No Holds Are Barred When It Comes To The Duke-UNC Rivalry, Including Brutal Lacrosse Nutshots

For anyone that missed it last night... this nut shot was actually a game changing play. It was a very close game at this point and this slash basically cost UNC their best creator for the rest of the game.

Duke went on to win 11-8. Their defense has tightened up considerably since the Maryland game. UNC played a ton of zone and it burned them in the first half... in the second Duke only scored 2 legit goals versus 8 in the first half.

Expect Denver to run a ton of zone against ND. Winning faceoffs, scoring in transition, and accurate shooting will be crucial. If Chase Carraro plays for Denver we likely lose this game... maybe by 3-4 goals. Game is being played in the Denver Broncos stadium and 10k+ fans are expected.

EDIT: Carraro appears to still be out which is huge. Denver might have one of their frosh offensive stars back though.

Really solid showing by Michigan against Fairfield. Lost by 2 but had it at a one goal margin midway into the fourth and had chances to tie. Big step forward only giving up 10 against a good team despite getting killed on possessions (again).

Gerald Logan continues to be a huge difference maker. 17 saves, 10 GA is a great stat line. Michigan really needs better takeaway defenders to cause turnovers... or a more conservative system (my choice) to play to his strengths.

Seton Hall's women's lax team just got into a bus accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike... 2 fatalities confirmed already.... multiple people had to be airlifted out...

In lighter news, Hopkins vs. Syracuse about to get underway on ESPNU at 1.

Ohio State takes down Virginia 11-10.

ND vs. Denver facing off now on ESPN3. Denver released a false injury report saying Carraro would be out....... and now he is starting. What a load of bull. Very small chance of winning this game now as he'll likely control faceoffs.

Tied up at 3-3 after 1Q. ND honestly not playing bad... especially on offense against Denver's zone... but not doing a good enough job picking up GBs when we get the ball on the turf and clearing. Really soft/muddy turf at the Broncos' stadium making it tough.

EDIT: Denver leads 6-4 at halftime.... scores with less than a second left before half. ND honestly outplaying them... inaccurate shooting and a couple mental errors and instead of being up 7-4 we're down 6-4. Hit three pipes already and have a bunch of other good looks not find the back of the net. No luck of the Irish today it seems.

Some really horrendous officiating in favor of Denver this evening. I just don't understand some of these calls. They are a total joke. Even the announcers calling out the refs on it. Ends up leading to a Denver goal and they lead 9-8 heading into 4Q.

ND beats #3 Denver 13-12 in OT!!!

Replay on ESPNU tonight if you want to tune in and watch the drama. ND scores two goals in the last 1:30 to tie it up and then wins it on a goal from Marlatt on the first possession of OT. Huge.

Thanks for posting. Wasn't able to post on here because I've been traveling on my annual lacrosse roadtrip. Was at the game in CT. It was a valiant effort and by far the most progress I've seen so far. That team was ranked last week.

Michigan has had 2 straight ECAC Rookie of Week recipients (GK Logan and A Kyle Jackson). The Michigan fans at the game outnumbered the Fairfield fans, so that may have had something to do with it. Lot of alums out on the east coast.

I'm typing this from the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, anticipating tomorrow's game against colgate at Citi Field over in Flushing. Really cool trip and experience for the kids. Michigan's second stadium neutral site game of the season thanks to Mets owner Fred Wilpon. The game will be live at 3pm tomorrow on ESPNU.

ECAC Scores-

bellarmine knocked off Mercer 12-5
#10 Loyola beat Air Force in the front of the Denver Faceoff Classic at Mile High
#12 ohio upset #11 virginia (!!) in VA.
And as covered above, ND beat DU in a 13-12 OT thriller.

Seems like the buckeyes are a legitimate team this year.

I seriously have no idea how, but they are pretty darn consistent on both sides of the ball. They have a B+ offense and B+ defense that when added together has them competing with every team in the country.

Ohio State, like so many other teams (UNC, Denver, UVA, Hopkins, etc.), has been playing a ton of zone defense... and it has been rather effective. They don't play strictly zone and mix in man-to-man a lot... but it seems to be an effective philosophy in keeping games tight where they can manufacture goals at key moments. They went zone in the second half of the game against Penn State and it worked wonders. They used a lot of zone against Virginia today. And they used zone against Denver in their one goal loss. In today's win against UVA, they got two goals at the end of periods and one off a deflected pass that ricocheted in. We'll see if their luck can keep up but they're definitely a scrappy, athletic team that can match up with anyone physically if their goal keeping and shooting is up to snuff.

I just got a chance to look at the box score from ND/Denver... and it was utter domination. Three ridiculous "home town" calls at very crucial moments (all by the same ref, mind you) combined with poor first half shooting accuracy from ND and that Kemp had the worst statistical game of his career is what kept it from being a blow out by ND. ND outshot Denver 44 to 28, out groundballed Denver 27 to 18, dominated faceoffs 17 to 11, forced Denver into 14 turnovers versus 9 for ND, and forced Denver into 4 "timer on" stall situations without once getting put in that situation.

But ND got flagged 6 times (it should be noted that prior to this game ND was best in the country at NOT committing penalties and only got flagged about 2 times a game) including a cross-check call that the announcers ranted on for awhile as being totally ridiculous (it was truly one of the worst calls I've ever seen in a very long time of playing/watching lacrosse), and two slashing calls that were hilarious... one from Stephen O'Hara where he didn't touch the guy and the attacker didn't react at all to the "slash"; and the other from Matt Kavanagh where he took a normal swing and actually hit the ball carrier's stick. Maybe this one ref was a Michigan fan? Or just a Denver native? Who knows... no way to slice it except to say that they were very fishy calls at crucial points of the game.

