Action movie bracket madness

No Terminator or Terminator 2? This field of movies blows.

More sci-fi than action, but it's close. The whole story line of Terminator is sci-fi with action elements, kind of like Star Wars uses a lot of Western & Samurai film influences but ultimately is sci-fi. The same with the Matrix, which is even further into sci-fi territory considering the main hero & the main villain aren't even human. Yes, I'm being a genre nit here but that's what those classifications are there for. A movie ultimately falls into one or the other. It's a judgement call on my part.

Ya'll are giving the man too hard of a time. I like the idea. Thanks for starting it up.

If you are taking additions (doesn't seem like it), I'd like to see some Bruce Lee in there... Enter the Dragon should do it.

I appreciate the thumbs up. Enter the Dragon just missed the cut.

I cleared it with Chuck...he said that if you:

1) acknowledge the fact that "Invasion USA" can't be in the tournament due to it being unfair to every other film...

and

2) you also agree that the trailer is also the greatest film trailer of all time for any genre...

that he will spare you and allow this tournament to continue.

He also ordered me to post the trailer to this thread...and you don't defy God...I mean Tebow...I mean Chuck Norris...when he gives you an order.

Enjoy!

I'll go one better. "Invasion USA" didn't make the list because it isn't an action movie. It's a documentary about how Chuck single-handedly saved America. Needless to say, it's the greatest documentary ever made.

"Lone Wolf McQuade" is Chuck's best film.

And I'm also secure enough to admit that it's more of a "guilty pleasure, stop-and-watch-it-whenever-I'm-flipping-through kinda flick."

I like the idea of a guilty pleasure bracket as well, Black Irish. A movie can be an action flick and a guilty pleasure...but a guilty pleasure is not necessarily an action flick.

Here are some nominees for those flicks you can't help but stop and watch whenever it's on USA or TNT or whatever basic cable or local station (edited versions even be damned): (And sorry BI, I don't mean to hijack your thread-- I know you mentioned a bracket for this in addition to the Action Movie. We can all move onto this genre after the action tournament ends with a natty champ)

-Bloodsport (really any of The Mussels from Brussels first few flicks)
-Deliverance
-Cyborg
-Eddie and the Cruisers
-Die Hard (any of 'em, but especially the first)
-Shawshank Redemption
-Predator
-Red Dawn
-5th Element
-Saving Private Ryan (not to be confused with Johnnykillz personal all time favorite flick-- Shaving Ryan's Privates)
-Good Will Hunting
-Godfather I and II
-Tombstone (and maybe even Costner's Wyatt Earp)
-Broken Arrow
-Caddyshack
-Lord of the Rings movies
-Road House
-Next of Kin
-Pretty much anything with Busey in it or Ice-T in it
-Mr. Mom
-Twins
-Twister
-Blazing Saddles
-Spaceballs
-Plains, Trains, and Automobiles
-Son-in-Law
-Teen Wolf
-Lonesome Dove
-Can't Buy Me Love
-The Burbs
-Vacation, European Vacation, and Christmas Vacation
-A Christmas Story
-The Outsiders
-Cliffhanger
-Judge Dredd
-O Brother Where Art Thou
-The Goonies
-Major League
-Legion (I know this is a stretch because it's so recent, but I've caught myself watching it a few times already on Showtime or Starz)
-Top Gun
-My Cousin Vinny

And I'll stop right now-- I gotta get to bed!

I like the idea, considering you said it was subjective and your personal opinion, I really can not give you a hard time. On that note I will have to make a vote later because I am suppose to be watching a movie with my wife. It is called Gigantic with John Goodman, Zooey Deshanel (sp), and Zach Galifinakis. Never heard of it but kind of funny none the less.

Just thought I would throw that out there. I also have a polygraph test tomorrow for a job. Should be fun wippee.

Stupid city of Houston.

Kidding, of course. But that is the humor of the movie. The brilliant, brilliant movie.

I think, when you narrow it down to sixty-four, you should seed them in order of how much they grossed. It's really stupid to have any "madness" knock-off if you're just numbering them in order how how good they are. You need a separate way to do it and the receipts are perfect.

The chase scene of Frank Dukes across the little boats is the greatest moment in movie history.

Almost perfect. I would like to second this entire vote with 1 exception. I think Demolition Man beats Casino Royale so 20 over 13, everything else I would have voted for.

Very subjective list and I am sure that EVERYONE would come up with a different set of 32 just based on their view of action films. I personally think Avatar, Ironman 1/2, and Matrix are some of the best action movies I've ever seen, but I can see why some wouldn't classify them as pure action movies.

BTW, Sidekicks was surely the best Chuck Norris movie ever made.

My votes:
14
25 (although this is more of a Final Four type of matchup. Total Recall is pretty damn sweet-- "Two weeks, two weeks," "Makes me wish I had a 3rd hand," "You think this is the real Quaid? Haha. It is.")
22 (but again, a TOUGH decision)
21 (mainly because I don't classify the Bond films (particularly the old ones) as "action" movies)
7 (haven't seen the last Rambo)
5 (haven't seen Supercop)
10
12 (this is assuming it's the Ice-T, Ice Cube, Bill paxton one...and not the Nicolas Cage one. If so, then I vote 18 instead)
32 (never really thought of 48 Hours as an "action" movie)
6
1
24 (Gotta have SOME Segal in here)
2
20 (I liked Casino Royale a lot and was kind of a new era in Bond films, but it's still hard for me to get past the Bond franchise as "action" movies stereotype)

irishhog77: Interesting how you don't consider Bond films to be action movies. When I had to define the action genre in college, I pegged the Bond franchise as the true beginning of the genre. It has all of the elements, to some degree, of what are the broad defining features of the action genre. And, yes, the "Trespass" I'm referring to is the 1992 version with Bill Paxton and Ice-T.

I don't consider them "action" movies in the same sense as I consider Predator, Die Hard, etc. action movies. The original ones are 40-50 years old, rated PG, contain bad acting (but not in the way, say Schwarzenegger, made almost it's own art form), are more about looks and style (the tuxedos, bedding multiple pin up girls, hairy chests, exotic locales, fancy hotels, elegant dinners and drinks, etc.), contain no profanity, contain no gore or graphic violence, and were often times more about BS factors like, "Who's going to be the next Bond girl," or "Who's going to sing the theme song for the next Bond movie." Don't get me wrong, I like Bond movies, but they fit into an entirely different category for me than Predator and Die Hard fit.

On a side note, I liked Casino Royale with Daniel Craig a lot. I thought it gave a more real, darker portrayal of James Bond-- that he wasn't just a cheesy Roger Moore, bangin' Grace Jones and every other broad that walked onto the screen and fitting in cliched one-liners whenever he had the chance.

Sure the old Bond movies can be rather creaky and dated (can be cool though), but the basic action movie building blocks are there: story structure, narrative pace, wry one-liners, elaborate action sequences, the mano-a-mano showdown that involved progressively more elaborate deaths. Miles Davis was sweet & smooth while Charlie Parker was driving & frenetic, but they're both still be-bop jazz.

Wow, interesting to see Die Hard in this round. It's the defending champion from when I ran this contest on another forum last March. Upset in the making?

32 -tough one, but I believe Bourne is the superior film just off the apartment fight scene alone.

Can't believe Predator beat Die Hard and Die Hard w/Vengeance beat True Lies

IMO Point Break would beat any of these.
