Super six sophomores to keep an eye on

4. Kyle Long, defensive tackle, St. Anne's-Belfield. He's already bigger than 'big brother' Chris Long, who started as a sophomore defensive end for UVa. His development over the next two seasons will determine if he's as heavily recruited.

Kyle, the son of NFL legend Howie Long, is an intriguing defensive tackle prospect for the Class of 2008. I have word that Kyle visited Notre Dame this weekend. He also can play offensive tackle in college, but loves to play D.

Word is he also likes Notre Dame because he'd like to also play baseball in college. He is a phenominal pitcher in HS, too.

The Bucknuts are convinced that Howie loves Tressell and his kid is a lock for anOSU.

I have only played one year of football, so I am floored by the attention. Virginia and Ohio State have both verbally offered me scholarships and have said that they will extend the offer in writing when they can do so in the fall.
BTW, his brother Chris is currently playing at Virginia. Chris has also advised Kyle to stay away from football and focus on baseball.

We won the state title in baseball. There were scouts at most of our games. I am hearing from Texas, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Clemson in baseball.
Long who pitched his way to a 6-1 record and an ERA under 2.00. Long also hit .481 with 37 RBI and six home runs.

I have secondary confirmation on Long being on campus this weekend. This is definitely a good thing since this was an unscheduled visit with the staff. IMO, this shows genuine interest into the program.

...mention of Ohio State...uncontrollable anger and animosity...must have beer to calm down...

Ah, that's better. Crisis averted. Please don't spring you-know-who on me like that without warning. :)

After hearing Gary Gray's Power Hour last night, it sounds like when Kyle was on campus he had dinner with Gray and about 20 members of the team.

Nice.

At this kid's size, is he a pitcher or first baseman?

That's one hell of a big baseball player.

"I've always watched big-time college football," Kyle said. "Everywhere you go you see Ohio State. There's nothing better than getting up on Saturday and watching Ohio State against Texas or Ohio State playing in the Big House."
It looks like Long will be taking in the Ohio State-Penn State game and may also try to make it up to the Ohio State-Michigan game this year, too. It looks like the Buckeyes are the early leader for his services.

Long was offered by Ohio State, Kansas State and Virginia on Friday the 1st. I'm surprised Notre Dame didn't offer immediately.

With respect to the gridiron, St. Anne’s-Belfield aptly named Friday’s festivities a Fall Family Picnic. Behind three touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Howie Long, the Saints crushed visiting North Cross 42-0 - and it wasn’t even that close.

With his namesake looking on from the sidelines and big brother Chris in attendance as well, Howie Long was efficient, completing four of his six passes for a game-high 130 yards. His third and final touchdown - a 66-yard rocket to senior Ryan Caldwell - gave STAB a 28-0 lead with more than 11 minutes left in the second quarter.

“[Long is] doing what we’re asking him to do,” said STAB coach John Blake. “He’s doing very well at finding his receivers, setting his feet, and throwing good balls. If he can continue to do that, we’re going to be OK.”

The Saints (2-0, 0-0 ODFC) outgained North Cross by 230 yards on the ground thanks to a mammoth size advantage on both sides of the line.

Junior Jack Thomasson racked up 104 yards on the ground after stud tailback Colin Pehanick went down with a mild ankle sprain midway through the second quarter. Pehanick joined teammates Hunter Thompson and Brian Linthicum on the sideline. The Clemson-bound Linthicum also fell victim to an ankle sprain, while Thompson injured his shoulder. The severity of the injuries is unknown, but all three hope to play next week.

Despite the bumps and bruises, Blake was encouraged with what he saw on the field - regardless of the quality of the opponent.

“We saw good things on both sides of the ball,” said the 10-year head man. “It’s hard to simulate what they do. I think it was good for us to see them because we’re going to see some of that stuff next week against Trinity.”

Ryan Caldwell reeled in two catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while teammate Steve Brown hit paydirt twice as well, including a 15-yard scamper on fourth-and-inches.

The Saints accumulated 16 first downs compared to just five for the Raiders, who fell to Covenant last week, 34-24.

Few starters saw second-half action for STAB, which allowed North Cross over its side of the 50 just three times all night.

“Last week, we didn’t get a chance to play the second group a whole lot as a unit,” said Blake. “We got a chance to get those younger guys in there tonight and they played well.”

While little brother Howie claimed the glory Friday night, Kyle Long has his sights set on bigger things.

“Nothing short of a state championship will make us happy,” said the 6-foot-7, 280-pound lineman. “Since the day we lost the state championship [last year], we’ve been in the weight room, working together as a team. From Day 1, we’ve come a long way. Our team has come together and we’re ready to show everyone what we can do.”

While coach Blake might not want his boys thinking state championship quite yet, his team’s bravado has led to a 97-7 discrepancy on the scoreboard after just two games - and there are no signs of slowing down.

OSU HAS GOOD SHOT AT LONG

Kyle Long, a 6-foot-7, 280-pound offensive lineman from St. Anne’s Belfield High School in Virginia, is seriously considering Ohio State. Long is just a junior, but he is one of the top-ranked offensive linemen in the Class of 2008.

The son of Hall of Famer Howie Long already is enamored with Buckeye Head Coach Jim Tressel. Long visited Ohio State over the Easter holiday. He took a tour of campus with Tressel in a golf cart.

“He’s like the governor of Ohio,” Long said. “He was incredible. You step on campus there and meet Coach Tressel and Coach (Jim) Bollman. They’re responsible for the success Ohio State has had. You can feel football when you walk on the campus. ... It just turns you on.”

Long watched the OSU-Texas game on TV. He rooted for the Buckeyes. Games like that are a reason Long wouldn’t mind going to OSU.

“They have all those big-named Big Ten teams, and then they play a Texas and a USC. National respect is on the line, and I’m a big respect guy,” Long said. “Ohio State has gained the respect of everybody in the country.”

His top schools, in no order, are OSU, Notre Dame, Virginia (where his brother plays), Kansas State and Louisville.

Football may not be Long’s only avenue. He was an all-state baseball player on St. Anne’s state championship baseball team. He played outfield and pitcher. And yes, there is a chance he could be drafted after his senior season.

“I’m in high school, and I don’t like one more than the other,” he said. “I figure if I’m having success in both sports at the end of my senior year, I will have a tough decision to make. I’m going to take my visits for football, play baseball and see what happens.”

FAMOUS DAD

Long said his father will not make the decision where he goes to college. “He wants me to go to a place where I feel comfortable,” Long said. “And he wants to feel comfortable sending me away.”

That is why Howie Long flew to Columbus last week. He watched practice, toured the campus and met Tressel in person. He said on a radio interview two years ago that Jim Tressel is the kind of guy who “could coach his son.”

FAMOUS GROUNDS CREW
St. Anne’s used to have the world’s most famous grounds crew. Howie Long and acclaimed author John Grisham used to paint the lines on the field. “We just got turf, so they’ve been demoted to the stands,” Kyle Long said.

His leader is Florida St., the only school of which that has offered him to play baseball as well as football. He doesn't even mention ND as one of his options so i will for now assume unless we made a strong push, a baseball offer and a visit from Charlie & Co. at his school on this recruiting trip that it is pretty much over for this kid as of now...

Selected Florida State today.
Must add that current reports say he will play baseball only, not football. Can't say I can fault him for that. Better pay, longer years, and less wear and tear on the body. In addition, he has declined any further interviews.
