If OSU is too far away, the only way we land this kid is to get him and his parents on campus and let MF put on the full Glengarry Glenn Ross.

The FitnessGram™ Pacer Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. The 20 meter pacer test will begin in 30 seconds. Line up at the start. The running speed starts slowly, but gets faster each minute after you hear this signal. [beep] A single lap should be completed each time you hear this sound. [ding] Remember to run in a straight line, and run as long as possible. The second time you fail to complete a lap before the sound, your test is over. The test will begin on the word start. On your mark, get ready, start.

Nobody will be willing/able to compete with the two flagship Texas schools in a pay for play system. They are in the sweet spot of football crazy, wealthy, regional popularity, and having massive numbers of alums.
I disagree. There is megawealth in Southern California. If Dre and George Lucas, for example, get excited about USC football the Texans will have me their match. How about a Space Jam III movie featuring three incoming USC freshmen in (lucrative) cameo roles.

And USC fans often have a bleep you attitude. The biggest building in USC's residential village is the Cowlings and Ilium building.

Some Trojan alum had enough petty cash and attitude to build a big building named after OJ's chauffeur

While many of the biggest warchest are in Northern california, So Cal can hang with Texas, and leverage

Wealth is part of the equation but a willingness to spend a not-inconsequential part of that wealth on a football team is the other part. Texas has that much more than Southern California. It's substantially more likely a no-name millionaire in Texas whose whole life is Texas football is going to shell out big bucks for a recruit than that Dr. Dre (who has more money but also much less passion) would.

People always said SMU had the pony express years because SMU grads in Dallas and Houston wanted to have bragging rights around the water cooler at work. I live in LA and work in an office with lots of USC grads. Almost none of them care about football, and none of them care passionately enough to invest their own money into it.

Exactly!!!!! And take it a step further… being an A&M or Alabama grad (say, Kentucky in hoops) that spends big on the team in those states literally gets you a reputation and business connections. It’s like joining a country club and paying for everyone’s drinks.

It’s cool if an ND alum does it, but it doesn’t buy you clout if you live in, say, Washington DC.

I think getting Austin would be a great recovery from the loss of the Great Dante Moore. I do hope the flip could come quickly to help with Hanefin.
