Yes, he did not fulfill the Foreign language requirement needed to pass admissions. Imagine having a B+ average but still having an academic hurdle to get into school, that's tough.

Sure. And he committed to us relatively late in the recruiting cycle, so less time to check those boxes. But also how hard would it really have been to take a Spanish class?

It was my understanding that ND informed him what needed to be done, and he failed to get that done. You can disagree, but at some point, if you are told that you need to do something to gain admission and you don't do it, you probably shouldn't be allowed to come. Again, though, I may be wrong on the circumstances.

I will add that this is how starved for information we are. We are discussing a guy who is a couple years removed from committing here and would be our 4th safety this year?

That is how I remember it happening as well.

You're not wrong, at least for the general population students. Harbaugh himself said when he was at Stanford that Michigan funnels their players into easy majors and classes, and then he said something along the lines that he would never return to his former school.

Notre Dame staff reportedly tried to rush his enrollment and graduation timeline to address the thin safety position but the turnaround for the required class was too late for him to address at the time.

How so? He was not a reclass or an early enrollee. Did four full years of high school and started college on the normal schedule.

I think the issue was that Hillman's recruitment didn't really take off until the fall of his senior year. I don't know why he wasn't noticed sooner, but his 247 profile shows no offers until that September.


He only visited Notre Dame in October and committed in December. By that point, he wouldn't have had time to take two foreign language classes - if he hadn't already taken one - before graduating high school, unless he took some sort of extra/accelerated or summer program, which apparently he was unwilling or unable to do.

No one's fault, really, just one of those weird circumstances of being Notre Dame.

He took a foreign language but the course wasn't accepted by ND for some reason. My son is having the same issue at his school because he went to some advanced Middle School where they had all the students take a year of Latin and only offered Mandarin outside of Latin. Now that's he's in HS I'm trying to make sure he gets another Foreign Language out the way to avoid that problem but his coach wants him to take weightlifting in place of his FL class and his school only does the classes for half a year.

It's a mess with these courses now
