Didn't ND play today? What was the score/when was it?

It's on ESPNU right now. We're getting our butts kicked 4-1 in the first quarter. Villanova is playing the same defense Penn State did where they slide early and extend 1v1... and it's owning us. We also lost a bunch of faceoffs in a row early and Villanova built a 3-0 lead before we even took our first shot.

Lastly... Villanova had an errant pass bounce off someone's helmet and go in the goal. Not our day. I'll be very shocked if we come back against them.

4-2 Villanova at halftime. Our defense has really tightened up... no 2nd quarter goals for Villanova. We're starting to win more faceoffs which is huge... but right now, our shooting accuracy is abysmal. Need to see if we can find the back of the net in the second half.

6 straight goals for ND to take a 6-4 lead. Timeout Villanova.

ND up 6-4 heading into the 4th.... Villanova's D has tightened up again and is doing a good job of extending and we're turning it over too easily. Kemp really seeing the ball well in goal now.

Should be an exciting finish.

Make it 8-4. 8 straight goals and Villanova hasn't scored in ~45 minutes.

UMASS squeaks by Hofstra 14-13.... ND #3 now in RPI and .001 points out of the #2 spot currently occupied by Duke. If teams were seeded today, we'd likely be the #2 or #3 seed.

Michigan scores to tie it up 8-8 early in the 4th......

Rutgers misses another easy one right in front of the cage....

and Rutgers nails an 18 yard shot to go up 9-8. Gotta save that!

annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd defensive collapse to end the game. Rutgers up 13-9 with 3 to play. Bummer.

A great showing by Michigan. My heart was beating fast for awhile there because they looked like they were gonna pull it off.

Gotta improve the defense, but help is on the way.

Season finale for Michigan is in two weeks- May 5th at north carolina who is playing for the ACC tournament title tomorrow. Oy.

I think your guys on defense just got tired there at the end of the game. You can't go like ~20% on faceoffs and play that much defense back to back. Bummer because it really looked they were going to pull it off.

ND #2 in RPI now. If Duke beats UNC they'll probably drop down to #3. The Wagner vs. Bryant game should have minimal impact on RPIs.

Expect Notre Dame somewhere in the #2 to #4 range in the new polls on Monday.

ND clinched #1 seed and Big East regular season championship with the win @ Villanova. At worst, with a loss to Syracuse, we could tie with Villanova for the championship and we hold the tiebreaker over the Wildcats.

ND will play #4 seed St. John's in the first round of the Big East tournament and then the winner of Syracuse vs. Villanova. ND handled St. John's 13-6 in the Big City Classic earlier this month.

How important is seeding in the Ncaa Tournament? We've already guaranteed a spot, how much do we care about the 2 seed versus the 1 seed?

Wow so the dookies win it. Michigan will have a tough, tough test. A pissed off team who got beat by their rival for the conference tournament title.

Also shoutout to the Michigan Women's club on winning their 2nd straight conference tournament title, including an upset over the #1 ranked buckeyes in the semis this morning. The Women's program will begin NCAA competition in the 2013-14 academic year.

You'll be very lucky to keep UNC under 20. Or win a single faceoff.

With Duke's win, ND moves back down to #3 in the RPI. If seeding happened today, ND would likely be seeded between #1 and #3 with Loyola and Duke. Loyola will have a chance to lock down the #1 seed with a win over Hopkins next week.

Is the game on the 28th on ESPNU? If so I'll probably go to the game. If not, I'll... still probably go to the game.

Very nice (also voted). If someone wanted to record part of say the Duke game and try and figure out what was happening on offense/defense, would they just condense the offensive and defensive possessions? Would that paint a (fairly) complete picture of the game? and how much of the game is "important" to have have? 30 minutes? Like In football, seeing the offense and defense cut ups is the most important thing, and thats ~30 minutes.

I've actually got the Duke game on my computer (grabbed it off ESPN3.com) but it is very low quality. I'll see if I can get one of the other games off my DVR... maybe Denver or Villanova... and do some cut ups that way. Won't happen until next week though.

Can you give a preview of Syracuse? (Like Denver was all offense and that motion offense thing, and a weak defense) etc?

Can you give a preview of Syracuse? (Like Denver was all offense and that motion offense thing, and a weak defense) etc?

Certainly. I actually know three kids on the Syracuse team (family friend and the other two played with my little brother in high school) and on top of that have watched a number of their games this year.

Basically, Syracuse is plagued by the two greatest fatal flaws in lacrosse + a number of other minor issues. Those fatal flaws are poor goaltending and poor faceoffs. They are getting killed at the faceoff X this year. Just absolutely owned by about every team they play. The funniest part? They passed on a faceoff specialist in their last recruiting class... I know because another family friend was being recruited to be "their guy" but they opted to take another position player. Horrible faceoffs almost single handedly cost them a game against 3-9 Hobart.... that's how bad it is.

Their goaltending situation is only marginally better. They're replacing a multiple All-American this year (John Galloway) and are simply failing to do it. They've tried 3 different goalies this year and none of them have played well. Right now they're starting a true frosh who was a #1 recruit at his position but has been shaky at best so far in his career. Still, he's capable of getting hot because he has that kind of talent.

More than anything, it is the above flaws that are killing their defense. They're forcing their defense to play too many possessions and letting in too many bad shots. But they're also not playing great man-to-man... their zone defense is pretty good when they run it... but they're rarely in a situation to use it. If they can get a lead and go to a zone against us, we might be in trouble... but that's unlikely. They also replaced some really talented individual defenders (Joel White and John Lade) and the lack of great individual cover guys/their leadership and experience has hurt them.

Their offense is struggling because they lack stars. Syracuse is a team that has always had star players who are initiators and playmakers with the ball in their stick. Even if they aren't scoring, they're creating offense. Think Steve Nash... you let him shoot, and he's deadly accurate... you make him pass, he gets assists or creates scoring opportunities for his teammates.

This Syracuse team doesn't have a Steve Nash. They have some very talented finishers, especially the coaches son Tim Desko. ND's #1 concern will be keeping him from catching the ball in a position to shoot. Syracuse's best dodger is probably Tommy Palasek... and he's very average. None of their middies wow you. Derek Maltz is a player attack who can really shoot the ball, but also isn't a creator. The biggest challenge for ND will be not giving up shots they usually assume Kemp will save... because Syracuse will make us pay. Here is some of Desko's handiwork:

<object width="640" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zOEeTpCM8_s?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zOEeTpCM8_s?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

<object width="480" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JkaoEsZ0aNs?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JkaoEsZ0aNs?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

So basically, they're going to try to have Palasek or one of their middies initiate... and then either jam the ball inside to Desko or set up Maltz for outside shots. They don't run anything fancy. They're not creative. They're a very straight forward team that tries to pass the ball into scoring positions. As long as Kemp doesn't have an off day and we win 1v1 matchups on defense, we'll be able to shut them down... but that sounds easier said than done. While this is the same team that just lost 10-8 to Georgetown, they also scored 19 goals on Rutgers the week before.

All I will say is that this is how you build a winning team in any sport. It has nothing to do with "swag" and it has everything to do with hard work, focus, selflessness, and poise. Hopefully Coach Kelly is the guy to get our football team to play with that attitude and not with a sense of entitlement we've seen prevalent in previous years.
