Look at his list... He's got Ivy League and PAC 12 offers. You REEEALLY have to want to go to ND if you pass on all of that. If so, you walk onto campus a Notre Dame Man.

As long as he's not our starting center 4 years from now because our 4-star stud can't grasp the playbook.

Well it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if he actually is, you know, good.

Any alumni have an idear to what type of academic aid the school provides? I am quite unfamiliar with the protocol for ND's admissions and financial aid packages available to non-scholarship students and student athletes. Just seems crazy that one would even ponder this with other offers on the table, but I know there are several players who have done this.

not sure a walk-on has ever come to ND turning down Pac12 offers. Schmidt's offers were Air Force and Cincy..

I have to say, while I was never in position to be recruited, I would have strongly considered walking on at Notre Dame and turning down offers from other schools. I would do this because of how much I am a fan of the university, not just the football team. Kid could have those same feelings.

Gutwald Walking Towards Decision - Irish Sports Daily

It would be safe to say Gutwald enjoyed his trip to South Bend and gave him a lot to think about as he will choose to walk-on at Notre Dame or Stanford. However, Sanford was not done and if Gutwald chooses the Irish it would be due in a large part to the offensive coordinators persistence and a somewhat surprise visit to Dublin High School on Tuesday.
“He messaged me really late last night telling me he was going to stop to see me on Tuesday,” Gutwald stated. “It was a nice surprise when I woke up to on Tuesday morning. It makes you feel good. He is an awesome guy and have so much contact with him.”

The fact that BK spent half an hour with Gutwald during this crazy part of recruiting season has to tell you something about how ND feels about him

Like crusader said up top - he must really want to play football to pass up Ivy League offers for a PWO status at ND.

I'd jump on the Ivy League offers in a heartbeat.

Ivy league doesn't give you scholarships FYI, so he's footing the bill wherever he goes. So I think that evens the playing field a bit.

They have ways of getting around that.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/23/s...-game-as-sports-teams-in-ivies-rise.html?_r=0

The Ivy League does not award athletic scholarships, but led by endowment-rich members like Harvard, Yale and Princeton, the conference has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in additional need-based aid — with most of the universities all but eliminating student loans and essentially doubling the size of grants meant for middle-income families.

The financial-aid enhancements have had a profound effect on the quality of athletic recruits. Rosters are now fortified with top athletes who would have turned down the Ivy League in the past because they would have been asked to pay $20,000 to $30,000 per year more than at other colleges.

“We’re seeing a significant change in the caliber of the student-athlete,” said Steve Bilsky, the University of Pennsylvania’s athletic director, one of more than 50 Ivy League administrators and coaches interviewed. “It’s not even the same population because the pool has widened. We see a considerable number of student-athletes turning down athletic scholarships from places like Stanford, Northwestern or Duke to come to Penn.”

Andy Noel, Cornell’s athletic director, said: “Eighty percent of our best recruits in the current freshman class would not have come here 10 years ago because we couldn’t match other schools’ offers. The impact has been enormous. And will continue to be.”

The "no scholarship" Ivy League model has always been grossly overstated and now a days it's basically a myth. In the mid 80's, I could have gone to Princeton for an estimated $25k as an athlete. That was for all 4 years. Cornell was closer to $20k. I don't remember what Penn was. What made the "need based scholarship" model laughable was my father made over $100k at that time. The coach used the pitch, "pay for one, get 3 free." to my father on our in home visit.

It sounds like they are even more aggressive with "need based" scholarships today.

His actually has a lot of traditional full ride offers: Oregon, Arizona, Oregon St, Wash St, and San Jose St.

Something that Gutwald said seems odd to me.

He laid out the whole situation for me and he thinks I am a really good player and I could earn a scholarship pretty fast. He thought Notre Dame would be a great place for me.

How is recruiting Gutwald as a '16 PWO then giving him a scholarship "pretty fast" better than waiting until '17 and signing the #7 OG in Matt Bockhorst ,who would commit instantly if he was offered? It's not like ND has a shortage of guards at the moment.

Has anyone else watched both films and have an opinion?

Depends on what everyone's understanding of "could" is. Hopefully we have learned from Michigan's mistakes and are communicating clearly with our recruits.

As it pertains to Gutwald, I would assume that they see lots of upside that, if developed, could lead to a very good player and thus the possibility of earning a scholarship "pretty fast".

Hopefully Gutwald doesn't feel that a scholarship has been basically promised.

The differences

1. We may have one or two spots open and we always want to use all our spots
2. This kid would be 1 year ahead in weight training and playbook experience
3. If he doesn't earn a scholarship you're no worse off, so why not add him in case he's good?
4. Even though we have three very good gets this year, you never know what can happen and you don't want to have a "gap" year without any depth.
5. There's no reason you can't get both since spots always seem to open up.

1. He doesn't fill a spot. If he stays a PWO like Bush or Kilander, then I guess he has a spot on the 105 roster.
2. True, but he would need it to catch up with where Bockhorst is and he's MB's a year younger.
3. True
4. ND is evenly stocked with OG's and the OG's that do play come in as high 4 star OT's.
5. Many people have said ND has parted ways with Bockhorst.
