Loved this kid as a recruit, but once again the line, "academic qualifications hampered his enrollment," followed by never quite got on track."

I hope the kids entering the recruiting process take note, because this kid had everything else.

Oh yeah. From a pure football standpoint, he was almost as good a defensive back prospect as you are going to see. Versatile and athletic. I loved his potential as a guy who could kind of do it all in the defensive backfield.

This is now my fourth full cycle following recruiting, and I have to admit, stuff like this is making me lose steam as a recruiting fan. I no longer have a premium sub. It's just frustrating, and heartbreaking for the kids, to invest so much in following their recruitments and then see so many careers derailed by conduct issues and academics ... if indeed that is what happened to Priest.

I would so much prefer if we could have something on these subpar academic cases of recruits upfront regarding hey ND would love to have but very marginal chance due to academics. I remember watching so much talk about our coaches chasing Priest when the fact is that he couldnt get into ND if he was dying to get there.

You have to assume ND has info on these guys academically. If you have a VERY long shot academically, why waste resources (or fans emotions) chasing these guys? Why put these guys as medium to high interest ND (or just notes that ND has offered) when they cant get in?

I cant help but think of the three that we have lost the past couple of years post signing day in that a lot of this could have been avoided if ND wasnt reaching so far to make the 5% chance happen.

Some places it is just not going to happen. Louisiana for example. Great athletes, terrible, terrible academic schools. Tillery went to a private school in Northern Louisiana. Most the talent in LA comes from the public sector where the boys will never pass ND academic standards. Dont get me wrong, I would love to have LSU's pipeline talent but coming from someone who has lived there, a lot of LSU players have very little right to be going to a center of higher education.

I know ND has to work to stay competitive on the field but at some point...
