Gilbert breaking out is huge. I can ignore the running game still not being explosive and the low scoring performance. This is something that had to happen for this team to make a run. Now work out the running game and line.

The line isn't perfect but AW is missing holes left and right. Run game looked completely different in the second half with James in as the primary carrier.

Carr is a stud. Wish Denbrock would take the fucking restrictor plate off. Chalk it up to the weather I guess. I want to see 300+ and 4TD for Carr next week. I want to see CJ play mobey dick for real all over that big stupid drum.

I don't understand forcing the run game early when MSU is keying on it and loading the box. Light their asses up in the passing game, then do your running game drills. Annoying game planning.

None of that matters when you give up 167 yards on defense. Good win, on to Purdue.

Was in the building so didn’t get the same perspective as usual:

- OL doesn’t block well as a unit. It’s often one guy clearly just having an awful rep, usually Craig or Absher right now. Craig I can excuse given the injury but anyone is in fairytale land if they think 5 good reps against Wisconsin meant Absher was fixed. They did a lot of pulling early, again. And they mostly didn’t work, again. Trying to gap run this team to a good run game seems to be hunting the perfectly blocked up run to create the explosive and it’s rarely worked. Still don’t think either starting RB sees things well but James at least is more agile. Seems like we ditched the pistol stuff for some reason.

- I think the constant 11 or 12 personnel but do more harm than good. I don’t think we took a single rep in 10 personnel. And then Flanagan is into the boundary sometimes on them? He’s not a dominant enough run blocker to “need” him out there and he’s a complete zero in the pass game right now. Flanagan into the boundary is taking away 1/3 of the field. Flanagan always on the field is inviting more guys into the box. I would get in 10 and see if it helps the run and pass game.

- D was nearly perfect outside some overcommits on PA

That play feels irrelevant when they followed it up with running it into the pile 3 times and kicking a field goal. They had MSU on their heels - go for the jugular with your incredibly talented and accurate QB. Just let CJ build a rhythm for god's sake, feels like they refuse to let him cook

Although I'm curious how often it's a straight run call vs CJ adjusting to a run at the line. Feels like the clock ran down really far way too often today because of his adjustments

I'm suggesting put points on the board first, then work on the running game. Even after getting burned deep early, MSU was crashing down on the run.

This team can be better than they look running the ball, if they call plays based on what the defense is giving them and not force feeding the ball to prove a point.

I think the only way you’re going to put more than 14 points on the board against this defense is if you hammer away with the run and catch ND sleeping on hard play actions and hope your QB doesn’t get murdered waiting for it to develop

And tbh it's like that for all of their primetime games, including when they've shown B1G games. It's not just how they show our games, it's something fundamentally wrong with how they mic crowds. It was most noticeable last year when they did their first Penn St whiteout game - it was way less electric sounding than when it would be on ESPN.

My only thought is something along the lines of: Denbrock I feel calls the game for how he wants the team to be, instead of calling the game for the team that we are. And he needs to figure out who we are way faster than week 3/4/5.

This is the best phrasing I have seen and I think it is spot on.

I have no idea why we aren't just going 4 wide and chucking it all over the yard as the "standard." We finished the game with 36 RB runs to 24 pass attempts and I just don't know why that's the offense. Probably could create more explosive runs by going throw-throw-throw-RUN into a light box and maybe you make one guy miss.

I want to give him some grace because of the weather but this shit keeps happening. If you switch that to 36 passes and 24 rushes instead we win by 30+.

Completely agree.

We have the best qb on this team in 15+ years and Denbrock wants to go 12 personnel, bunch formations and run into the teeth of the defense.

Run some 10 or 0 personnel. I’m way more confident in our 4th and 5th wr right now than i am our starting RB.
