Gamble came to Notre Dame after my junior year. Unfortunately for him, Joe Kuharich was the coach (and mightily failing) and pinned his future to the "elephant backfield" that he bragged about in recruiting. This group of newcomers was to feature Jim Snowden (NFL offensive tackle) at fullback, some huge NFL Tight End whose name slips my mind just now (Paul Costa?) at halfback, a guy named Rutkowski at the other halfback, and Frank Budka at quarterback. It probably didn't take Gamble long to figure out that he wasn't playing over Daryle Lamonica (the current QB), nor Budka ... so he wisely left.
Soon Kuharich realized that elephants belong on the line-of-scrimmage and got fired and a new coach from Northwestern was brought in ... who WAS that new guy anyway?