On top of that, mental lapses in 3 of the 4 timer-on situations lead to goals when there is really no excuse to give up a goal when the attacking team has less than 30 seconds to manufacture offense. The worst was when the Denver player had ~10 seconds to score and was behind the goal... and rather than just forcing him to make a move with time running out on the shot clock our defender tried to chase him behind the goal and he just walked around the other side uncontested and scored. That's going to be one ugly moment in film session...

But after all of that... 3 gift goals in shot clock situations, outrageous penalties, some other gifts at the end of the periods... we came out with a road win over a top 5 time. Insane. If we get through Ohio State (and assuming we run the table on the non-Syracuse Big East teams) we should be locked in to a top seed. Either way, this win all but locked up a tournament birth assuming we take care of business against inferior competition.

Snow day today and I finally got to watch this game! GREAT victory for the Irish. They really did dominate this game. I too was amazed at some of the calls made in this game, as Denver definitely had some phantom calls. Either way, ND is just confident at the end of games. They believe they are going to win and the confidence shows! I liked the spread attack Denver had but ND was just too much! Totally pumped right now! Bring on OSU!

Thanks LAX. Hopefully it is streamed as we are 100 % addicted.
All of these close wins have to be good for ND come tournament time...
This team is getting the Eye of the Tiger look more and more each week.

Hofstra goes down to St. John's. Shocking. Cornell leads Bucknell by 1 at halftime. This game has HUGE playoff implications.

Those are two big upsets. Good to see Cornell go down!
What's your take today LAX? I don't know anything about OSU other than they gave ND a tough game last year. I can see ND playing a great, fundamentally sound game today from start to finish and taking them down by a couple.

LAX, any idea if this game is being played inside today? I just saw on UND that it will not be broadcasted if the game is being played indoors. Looking at the weather, it doesn't look too promising for them to be out? If anyone finds out where this is being played, let me know. Thanks.

Games against OSU are always really physical and chippy and very close. I could definitely see us losing with the short turn around from Denver BUT Ohio State is also on a short turn around from an away game at UVA. So that's pretty much a wash.

The game is being played indoors now at Loftus (which may mean no webcast... apparently it's snowing today) which is good because a game in crappy conditions was only going to increase the "luck" factor in play. Ohio State has a good defense and goalie and a solid offense but I'd be very surprised if they got north of 8 goals against us. If they do, some crappy shots went in or we made some stupid errors. The key to the game will be how we attack their zone defense. We were very effective in attack Denver's zone (especially when we started running hybrid midfield lines in the second half) but Ohio State will watch the tape on that and the same plays probably won't work. Ohio State is also likely to be more aggressive in their zone and won't allow us to take as many uncontested 12 yard shots. They will also mix in a substantial amount of man-to-man which will hurt the effectiveness of the hybrid lines we used. Here is how effective Ohio State's zone has been the last couple weeks:

1. Held Penn State to 1 second half goal after they switched to it at halftime when they were down 8-2.
2. Held Denver (probably the single best zone busting personnel in the country) to 10 goals which is well below their average output.
3. Held UVA to 10 goals (but in all fairness UVA outplayed them in that game and was able to work themselves into very good looks).

So we're probably going to need to get to 9-10 goals to win this game unless our defense comes out with a vintage performance against their improved offense which comes in averaging about 12 a game. We've won 10 straight against Ohio State but the last three have been very close games. I think we probably grind out another W, but it should be another close game that can go either way. This is the last game of our gauntlet (which was so difficult that we have the #1 RPI by a BIG margin despite having a loss while Maryland is undefeated) and if we win it'll go a long way towards locking up a top seed for May.

Thanks LAX. I think OSU will be the one who struggles with the quick turnaround, especially with them being on the road in the middle of the week.
That sucks that it won't be broadcasted now. I guess that means Gametracker...I hate Gametracker...I guess it's better than nothing though.

These midweek games are always a headache. Short turnaround with limited preparation for your opponent. Oddly, with the 2 upsets yesterday I'm not that shocked by either one. Bucknell is tough and puts a lot of pressure on you with that 10 man ride and pressure defense. I figured this would be a tough game but honestly thought Cornell had the experience and talent to deal with them. Looking ahead to UPENN perhaps?
SJU is another team with talent but thought Hofstra had the defense to stop them. Local rivalry I guess. Dutch jumped out but didn't maintain the pressure. Nice win by the Johnnies.

Today should be a great game. Lax has great insight into match ups. Ball movement, motion, confuse the defense with that motion and create open looks. Don't get baited into the low percentage shots the zone looks to give you. Looks to be another tight one, but like irishrb said, these contests help get you battle tested for the tournament. And what happened to lacrosse being a spring sport? Seems like you go from snow to a 90 degree Memorial Day weekend nowadays! Enjoy brothers!

Had planned on picking up my daughter early from daycare and going to the game, watching the first half with her until my wife picks her up after work, and then watching the 2nd half by myself. But my daughter has a rare food allergy and it bit her again last night (and it hits her HARD, vomitting all night and diarreah all day), which means she's at the in-laws and I'll probably pick her up and take her home for more rest.

Anybody able to give updates, that would be greatly appreciated.

ND has grabbed a 6-1 lead halfway through the 2nd quarter. Seems like total domination right now. Too bad no live broadcast. OSU timeout to try to stem the tide.... wouldn't be surprised to see them completely change their defense.
