I can't speak to what the players want, but it sure seems like the playoffs are going to de-emphasize conference championships. I get the auto byes are an incentive now, but my prediction is that will dissolve within 2 years. So by 2026 they will mean even less.

I would guess "alpha dogs" in the SEC and Big 10 want to win a national championship not a conference championship.

Conference championships are going away. Auto byes are going away. This year is a case study for both of these things just not working. Nobody in the SEC wants to go to the SEC champ. I doubt OSU or Oregon really want to go the the Big 10 champ either. And nobody from the Big 12 or ACC is...

The precedent is set for 1 loss ND yo be tanked ahead of the 2 loss SEC teams. Something would need to happen to change that, like a close win by ND or TAMU to fall completely off.

I agree with others who've stated RL more elaborate running plays are withheld for closer games.
