Several players who sent in paperwork said they had no intention of leaving, looking at the exercise more as a curiosity.

"I'm not even thinking about going to do that next year," said quarterback Todd Boeckman, 23, a fourth-year junior. "It's just nice to see where you stand."

Junior running back Maurice Wells would not comment on whether he was one of the 13, but it sounded like he was when he said, "I'm almost positive I'll be here next year.

We are only a couple years from this problem creeping in at ND again. Remember back in the Lou days, we had our fair share of early departures. You can afford to lose a few if you have an established recruiting pipeline. ND is headed that way in a hurry.

I don't think losing players to transfer hurts too bad if they were number 3 on the depth chart. With our recruiting haul, it frees up players next year that actually could make a difference. But we'll see.
