If he leaves, what job he takes will influence my reaction. If he is taking an NFL DC job, then it could reflect well on the program that both our coordinators left for coordinating positions at the top of the sport. Its a good selling point for other up and coming coaches we are looking to get.

However, if he leaves for a position coach job, then it makes it seem like something is wrong with the program under Freeman. After one year he would be losing a coordinator that has been at his alma mater for years and having someone take a demotion to move on after only one year here.

I wonder if Mickens is due to be elevated. Could make him DC and bring a LB coach in. Maybe the guy who was a GA and went to Vandy. Or Jim Leonard

Who? We can upgrade from Golden. He was pretty average in results so far, both on the field and in recruiting.
SO was Tommy, but a lot of people are pearl clutching at his loss. The defense was pretty good this year. I believe Golden is a much bigger loss than Tommy.

FWIW I don't think a Rees move and a Golden move would be all that related.
I doubt Rees is leaving because of anything internal at Notre Dame, but rather for the chance to keep growing. Golden going back to being LB coach at the Bengals would be weird, though if it's for a DC job in the NFL, I guess I get it. Was probably always his plan.
Either way, both are replaceable. The challenge is the timing. We're late in the college hiring cycle, and spring ball isn't really that far off.

No one's leaving the program if Golden leaves. People are clutching pearls about Rees b/c they worry Hartman and maybe Carr will follow.

The defense was not "pretty good." It was actually average in all respects, but they were ranked something like 120th in red zone defense.

Al Golden is not a guy who can coordinate a playoff contender, which is where ND wants to be. Full stop.

How do you know no one will enter the portal on the defense? Carr and Hartman are likely fine... we need to just hire a great OC.

I feel bad for Freeman. One had it looks good one hand it looks bad. I though we were going to have a good off season and not a shit show. UGH This is a bummer of a way to end the week.

What was Tommy's rank compared to the bad Golden? If Golden is bad what does that say about Tommy?

The guys recruited did not come to play for Al Golden. They came to play for MF.

If guys enter the portal, it'll be for playing time, not because Al Golden is no longer coaching them.
Glad you know all the players feelings! I feel much better

Maybe we lose someone to the portal, sure, could happen. But it won't be because of Golden leaving. He didn't recruit anyone who matters; even the young LBs are all Freeman guys. And it certainly won't be anyone as important as our starting quarterback.

I don't know if Hartman would bolt. I kind of doubt it, personally, assuming we hire a good OC. But it'd be much bigger collateral damage than anything that might follow from Golden departing.

Name a guy who came to ND because Al Golden, who has been here less than a year, is the DC.

This would not be a loss for the program whatsoever. Al Golden is not a coordinator that moves the needle much, if at all.

I have personally left companies because of disorder at the top and due to the fact relationships were broken. While you can say no one will leave because of Golden, you have no clue what an individual will process this. Did they develop a bond or like the teaching style of Golden. I also do not know, but you cannot either.. Golden defense was ranked pretty good, not great, but it caused less stress than the offense.

Jim Leonhard is literally just sitting out there waiting to get called. Just tell Golden to go and take the homerun upgrade.

Leonhard doesn’t recruit hard either, just in case people are expecting that.

Looking at their stats last year he looks pretty good. Do not know much about him though.

What about Freeman grooming someone internal like Mickens to be DC for a year. Then just find a DL or LB coach depending on the fit for Washington.
