autry was good but the pantry was a bit less filled while he was there.

I understand your point and I don't completely disagree, I'm just saying that record setting numbers should carry a little more weight than you're giving them. The '92 backfield is my all time favorite group of players and it was flat out loaded.

QB:
Rick Mirer
Kevin McDougal

RB:
Reggie Brooks
Lee Becton
Jeff Burris

FB:
Jerome Bettis
Dean Liddle (NCAA campion and at the time he was the record holder of the 200m)
Ray Zellers

A few things: Let me preface this by saying that Ron Powlus was the toughest and classiest ND athlete I've seen. He handled all the tribulations with extraordinary class and it's great to have him back in the program. That said, he was merely an adequate QB and I would rank not only Mirer and McDougal above him, but Jarious Jackson as well. It simply wasn't going to happen, but I believe the '97 team would have gotten an extra win or two with Jackson starting.

1992-The most talented ND team ever, IMO. Holtz knew that squad should have won the NC.

Forgot to choose a coach. Hmmmm...Holtz or Davie as coach of the nineties....
